I've still got lots of room.
The only thing i have to do when i replace the fuel filter is unbolt it from the bracket a 2 minute job.

Do you need to bleed air out of the fuel system when installing the second filter system?

Not usually, just keep pumping the primer till it goes hard and it should start fine, if it starts and stalls just prime it up again.

Ok so just disconnect fuel line install second filter and pump primer and all is good

Yep just make sure ya get the flow direction rite and it'll be fine.

just to test and prime the whole system, take off the outlet hose from the oem filter to the supply pump and pump the primer til only fuel comes out, refit the hose... bingo both filters primed and ready for action

So correct it's not funny,
I use to think ill just check mine and drain when filling up, but as stated you can go through 6-7 filter to clean out dirty fuel in one tank,
Depending on your driving you can go through upto 20lts of fuel per hour
That's enough to fill that little bowl very quickly,

You can get washable filters in 1um and up

In a side not the micron ratting of a filter mean next to nothing without the beta ratio

Have you guys put your secondary filter before or after the primary filter? Before being between tank and primary, after being between primary and motor.

I know this is an old thread, but I just stumbled accross this coment and I'm trying to educate myself. What about the following scenario:
1. First filter = Factory filter with water sensor followed by,
2. Secondary filter = Diesel Care (for example) W/O water sensor......

By the time water is detected in the first filter and the alarm goes off/light lights up, the secondary fuel filter would be the redundancy for the first, therefore negating the need for (another) sensor on the secondary filter.

What I don't understand is the price difference of the following, when they all look the same (could it be Chinese knock-offs... maybe I'm a cynic??)

Daytripper, I get your idea but really a pre filter before the oem will do the job... if the pre-filter gets water in the bowl the oem will eventually give you an alarm At least you will see the water (if you do a daily check) before it gets to the oem but this is belts and braces approach.

Evening all. I've done plenty of searching but if someone can point me to a relevant thread I'd appreciate it.

I'm thinking about mounting a Donaldson P902976 pre filter under the tray near the fuel tank. It's an 11 micron filter with a water trap with a flow rate of 114lph. It also has full size (3/8") barbs so there shoudn't be any issues with flow restriction. Is this a suitable filter? From the reading I've done plenty of people use pre filters similar to this without issue. I have a few other questions.

1. My main concern is water so a pre filter seems to be the better way to go than a secondary filter. Am I right? The plan is to do daily inspections when I'm out on a trip and being viewable without lifting the bonnet, it shouldn't be a problem.

2. Are there any concerns with having a filter back near the tank? I've got the ARB dual battery tray under the bonnet with a Redarc solenoid. The oil filter is already tricky enough to get out, so I don't want more crap in there.

I've been doing plenty of reading and research about additional diesel filtration lately. I've searched comprehensively but if anyone can point me to a thread with this specific info, I'd appreciate it. I'm planning a trip to the cape soon and there are quite a few stories out there about dodgy fuel on the cape. At this stage I'm looking at installing a Donaldson 11 micron filter under the tray or on the chassis near the fuel tank. I'm just wondering if anyone has done anything similar and if so:

a) Where, exactly, did you mount it?

b) Can you give me any tips, advice or issues to consider with this setup?

c) Do you have an pics of the install?

Most pre-filter set ups are 30 micron - the OEM is said to be around 5-10micron so not much sense running anything under 20
1 - yes, pre filter is best if water is a concern. A pre-filter that has a water warning buzzer is a logical solution here. Even if you visually inspect the water trap every day it takes just seconds for water to get sucked into the bowl while driving. A water sensor with warning light/alarm will give you instant alert and possibly time to shut down before it gets into the OEM filter.
2 - Location is the main concern under the vehicle if you go off road. Those Donaldson pre filters look tall but you might find a spot where the bowl wint get smashed. Have heard of some guys thinking of Prado pre fuel filters but havnt seen where they install them and I doubt they have a water alarm. Some guys mount the 2nd filter on the driver side of the engine bay.

Someone else may have seen a under chassis filter
