contaminated fuel

Postby DODGE on Sun, 22 Apr 2012 9:33 +0000

Hi guys great site and first post for me.

I have a 2011 hilux , I filled up with diesel of friday after being nearly bone dry.

20k later the fuel light was flashing and beeping, pulled over straight away and refereed to manual. it stated water in fuel filter. So unsecured the tap at the bottom of the filter and drained a lot of clear liquid before the disel came out.

all good until 40 k later and same thing happened again.

what is the best thing to do.
do i completely drain the tank and re fill up or should i take it to a dealer and get the whole system flushed.

do i need a new filter ( only done 24000k )

i heading up to the alpine on friday for a 3 day trip so need to act fast.

what is the best way to drain the tank??

appreciate any help.

Thanks

Paul

Did you keep the receipt where you get the fuel from?

Id be removing, draining and cleaning the fuel tank, to be honest I have not done this on a hilux but it wouldn't be that much work once you got stuck into it.
yes I would do fuel filter as well.

Probably no damage done and nothing to claim from the servo anyway.
Just get on it and fix the problem and forget about it I say.

I think they have done this for a reason, my mechanic friend told me that model diesel cars do not have drain plugs in fuel tanks. fuel thief?

Plastic tank too. How easy for any ape to over tighten .
Seen it many times , make sure you never fill your vehicle if you see a tanker filling the in ground tanks.
Got 1 customer put 70ltrs in at a local servo . It didn't make 400meters . Towed in vehicle and drained tank, got 60 liters of brown water. Hit up the independent servo a d got nowhere even though he could prove it.

The lack of a drain bung of some sort is a joke.
All earthmoving equipment, even the smallest little machines with 3 cylinder engines have a drain TAP under the tank so that water and sludge can be drained off at regular intervals, it's part of the regular checks the operator is supposed to do.
They suffer more from water in fuel due to metal tanks which cause condensation at night, and refuelling from on site tanks, but for the cost of a plug Toyota should think about it.
I know a tap under a Hilux tank would probably create ground clearance issues but surely a small hexagonal plug like an engine sump plug would be O.K.
Water in diesel fuel is a fact of life especially in Australia.

whats easiest way to drain diesel tank? Got stuck in creek yesterday for about 3hrs and water was over the filler cap, already drained out probably 300ml from the bottom of the filter/water seperator.
