Long Ranger 140LT tank

Hi Guys,

i really want to upgrade to the 140lt tank but i want to from someone who has one...

whats happens with the fuel guage reading????

i want this tank for the long trips but theres no point if i dont know the range of whats in my tank at all time....

any feedback would be great...

Mate ive got one. Apart from the fact that it costs an arm and a leg to fill it up there is no diference. The fuel gauge will remain the same too, although ive never ran it dry so am not sure how much fuel I would have left once it hits empty on the guage. Also it sits lower than the Chassis so would have the potential to reduce your ramp over angle. Ive never hit it yet though. Dont know how dificault it is to fit one as I got ARB to do it for me. same mate, arb fitted mine but have a couple of good dints in the bottom as mentioned it sits a bit low, still going strong tho.
fuel gauge works same but needle sits a bit long on full and empty for me, i could get around 240k's from when empty light comes on.

Does this replace the main 70l tank?

I have a V6 so tend to use about 25% more fuel an a D4D (not worried about the fiscal side of things, but from an emotional perspective the lower range is annoying)

I have one fitted and yes the needle is a bit annoying. Firstly it stays on full for about 300ks and then when the empty light comes on I have around 20 -25 litres left I have calculated. Also a bit annoying the empty light doesn't always come on when continuosly running the vehicle, that is to say I have stopped the car after driving for hours, then started again and light comes on. So I ignore the light mostly and know that when needle is right on empty it takes about 118 litres to fill. Would be great to know with all this technology exactly how much is left, afterall that's the reason we have these lr tanks.

Would also like know other peoples experiences.

Kermie, I have one and I fitted it myself. Took about 4 hours, but I did do it without a hoist. A few things with the install. You have to bend the fuel sender to fit the new tank which results in the tank reading full for quite a while, this is because of the deeper tank. The instructions are clear and precise. Make sure you turn the pivot bolt on the front of the left spring around so you dont have to remove the tank to change the spring.
These tanks are good quality and I have never hit mine while offroad *touch wood*

P.S if you have one of the hiluxes which have the tail shaft loop recall, you may have to install a spacer on the front tank mount to clear the bracket for the loop.

I have been looking at one of these tanks and on the Long Ranger website it states that the Distance To Empty function in the dash of the Hilux will cease to work. If this is true, it makes me not want to get one. Is it true or false?

true it states when full have 700 odd k's till empty and shifts about the place when gone past the 700 stated if that makes sence
but saying that its never worried me, never looked at function in the dash anyway always on somethin else.

A number of members use a scan gauge to calc distance to empty. There is a thread on the scan gauge to tell you more about it

ok so we have a couple of variations, i can live with all of them!!!!

so whats the most km's anyone has got out of this tank before getting to paranoid????????

I get over 1400km's around town out of my 140L Long Ranger. I end up putting in around 125L every 2-3 weeks. I usually fill up when the light comes on, just so i dont suck up all the crap at the bottom of the tank. And filling up every few weeks is now a novelty.

I love mine. The gauge accuracy depends on the installer. When you install it you have to bend the arm which the float for the gauge is on. You bend it straighter so it has a longer sweep. They don't hang down any lower than your standard tank either. It just looks it because its silver and not black. I generally get about 1200km out of mine but I run around fully loaded 24/7 and the rooftop tent and muddies don't help fuel economy. I put about 137L in it if I let it go to 1200km.

It is a novelty to only have to fill up every few weeks. Hits the bank account pretty hard when you fill it though. Normally about $200 a pop.

My Holden ute had that feature

No bullcrsp guesstimates based on averages and assumptions or varying needle positions.

Just straight out litres remaining. Rest is up to driver to know his range and what lie ahead for him/her

The fuel pick up is always from the bottom mate regardless of how much fuel is in the tank so i wouldnt worry about that

Get a scan gauge like alby has said. Ive got both the 140L long ranger tank and a scan gauge and once you fill up a few times to 'teach' it how much fuel you use its pretty damn accurate.

You will loose clearance on your ramp over angle, just bear that in mind, I didn't know this when I got mine and I think I would have got a different brand if I knew. The long ranger hangs down past side steps/ rocksliders

I get about 800-900kms out of 120liters as empty light comes on at about 20 liters left, this is with a Sunday of off roading. Been so long since I have been able to run the full tank with no 4WDing (not that I'm complaining at all ).

when its filled does the car lean or sag????

i mean it must be alot of weight to have on one side of the car????

I actually have noticed that my tires run a little hotter on the left hand side but im talking 1 degree which makes a 1psi difference in them but this is not noticeable. Having the extra distance makes touring alot easier and means you dont stop at the pump as often around town. Alot more pros than cons mate... Get one.

I like to carry 200litres on the Road. 140 in the tank filled so its running out the spout and 3 Jerrys. Lets you flip the bird at Turkey Creek Roadhouse in the Kimberly and especially at Barclay Homestead on the way to Mt Isa. The fuel gauge starts to move after 300 odd klicks.Occaisionally do 1000k on the tank,more if I ran it with the light on.
