On the injector front, diagnostics needs to be carried out every service.
That's what I do for my clients. Then, no one is in the dark. You know exactly where they are on the wear stakes.

Always being informed & asked for help with these problems.
I received a message recently which is a perfect example of what can happen, it seems that it happens way to much, slightly edited to hide their identity.
Sure you have read this sort of problem before, but it still happening.

Hi, Anth you seem to know what you're talking about in relation to this whole injector recall relating to 1kd's My 1kd had its injectors done under the recall about 3 months ago, and it had done approximately 130,000 km. After researching the facts, I ensured that the dealership checked the oil pickup at the bottom of the sump, as well as other things. The problem was that when I got my car back from the recall, it had lost all of its zip and power.

It now has nothing off the line and struggles to get up basic hills like the Moony Moony Bridge and some of the hills on way to Canberra. Heaven help me when I try to tow my camper trailer. It used to sale up these hills before the injector recall, however can barely crawl up them now in 4th and even 3rd gear.

I have had the car back at the dealership three times, the latest one I picked up the car last Friday to head to Canberra. The car had even less power than he did before I put it into the dealership and they had the car for two weeks trying to sort out the problem.

The car is now so sluggish off the line, along with its poor performance on the road that I do not believe it is safe to drive, especially by my wife.

I am wondering if you can give me some pointers as to what the problem might be, as the Toyota dealership does not seem to have any idea. I do say that they recognise there is a significant problem and are doing there best to sort it out, but they are not diesel experts. I fear the next step might be Toyota Australia as I believe the dealership needs clearance from them before they can do much more.

If you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Xxxx

Hmmm.......
Do you think they actually installed injector seats in the ports?
I wonder, did they use a torque wrench when doing up the injector clamps?

I hate when it's number four cylinder with blow by.
I recently had one with blow by in number three and number four.
The bloody copper injector seat was stuck in number four cylinder port, as well.
Bastard of a job.
It was on a early 2008 Prado KDJ120.

How about this set, 2010 lux, 114k, revised coated sheets/washers.
3 with long term blow by.

The plot thickens, see the bottom of the sheets, dirty black marks, 3rd one across can be seen, so these have been removed by a poor operator & ports not cleaned. The sheets may have even been re-used

Then I find out his turbo bearings chewed out at about 60-70k, new turbo :!:

Then I'm told it had a big end problem about 80-90k, bottom end repair :!:

All caused by a bodgy 40k VALVE clearance check? Blow by, blocked oil pickup, lack of lube to usual failed parts, turbo & big end. Maybe.......... :?:

Another set, another dodgy operator.

See the black on the bottom of the sheets? This is from installation without cleaning ports.
Lucky they were removed again to be replaced, or it may have ended up as the above.

Even copper sheets come out clean when installed correctly.

Another pic, the top set installed on a clean surface = reliability if torqued to 22nm.
Bottom set just another put in on filth.

Yes, injector ports must be clean before you install the injector seats.
To many pigs in the industry that don't really know what they are doing. ;)
I do wish everyone could be to a satisfactory standard in the mechanical/repair industry.
You know, for the consumer's sake.

I've got a feeling that the bottom set shown above may be pretty common after some dealerships do the recall work

I think (but don't know, cos I've never done it) that properly cleaning the bores and the sealing surfaces would take time.

That time combined with perhaps not good wages, is just begging to be short cut.
