The rest of my service book says nothing about changing the fuel filter in the next 80,000kms so I decided to change mine. 115,000kms:

Can't believe it's written on the filter bowl that the filter never needs replacing!

Beside my Hilux my missus drives a 2011 diesel prado and Toyata are happy to change the fuel filter between the 2 fuel tanks at $96 a pop every 20000km. But won't replace the main filter at $35 each.

I change my stock Toyota Filter after every 20,000km, but I also have a final filter @ 2 micron which I would prefer change earlier.

Hey guys I change mine every 10k and I'm noticing a lot more wear and tear on the filter housing teeth. Seeming as though both marks on the side of the filter need to match up, the same teeth are getting worn away and it is getting very difficult to correctly undo/tighten her up. Are other guys experiencing this problem?

I'm in the same boat, I'm due to change the filter now and have busted the teeth in prior services. I'm thinking of trying a oil filter strap around it.

The job is easier if you remove the whole filter assembly from under the bonnet, then work on it clamped in a vice. You may find you can then get at a different part of the nut.

I run an FM100 kit using 2 micron filter as my secondary, and the factory as primary.

I change one filter very 10k, so no filter is older than 20k

I've been running this setup for over a year now (around 23k)

Toyota say Hilux diesel fuel filter change is 40k mile intervals because of the fuel systems very fine tolerances changing more frequently could increase the possibility of damage by accidentally introducing foreign bodies during the disturbance.

yeah, I don't understand 5k or 10k changes. imo 20k is good. I also like to flush a new filter with fuel before connecting

As long as the fuel filter drain tap is opened at every service interval to let out any water or shite the filter is well capable of doing its job right up to 60k km unless using contaminated fuel.
The fuel filter warning light will tell you when the filter is full and needs changing, it isn`t just to warn of water

yeah, I'd not be keen on 60k in Australia. also the service manual states 40k

that said, as I'm running dual filters, I might stretch my changes a bit more

does the element type on the fuel filter matter?

I swapped my filter over only after about 15k as i noticed the pre-filter had some water and shit in it. the primary was quite dirty actually must have got a bad lot of fuel. lucky i checked. anyway.

I noticed the genuine filter in my hilux was this type , this was put in at the last service interval.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FIT-TOYOTA-H ... SwBnVW-LX1

whilst the spare one i had was this type

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Toyo ... SwgkRVTDo~

My hilux is a 2013 build model so i am fairly certain fuel filter 2 is the one for my vehicle, but really is their any difference between them except that bit at the bottom?, are the interchangeable, is one better than the other?

I changed mine today. The first link you posted is the latest type.
The second link is the old type. I actually have an old spare I carry with me which is an in-between type which has the extra bit on the bottom but looks different.

Just read the last bit of your post again qldminer. I'm pretty sure they are all interchangeable, but you will get the later type from Toyota when you ask for a filter for any Hilux 2005 onwards as it has replaced all previous filters. Stand to be corrected, but that's my understanding.
