Have a special kero blaster and then a special air blaster. Then Wash out the residue with clean oil and inspect.
I Have recheck all that I have cleaned after 1000km travel with the eye and tye camra and never had to clean again.

If you can not make the tools best to remove the sump. But that can get expensive.

It took the mechanics 8 hrs to remove the engine to do my sump, thankfully that isn't what I was charged. Not a cheap job anyway.

If anyone needs help with injector values, what to look for checking oil pick up screen maybe I can help.
I'm on the same page as Talktheroo (my brother from another mother).

Turns out my sump had a nasty hairline fracture = 2 5l bottles of oil in 4 days, fixed now and also oil pickup was spit polished

He must have been quick on your job, he was with us all last weekend doing the same thing! Did a great job on our 05 lux that was showing signs of blowback on a couple of the pots. Soon to add catch can and fuelmanager filter.

I came across this forum while researching hilux,s as am considering buying one but now having second thoughts.Has Toyota fixed this problem on later ones and if so what year should I be looking at .

Boxhead, have you previously posted details of your sump screen cleaning rig and methodology? Any links?? If not would be great if you could give us a run down on the tools and process

X2 - looking at giving the sump a flush. I found a crude but probably effective homemade sand blaster on the net:

I would imagine the negative pressure created from any compressor would be enough to draw kero up the tube into the sump plug hole. Just need the right size tube... and possibly a hazmat suit

It's really pathetic Toyota doesn't inform it's owners of this issue. Even if they not want to pay for it, they should recommend to get them changed out.
So many years gone by & still thousands of unsuspecting owners, lucky saved this one in time, but others are not so lucky. This was a 09/07 build lux still with original copper seats never opened up.
No.1 was leaking a while by the looks & no.4 was leaking also.
The oil pick up was quite clogged.

Have you seen any failures of post 2008 models with the newer injector seals fourby?

Blow by is not as common as it was with the old copper seats.
It's still a good idea to keep those seats fresh and check your sump screen, as blow by writes off blocks.
It's not worth the risk of a written off block and the expense associated with this problem.

I wonder why toyota NZ recommends changing out the injector seats at regular service intervals while nothing is done about it here in oz?

Cleaned my sump last month. I didnt have a blocked pickup so cant say how effective this might be for cleaning that.
Cost - $5 for 1L Kerosene + using up crap lying around shed
This works well with fumuto valve.

Cleaned up an empty slime bottle after filling quad bike tire utilising the bottle screw top nozzle.


Insert grommet with oil resistant RTV. Allow to set


Plug grommet Fill with 3/4 with Kero. Clamp fuel hose to nozzle


Connect free end of fuel hose to fumuto valve


Rests well bewteen auto trans and cross member


Dial compressor hose to 30-40PSI. Kero blasts into sump in a few seconds. Flick fumuto closed
Repeat with rest of clean kero.


Place empty kero bottle under hose


Open valve and drain

After suffering that short spell of blow-by and white smoke we spoke of months back I thought it prudent to flush any carbon particulate that may have built up and been sitting in the sump. Replicated as well as I could figure out from a cryptic description BH alluded to when blast-cleaning blocked pickup screens
Specialised screen cleaning sounds like a trade secret
Is a clean method using a fumuto valve - as long as you dont over pressurize the bottle theres not much mess.

looks like a lot of work ,just buy one of these into sump hole... juice up the pressure

Is there any way to know if injectors or seats have been changed? I have an 08/08 build with nearly 230k on it, I checked feedback values with techstream, and when warm, all injectors read within +\- 1 of each other.

Yep - another option. Probably take a fair bit of time to clean up the garage floor and yourself after sticking that up the drain hole with pressure
James 84 +/- 1 sounds okay. Any previous maintenance history? At 230K it looks like the injectors might have been replaced. Listen for change in rattle, park nose down hill every now and then - look for white smoke, and Keep an eye on those readings every 5K as suggested. Throw your teachstream data up on the techstream thread - BH, Roo or Luxi will most likely be able to give you a more experienced reply
