Doing a bit of research on deisel gas systems, just wondering who has them, what brand and what you think of them!

DieselGas from Sydney installed my LPg almsost three years ago. Best mod on my truck, easily.

Haven't had a problem with it other than a bad load of gas which fouled the pick up in the tank. Easy and cheap fix.

Very worthwhile if you do a lot of kms, or like power!

I believe they have a newer, updated system which is even better than what I have. It uses even less gas for the same, if not better power.

Cheers

Steve,

I had the LPG done well before I got the dodgy diesel... funnily enough I got the bad load of LPG about two weeks after the bad diesel!! Not happy Jan! If oly the damage causd by the bad diesel was as cheap and easy to fix as the bad LPG!!

One tip with any LPG for a vehicle. Only use reputable LPG like UNIGAS. Others have way to much butane and will foul your injection system. I paid the price by filling up with some no-name servo LPG. Never again!! Go where the taxi's go, or look out for UNIGAS, it has a guaranteed level of propane... which as the guy from that cartoon King of the Hill says is 'fuel of the gods'!!

Speak to Brad, Matt or Charlie at DieselGas. They are very knowlegdable and friendly guys.

Cheers

David,

If you can get the rebate then it's a really good option for your truck.
Fuel will continue to get more expensive, this is a really good addition to improving fuel economy. Especially if you get a LR fuel tank... you could get upto 1600km range with 145L LR tank and 45L (ish) LPG tank. Then you can fill up where/when it is cheap and not need to fill upo for a long time!

Don't get me wrong, the new Hilux deisels have loads of power and are nice to drive, but when I drive a standard truck now it's just awful... where is the power!!

For $2000 after the rebate you won't bolt anything better onto your truck.

Cheers
Matt

ps after the LPG you will want a chip, exhaust, intercooler upgrade, turbo upgrade etc. I do!! More POWER!!!

Steve,

I have a 45L tank. Well matched to the 115L diesel tank I have. More LPG than you need for that amount of diesel.

(I'm still looking into getting a tap out fitted from the tank for a BBQ etc... its on that long list of stuff to do!)

There are a lot of different size tanks. Some are round and can go where the spare usually sits, some that can squeeze between the chassis rails etc. Yoiu might evn run multiple smaller tanks depending on your set up.

Cheers
Matt

10K.
What happens when you run out of gas, does it revert back to being just a standard diesel again? Or do you need gas in the tank to keep running.

Skog,

When you have no gas the truck runs as normal.

There is a switch to turn the LPG on and off, no gas is definate 'off'!

Sorry for the stupid question, I saw a landrover with it fitted in a mag a "Dgas ad I think" that did a desert run and wondered what happened if it ran out of LPG if it would run as normal on the diesel. They are actually starting to fit the NSW govt buses with this technology as well. Mine being a business vehicle is not eligible for the government grant so it is an expensive option but one that would probably pay for it soon enough though considering the ks that I am starting to do.
Thanks
Mark

Depending on how big the tank is and whose system you install about $4000ish.

If privately owbed you'll snare the $2000 LPG rebate from Uncle Kevin.

There is talk that the excise will be increased on LPG though, so the price could double.

Still will be cheaper to run though, more power and longer range with LPG, just not as good in terms of $ per kms as now with LPG at 60-70c.

i sat down and worked out the numbers with the rebate factored in, and by saving 20% via the gas efficiency / economy, it'd still take 5 years+ (depending on number of kms p/a) to break even on the cost of the conversion.. and i doubt VERY much whether i'll still have it in 5 years.. so although the extra power would be nice to have, i cant justify it Im afraid..

Your spot on Steve...

If it's economy your after then its not really worth it unless your not keeping the car long term.

But consider this... With LPG and a LR Tank...

When I go away I have fantastic range so I fill up where it is cheap (good fuel quality as well).
For example I fill up in Sydney at $1.88 per L, drive to Thredbo, up and down the hill a few times to Jindyabyne and drive home all on one tank. I don't have to fill in Cooma, or Jindy where fuel is usually at least 20c more per litre compared to Sydney.

Also I fill up at home when fuel is cheap and have the range to not need to fill for a while.

And the power is awesome... especially when towing.
If you tow LPG is worth thinking about, you really see great improvements in fuel economy.

To be honest I was after more power when I installed the LPG, now I'm enjoying the economy and savings in these high fuel price days.

Cheers
