Forget about being legal if ya want to go big lol! Give the boys at ultimate suspension a call and get some pre-assembled struts etc so ya not playing with spring compressors! The rest is easy.

Why 3"? You need ask yourself
Being from vic 2" tyre and 2" lift requires no engineeres, but travel interstate and you may find your car defected for what is legal in your state of reg
Current new laws in vic is max 33" tyre and max 2" over stock without engineering as an icv
So you your pre 08 31" is biggest tyre you can ride with engineeres post 08 33"

You need to look into all other options before you just deceid I want 3" lift
Do you have a bull bar and side bars? Do you plane on them? Dual battery? Winch? rear draws or fridge? plane on them?
Theis will all affect what Spring you chose

3"
Lift means diff drop, drop that 1" and you ground clearance only went up by 2" for 3" lift, yet you centre of gravity changed massively,
1.5" all round will allow you to run 32" tyres in a post 08 with ease, no diff drop required and cv angles are good

Post some reasons why 3" and what you plane to do with it to deceid if you really need it,
Bassed on that what suspension you require is the best suited
I tell most 30mm front and Nill in rear will make car ride level, and alowe bigger rubber with right offset wheels,
Then if you tow or have weight in look at doing rear, most go for extended shackles and new shocks, not legal but a good option.
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Rowsell, there's plenty of advice on 3" lift kits in here already. I've merged your question into one of the better 3" threads.

There's also a stack of information about what is LGA's and what is not in here, just use either of the two search features to find it.
Cheers Rod

2008 hilux lift kits

Postby Allan 1979 on Fri, 26 May 2017 2:18 +0000

Hi Guys

i have a 2008 sr hilux and am looking at putting a lift kit into it

it will mainly be for a little beach work and some mild off road use

i am looking at the 3 inch lift kit that comes with the diff drop and today i was told i would also need to do upper control arms. is this correct

the guy i was speaking to was telling me i should get a 2 inch suspension lift and then do a 2 inch body lift and get it mod plated

any help would be greatly appreciated

sorry just realised i have posted in the wrong year group lol

Yep you're in the wrong thread but I'll post my inexperienced opinion anyway (coming from someone with a 2007 and no lift kit). Why do you want 3-4 inches of lift? From your intended usage it's sounds over the top. Read an article somewhere that for every inch of lift after the first two, add another thousand. For my money, 50mm bigger wheels (265/70/16 or 31/10.5/15) and ~25mm suspension lift, no engineering required, no excess strain on CV's, no extended brake lines, no changing UCA's and no problems on any beach in WA. For heavy beach work, I reckon the money is better invested in exhaust and tune, couple of sets of tred pros and a shovel.

I agree, 50mm suspension and fit some 17x7.5 rims with 265/65/17 tyres. Will really need SR5 flares but not essential. Speedy sell 120 series Grande copies or simply grab some off a 17" wheeled SR5 2011-2015 4x4. Example: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toyota-Hilux ... SwuxFY0Mt-

Your original tyres on an SR will be 205R16C which are 734.4mm OD as far as I can tell (around 205/82/16)?

265/65/17 are 776.2mm diameter, so you are going up in OD by 41.8mm, let' s say 42mm. That is a lift by tyres of 21mm.

As far as I know most States allow 75mm max lift, and with these tyres and 50mm lift you will have 71mm. Any bigger in tyres and you are exceeding what is allowed.

The 265/65/17 tyres will also just about make your speedo correct too.

You might want to think about going up in front rotor size too to compensate for the bigger tyres as bigger OD tyres means equivalent loss in brake performance, use the rotors and calipers off a 2011 onwards diesel or 2012 onwards petrol 4x4 Hilux or go bigger with 120 series cruiser (Prado) rotors and calipers as per TRD Hilux. Either will bolt on, but you'll need the backing plates too.

Good advice HK. I was planning on sticking with 16" rims for the price but also for the extra flexibility in the tyre. Hadn't considered the bigger disk. Don't think WA has adopted the 75mm yet, we're still at 50mm total as far as I know, but will look into it some more, maybe fit some 1-2" adjustables in the mean time.
