I see you want chassis mounting specific info however lets keep the simular questions about fuel filters on one thread.

No problem, mate. Thanks for that.

I hadn't seen that thread. Thanks for the link.

Most pre-filter set ups are 30 micron - the OEM is said to be around 5-10micron so not much sense running anything under 20

Wouldn't it just mean that most of the stuff that the OEM would have caught would be picked up by the pre filter first? Then the OEM filter becomes more of a "2nd line of defence"?

1 - yes, pre filter is best if water is a concern. A pre-filter that has a water warning buzzer is a logical solution here. Even if you visually inspect the water trap every day it takes just seconds for water to get sucked into the bowl while driving. A water sensor with warning light/alarm will give you instant alert and possibly time to shut down before it gets into the OEM filter.
2 - Location is the main concern under the vehicle if you go off road. Those Donaldson pre filters look tall but you might find a spot where the bowl wint get smashed. Have heard of some guys thinking of Prado pre fuel filters but havnt seen where they install them and I doubt they have a water alarm. Some guys mount the 2nd filter on the driver side of the engine bay.

Yeah, the drivers side is the other option. I'll get under and have a better look, but I reckon I could make a bracket to fit it above the fuel tank under the tray. Anyway, I'll keep thinking. Thanks heaps for the reply. Very helpful.

Someone else may have seen a under chassis filter

Is anyone running the Ryco universal prefilter? http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Produc ... 2UA/127751

Pros:
- It's cheap, at around $80.
- replacement filters are cheap at $10-$13 and should be widely available.
- It has an acrylic inspection bowl which might be harder to break than glass? Also cheap to replace.
- the filter is 18 micron.
- it's more compact than others, eg Donaldon.

Cons:
- No alarm system, but I'm happy with something simple and to rely on daily inspections and the OEM alarm.

I know cheap isn't necessarily good, but this seems like pretty decent value, to me, for extra protection without a big price tag, assuming you don't want/need an alarm.

Thoughts?

Rico website gives its flow rate of 40-45Lph. I think you’d be starving your engine. Pretty sure the common filters in use are 100 or maybe 200Lph.

I'll check that out. But let's say my range when travelling 100km/h is 600km. It's more than that, but for this purpose we'll be conservative. So i would burn 80 litres of fuel in 6 hours. That's 13.3 litres per hour. Even if we doubled that for back flow were still well below 40lph.

Maybe so for an average but peak flow when you put your foot down is much higher, you need around 120lph! And remember there is always return flow to the tank which is requred to cool the system and the lift pump allowing more flow than required at any given moment.

Try this... Check your computer displayed for fuel flow instant...not average.. Then floor it up a hill... You would be surprised how much lp100k you increase to. :o

Worst active kilometers per liter I achieved from a Hilux was my 07’
0.8 km per liter but it was sitting on a dyno in 3rd at max torque.
Entire manifold, turbo and about a foot of the dump pipe was cherry red.

So if you want a high quality filter from a reputable brand look at Donaldson or fleet guard filter systems.
This would be overkill but look at truck, plant or tractor engines. A lot of older and many current models run very simple filter systems on the sides of chassis and bolted onto sides of the block.
Very easy to make work. And something I’ll likely be doing too...... eventually

Wow! With a .8l fuel flow I bet your egt temps were off the planet! All the cherry red exhaust system would be way over 8-900c meaning damage is being done especially in the combustion chamber! :o Iron melts around 1000 c and aluminum as in pistons etc melts at 660.3c  :o  and aluminum alloy melts between 463-670c

Hence why we only maintain that for a very short period of time.
Funny that you say that though I still to this day say that was the best Hilux I have driven for pure stock power.
And a lot of friends have said the same (many driving similar lux’s). I don’t know what we did when it was on that dyno as we didn’t change a thing but it just wanted to go from there out. Still wish I never sold it.
