It's hard to say, as you can only really tell by checking the oil sump pickup screen when you've dropped your oil.

I'm concerned, but I won't be checking it for at least another 2-3k when it's due for a service

Pretty sure every common rail diesel ive come across does that when you first initially boot it, doesnt mean anything is wrong with it at all - is it a diesel engine after all not a petrol !

Had injectors replaced this week by Mick at Canberra Diesel Centre - very impressed with the service. Injectors were stuffed, copper washers were good as new. I mentioned the blocked oil pickup to them, they haven't seen a blocked one yet nor heard it's an issue. He checked mine and said it was ok.

Well !! I have installed 4 new DLC injectors ,all coded in properly ,toyota said reflash has already been done before I bought the car.
Engine still has very bad fuel knock when cold , injectors rattle like noisy tappets when engine hot.
No problem with power and idles smooth

I dont know where to go from here , what do you guys reckon ,just keep driving it , It's only got 60,000 k's on it.

I can live with the cold start fuel knock.
is it normal for these to have that rattle when engine is hot ???? :?:

Alby - Did you change the filter every 5,000 Kms or just the Oil - and the filter every 10,000 Kms ?
What sort of oil do you use?

Both get changed every time with Castrol oil (my mechanic does it so don't know which one off hand but can check for you)

I picked up my 09 ,50k lux on friday and talked to the service manager of the dealership that has been doing the servicing. He said a lot of people had been asking him about the problem but he had " only" seen two or three cases in the last few years. He was very defensive about the issue but couldn't say why there was no recall as in the UK and the 40k replacement in NZ.

With the amount of concern out there and the media attention I think any vehicle with the D4D motor is going to be devalued on the secondhand market so the issue would be effecting a lot of people. I'll be contacting Toyota to let them know what I feel about their inaction on the subject.

There seems to be more talk than problem from what I can see
Why would there be a recall if there is such a small percentage of problems. Apart from Grogfrog who else has seen an issue like this? It is a good idea to periodically do an inspection but lets keep it in perspective. If there is going to be any recalls I would be way down the list after brakes, clutches, trany coolers, water pumps, injectors, blah blah blah

Mine's an '05 with almost 170k on it. The oil pick up was clean at the service last week. I'll continue to check/have it checked at service time, but I won't be as paranoid as I was when I first read the alarmist threads on here.

I hope you blokes are right and the people who have experienced these problems are only dreaming. And the UK and NZ Toyota businesses who have decided to spend a lot of money protecting the Toyota name are needlessly wasting their efforts.

I am not saying they are dreaming, I don't doubt that some have had this problem and hope they get sorted with as little grief as possible. What I am saying is going by the feedback from this forum and the diesel mechanics that I have spoken to that it appears to be a minor issue here in Australia. You only have to read the posts here and you soon see that nobody holds back in airing their grievances and it has not been an issue.
Whatever the issue is overseas it does not appear to be repeating itself here

Hi All,
I did a service on the weekend and as a result of being allerted to the potential problem bought a scope and had a look up the drain plug.
Found that about 25% of the screen is blocked. The car MY is 2010 and have done 90.000 Kms
Obviously I need to do something about it. I do all the servicing and other mainenance on it myself (inspite of the warranty) and would prefer to do the seals / strainer myself. Do I involve Toyota and how cooperative do you think they would be?
Paul

Well spotted Paul, wouldn't have been a nice feeling seeing the screen. Hope I don't have a similiar experience when I look at mine soon.

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't involve Toyota especially seeing you can get the work done under warranty. Big job pulling the motor out and cleaning it then replacing the injector seals. The more Toyota learn about these problems the more they may be inclined to issue a recall to do a scope check on all D4D's over 40k's or something.
