Just came across this problem with my 3.0 D4D, water in fuel light came on so turned the truck off and drained the fuel filter, pumped it back up and kept driving, the light now stayed on constant. So during the week I replaced the fuel filter, but the light still stayed on. Did a bit of research and found that you have to reset the ignition to clear light.

1. Pull electrical plug off the top of the filter.
2. Start car and re connect the plug
3. After 3 seconds the light will clear

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

yep.. or.. disconnect battery and reconnect..

You'll also probably still have the error code for contaminated fuel in the ECU as well.. so you probably should clear that before your next service to avoid never getting anything fixed every again

Tried disconnecting the battery but this didn't work. And had no fault codes which is why I was confused, and came across those little steps to reset the light using the electrics on the fuel filter itself.

It may help someone else out anyways

Does anyone know what the light means when it comes in a steady state without the flashing / buzzing?

Flashing light means drain water and constant light means change fuel filter if it doesn`t reset.
Mine came on constant in a cold snap but went off and stayed off after resetting, very common problem.

I had the exact issue a couple of days ago...changed the filter today. The bowl was loaded with slime, gunk and just putrid crap btw. New filter istalled and I was left scratching my head, so Ill go reset the light now.

I found that process on here a few months ago...i think it's in the changing filter thread...I had the flashing light last year sometime, drained the filter housing and it cleared...just after this my mates hilux had the solid light which didnt clear after draining...he took it to toyota and they charged him $80 to clear it :O
Then a few months ago i had the solid light (which didn't clear after cleaning/filter change) and i spoke to my mate who told me about toyota charging him $80...I was like 'screw that' NewHilux will have an answer...and sure enough it did

Whenever I get a fuel light (twice so far) water or clogged...it gets a new filter...

I'm pretty sure toyota has made the clogged filter (solid light) un-clearable (unless you know that disconnecting trick) so you have to take it to toyota for a filter change and reset...so they get a bit more money out of you!

p.s. it'a good to have this as a seperate thread...as it took me a bit of searching to find it before...

your a leg toddie had the problem for months no error code did everything else changed the fillter it was still on just did what you said and its gone you beut it was given me the sh#ts

Great timing Toddie. In southern USA (Arkansas) we had 03F temperatures in the past few days. The fuel light came on and I looked it up in the owners manual and of course it said take to Toyota Dealer immediately. Well since Toyota denies the existence of a Hilux in the USA, they won't touch it anyway as a grey market vehicle. There an * to that warning that references a page in near the back of the book on how to drain any water from the fuel filter. I did that multiple time and of course the light didn't go off. Just got back from a two day trip and thought I would check out new posts in the New Hilux forums and the answer was on the first page of new posts. Way to go New Hilux forums. By the way, I never saw any water come out of the bottom of the fuel filter, it mush have been triggered by the cold.

Wow really? That seems like a lot. I think it all depends on how much your vehicle ingested whilst filling up. After bleeding the system have you had any more issues? I would want to make sure that you got it all out.

G'day mate sorry for the late reply, I bled the filter everyday for a week and was getting less and less water in my container, I left on holidays and drove 6500ks.
I let the car run out fuel to try and remove the last of any water in there, I bled the filter on several occasions after that and have seen zero sign of water.

An old rule.
If you see a tanker in filling the station's tanks, don't fill up there.
What happens is, by the tanker filling up the station's tanks, it stirs things right up in their tanks.
There is a chance when you fill up in these conditions, you will put crap into your own fuel tank.
Toddie's got it right, just thought I would post some detail, as per what I know.
Reset fuel system warning light.
Take out the plug with the ignition off.
Turn on the ignition, then connect the warning switch connector that is to be found on the top of the fuel filter assembly, in 3 to 60 seconds.
Make sure the fuel warning light in the internal cluster has turned off.
If it hasn't repeat the exercise.
This is assuming that you have installed a new filter if your fuel system has copped some water in the diesel fuel.

light on solid means fuel filter needs changing flashing is water. filter light is measured by restriction. hence why may have gone off in freezing weather. if Toyota charged 80 without changing the filter be going back pronto. unplug the sensor walk around turn key to reds walk back plug it back in. light cleared. takes 10 seconds.

I think the sensor in my unit maybe cactus. Light stays up after trying the above steps to clear.

Driving across from Perth I must have picked up bad fuel somewhere as once I left Port Augusta yesterday with a full tank my light came on and was solid, pulled over and drained few times and today replaced fuel filter in Adelaide, good ole super cheap for having one..
The filter didn't look that bad.
Gotta try again with the plug as wouldn't work before.

In these thread the 4th page tell you about the resetting of the light.

I had the fiesel filter light come on solid for about a week, firstly i took the plug off and then undid the fuel filter and pulled the filter out (which was black, well used ) then replaced it with a ryco filter, and new rubber seals, screw the filter back on and purge the system till firm on the button. reconnect the plug, start her up and the fuel filter light should be off!!
