Fuel Filter Changeover Pics after 100,000kms

G'day all,

Requested for a change of fuel filter element at the 100,000kms service. Thought some guys would like to see some pics:

Bottom of the bulb had a mass of cloggy sh*t, almost 5mm thick and a small amount of water at bottom of the bulb.



Filter element was doing what it's supposed to, had a heap of gunk that doesn't really show up in the pics.



Apparently all new Hilux's have a change of fuel filter element every 20,000kms whereas my model doesn't include this provision in the book. Anyways it's all changed now for $20 bucks and I'll get it cleaned out at every service for peace of mind.

I changed it when I got the car at 210,000km.

Thats why i and a lot of other members change the fuel filter every 5K or few push it out to 10K...

changed the filter but the bloody dash light is still on, anyone know the code?

Yea mine looked similar to the ones pictured above.. The diesel injection mob that replaced my injectors said it was the cause of my problem (Cold Rattles & Rough idle).. They recommended changing it every time the car was serviced. $30 for a new filter or $3000+ for new injectors i know which i'll be doing..

@Fluff- Remove and replace the positive terminal on the battery mate.. i beleive it mentions it in the user manual.

I left mine till the 40k mark and had the same thick yellow junk caked in the base of the casing and the filter was well and truly done. Have been doing it every 5k since and still finding crap in the filter with the occasional metal filings from the servo fuel. Even had mine idling better a minute or 2 after the change in filter. Not keen on the injector replacement coming up.

Try using a Scanguage by wiping out the code should do the trick.

Yep, I can vouch for the piss poor Toyota service instructions for the fuel filter. I pulled my OEM filter out yesterday in preparation for fitting a water watch filter and it was black as a coal mine at midnight and the bottom of the filter canister had a slimy black sludge. Only 75k on the clock.

I checked with the local Canberra Toyota dealer and they have NO fuel filters on the shelf and apparently none in Australia. They are on back order and have been for some time already. I asked what happens to the poor sod who comes in with a dead filter and the reply was simple - they are out of action until the filters arrive in country. By the way, the genuine Toyota filters are over $120 each.

I went to a reputable auto supplier and purchased a good quality aftermarket filter for just over $20. And I'll be replacing it every 10K myself from now on.

Interestingly after replacing the filter with a new one the engine seems more responsive now. I can't even guess how much extra load the old filter was putting on the fuel pump trying to suck fuel through what I reckon was a nearly blocked filter.

Who gave you the price of $129 for a filter? I got a genuine Toyota one (2012 d4d) in Darwin for just over $30.00 and I always thought we got ripped up here.

I bought one in the Mt Isa dealer last year for $30~. My wife recently bought me another one from Hong Kong toyota which also cost similar.

I feel the toyota dealers do not have a centralised network. I suggest you call the Sydney dealer (can't remember which suburb, try google) and get it mailed to your door.

The chap at the parts desk gave me the price. I was almost floored by the price Maybe he was quoting for the entire filter assembly, not just the filter element I'll check when they give me a call to let me know when the filters are in stock. In any case I wouldn't be surprised if the price was just for the filter element, we get ripped off here on car parts all the time.

I just ordered a ryco one for mine and looking through the rest of the servicing schedule, I can't see the replacement of a fuel filter called for between the next service (120,000km) and the end of the book (200,000km)

To clear the light: unplug the top plug on the filter, start car, plug back in.

I had my filter light come on at 33000 kms yesterday, I stopped and drained fuel from the filter which was spotless, cleared the light and continued on, today I changed the filter, a bit of dirt and slight sludge in bottom of housing but nothing like above photo.

The light came on going up a big hill after about 3hrs of highway driving.

Strange isn't it, only the new trucks have it in the service book, I think from 2011 onwards and it's changed every 20K service.
