If you are wanting to level out the truck then lift the back at a later stage then an adjustable strut like the matrix stuff Monster Rides sell is the go.

Abtheman wrote:What would you recommend for a lift kit (just for the front to begin with, as I want the truck to sit even) but will do the rear at a later stage. Is there any other mods required when installing a lift kit to get the truck level? For example, brake lines, abs cables, cv joint angles and relevant drive train components. All I want is reliability! If anyone knows of what I would require in the rear when I'm ready for that suspension upgrade let me know too. One other thing.....is it possible to use the stock struts with longer springs to get reliable lift?

yes guys its the cheapest option and safer than strut spacers.

Use King spring heavy duty raised 2" springs. these will suit. depending on your accessories there is a few different spring rates to choose from.

I run dobinson HD 2" raised spring s in stock front struts, had the rear leafs reset 2" with an extra leaf added (for constant load) and put in spare brand new hilux shocks that were given to me. And have done over 100,000ks with this setup including a trip to the cape.
Dont get me wrong its not the best set up(if you struts are new why not) but a more reliable /safer option than strut spacers. Looks like this . now

when the rear was installed fully loaded

the front end bushes are squeaking a little now so Id like to do an Ultimate/king spring combo suspension set up shortly when time and funds permit.

I did mine the other way around
Fitted new Bilsteins with the standard springs and got the lift with much better handling and ride over the factory shocks
Later when I fitted a bar and winch I only had to upgrade the springs to HD Kings

Why take the shocks apart twice when you could have just got the proper rasied springs installed into the new struts and fitted them once and be done with it.

Because if you put a HD spring in that is designed to carry a bar and winch and don't have them it will sit too high and ride like shit
Springs need to match the weight, I had the lift done from new but did not fit a bar and winch for another 18 months

Sorry i meant fitting the lifted 2'' spring not necessarily a HD one. Make so much sense if your going to lift the car to just fit a raised coil spring at the same time as getting a new shocks

Yeah with the Bilsteins they have adjustable spring seats so you can have a 3 inch lift with stock springs if you want

Woops okay furry muff

Probably save some bucks that way and spend the rest on adding a leaf or resetting the rear. Altho in the long run a proper raised / constant load set of rear springs is the way to go anyway.

thanks for the advice. Ill be ringing around for some quotes now. All i have up front is a full sized bullbar with the stock painted plastic bumper behind, so guessing ill need to HD springs to get it even?

I would just bite the bullet and get the 2" lifted HD king springs straight off the bat as your bound to add other heavier accessories under the bonnet at some stage...

I got the RAW nitro front shocks with the KTFR-101HD king springs for $660 inc gst, i fitted them at home and no problems in 100,000kms

Awesome thanks mate. Was going to ask if you had a part number for the king springs....makes life easier now. What year hilux is yours? Just one other thing though, is there any issue raising the front but doing no modifications to the bump stops up front as well. Would it be true if you raise the front you should install bump stops to suit, or is that only an issue with the strut spacers?

Personally i wouldnt bother with the longer bump stops until after 3" with proper shocks / springs but i deffinfately would install them if you were doing the strut spacers!

Wow - I've read the whole thread and still have questions…

How do I level the front end SAFELY without chucking out the OME suspension kit that I have and starting again? (Who makes a suspension system that leaves the nose dragging!) If strut spacers are the answer, what kits do I need?
- Diff drop kit
- Bump stop extensions

In a nut shell my question is:
- CAN strut spacers be done SAFELY/PROPERLY and if so EXACTLY what kits do you need?

Twake34 another bit of a reading exercise mate Sorry about that.
Have a look at this thread.

I ended up fitting some King springs into the OME front strut. Got some good results out of it until I replaced it with Ultimate gear last year. I got the springs from Repco for about $170 for the set. I have a write up in the link on how it all went. Brought it back up to +30mm which is where I wanted to be.
Cheers

I did the same, fitted HD springs to standard strut. 30mm lift.

Ultimate suspensions standard height, heavy duty. $225 delivered. $80 to fit them to struts. Did the rest myself. Give ultimate a call, don't go the dodgy strut spacers. No cheaper and illegal. Not worth the risk.

With the HD springs fitted does the upper control arm hit the springs at full extension?
