I am too looking at purchasing a Hilux in the near future and am keenly interested in what is happeneing with the ESC issue. I was looking at going with the new model with all the upgrades VSC 17 inch rims, bigger brakes etc. But if it's going to be a long and costly process to put an aftermarket kit (probably Ultimate Suspension) and some decent tyres on it i will rethink my vehicle choice and maybe just go for a second hand 2010 model without the gadgetry and hopefully low km's and no gremlins. :?

Any news on "ESC"????? Was just wondering as it has been a month since this post has been updated.

There still hasn't been any updates. Everything is still in Limbo. The attention has turned to other battles with the various state departments.

hi guys, just to let you know... i just got a 2011 hilux invincible which is same as your SR5's and i've fitted it with 33" mtz and mt 17" sidebitters. i've also fitted the Cal Offroad bilstein kit. my hilux as all the ESC and traction control and have no issues with the mods...

I live in Northern Ireland so the law permits these Mods

Also having no probs with rubbing on the front with 33" just had to trim couple inches of front bumper arch flares and allignment of wheels

Just read through a couple of emails from Ken which came in while I was away. It looks like we are finally getting a bit closer to a final result with all these new laws. It is now in place that the responsibility is on the individual suppliers to ensure that the suspension and tyres do not affect the ESC programs. As we have installed hundreds of kits on MN Tritons and new Hiluxs with ESC, we are confident that there are no adverse affects with these modifications. In the long term, it does look like the 2" lift will remain "owner certified" on vehicles with ESC but there is a chance that any higher than 2" will not be permitted even with an engineer's certificate. This could be a massive blow for the new Hilux and all other late model vehicles. I will try and keep you all updated but a lot of the information is still confidential as it is still being finalised. Personally I don't think there will be too many radical changes, but we will see increased enforcement of the current regulations.

Hi Brendan, as I said above I have fitted 3.5" lift kit to a 2011 ESC hilux and don't feel any difference to handling.

I'm just wondering what way the lifts supposed to affect the vechile with ESC?

Will it do my hilux any harm?

Hope you guys over in australia get this problem sorted, it would be a shame to stop modding the hilux in this way!

From our testing there are no adverse affects on the ESC. The biggest problem is there are so many difference in the Electronic Stability programs between all the brands so the Transport authorities made a general statement across the board saying you cannot modify suspension, wheel all tyres on these vehicles without an engineer's certificate. Obviously it's not right and that's why there has been such a big fuss about it in Australia. The rules cover all vehicles equipped with ESP's from Holden commodores to 100 series land cruisers with VSC. Thousands of these vehicles have been modified over the years without any problems. Some vehicles like the new Range Rover and Jeeps are bit different and require reprogramming for lift kits and larger tyres. Because of these minorities, the whole industry is affected.

3.5" is a big lift on any vehicle and does require a few extra components to ensure everything works safely. If done properly I don't think you will have any problems.

Ok thanks Brendan, what are the extra components you reccommend with the lift kit?

At the moment there are no dramas with ESC. The RTA has put it back on the companies selling the gear to ensure it's safe.

The problem with us Aussies is that we are over Governed over regulated and too lazy to get off our collective arses and do something about it. Not to mention the Green movement who would prefer us all riding around on pushbikes.
Thanks for your well wishes we need them. ;)

What is the latest on this?

I live in QLD and am considering a 2 inch lift on my vehicle with VSC. I dont want to spend money only to have to remove it if the law changes.

:(

i am with you rhys511, just got the new 2012 sr5 and also want to go with a 2inch lift without reading up on it first, hoping not to regret the decision of upgrading to the SR5.

None of the laws have been finalised as there is competition to every draft produced. My understanding atm is that a 2" lift and 265's are legal. This changes all the time though so I would seek the advice of your local transport authority regarding the mods.

Just put a deposit on a 2013 hilux dual cab - want an SR5 but thinking I will have to go SR and upgrade due to ESC as plan on 265/70's and a lift.

Has there been any updates on laws in NSW regarding mods on ESC vehicles?

Cheers,

Ben.

I dont know why you would want esc in a hilux, do u no good off road and if you need it on road then you should probably go hand in your lisence coz your not fit to be driving, my advice to those buying a new car would be to go a non esc model. When they stop making them then we may all be in big trouble if this goes forward. I dont know how you get the car home and back to stock after a good smash. Once insurers wise up to this law they will be all over it and not paying a cent for any smash on a esc car with mods and probably the cops too, write you off as at fault then and there
