I'm looking for a guide/tech to what coils are available, what spec's (length, diameter of steel, load rating), what will give max height but also maintane strength with all fruits on front end.
Example;
OME 884's
King Springs (HD's)
Ultimate
TD
Etc Etc Etc

Strut info not required.

torsion, check my build up. I have the specs there for the efs coils and my ride height, this is with arb bar,winch,driving lights and dual battery setup. I reckon there coils are one of the best rated and they are 18mm not 17mm like most.

Big ask because you can get different results from different manufacturers for the same weight spring.
The mathematics of springs is a very complex equation and I don't pretend to understand it.
The advise I give people all the time is: Find a person or a suspension shop or springworks that you can talk to and tell them your axle weights loaded and empty, and what you are trying to achieve. That way, if it's not set up the way you want they will change it until it's right. Or get a different suspension shop.

Simply looking for a guide all can refer too from manufacture spec's, coupled together with all those applications currently being used by forum members. This way people can refer too, be informed and make their own choice. (I may have to get this info together?)

Springs are measured in free length, coils (over length of spring) and wire diametre...
I can give you a few specs of the top of my head...
I cant remember coils on any makes but. Will restrict is to just wire diameter and free length.

King spring specs...
KTRF101. 375mm, 17mm wire diametre.
KTRF101HD. 375mm, 18mm wire diametre.
KTRF101HHD. 390mm, 18mm wire diametre.

OME spring specs. (30mm lift)
OME883. 375mm, 17mm wire diametre.
OME884. 390mm, 17mm wire diametre.
OME885. 395mm, 17mm wire diametre.

Dobinsons.
Part #?? 390mm, 17mm wire diametre..

EFS....?????

Monroe????


Remember mixing and matching with struts will also alter lifts ect.... etc.... And adjustability....

Im running OME struts, with KTRF101HDs.... They have kept the advertised 30mm lift of the OME specs without any sag.
Winch, bull bar and dual batteries...

Front axle load was 1320kg when I put it on the weigh bridge last time....
Its a broad subject.... If you know any specs and can correct me if I am wrong post up.

Hi Torsion , I also have EFS springs up front on 08 d/cab and second Crossports comments re quality !
Accessories fitted are: ARB delux winch bar ,Premier winch,dual battery,rallye 4000 lights,ARB canopy and roof rack.
The total front lift achieved above standard factory height was 73mm and has not sagged at all in 10,000km.
The following height measurments are from the bottom of the 15" SR5 alloy through the centre to the bottom of flare. I think this how most people measure it.
New vehicle, No accessories: 701mm
Vechicle with all accessories fitted without suspension kit: 683mm
With EFS coils and EFS Elite struts : 774mm

Part No ; TPR-104HDE
Load rating : Constant 95kg to 120kg load bearing accessories, 800 lbs/inch.
18mm wire.

Thats the go fella's, TOP INFO. The topic was originally for front "Coils" only, we may have to start another thread looking at strut options as well.

Tough Dog Spec's;

TD2974 - 375mm (Free Height) - 17mm (Wire Diameter)
TD2974H - 370mm (Free Height) - 18mm (Wire Diameter)

They also do a "mine vehicle" spring, designed for vehicles carrying extreme weight in rear thus front coming up.
Apparently shorter spring to allow for more up travel.

They also do a Prado HD Coil that will fit in the lux but they dont recommend;
Approx 380mm - 18mm

Interestingly, TD were saying King Springs have a smaller inside diameter on bottom coil (tighter coil) and can rub on strut??

I am adding on to the information from Skog on the front coil springs for our Hilux which basically the front end are the same as the Prado 120.

Has anyone here had Lovells supsension installed on their lux? mine has a saggy front end and im looking to gain a bit more clearance throughout the ute, and fit a bit bigger tyres. I dont want it to be rough as guts though!

How's your Hilux setup? Any bar or winch etc.

This was what they suggested for me with steel bulbar, winch, dual batt, side rails (which i dont have yet) to get a 50m lift over std.

I have updated the info provided by Daveo.

However, the Lovells spring rate seems awfully high and the free height seems to be very low as compared to the other manufacturers.

The wire diameter is also the thickest.

Can anyone confirm Lovell's specifications?

i did query this with the lovells guy via email and they are the specs. i was surprised as well.

I had three set's of lovells replaced on my previous lux because they kept sagging they eventually put Kings HD 's in and never had a problem since.

The hardest thing with coil springs is actually selecting the right one to use. As this thread has shown there is a multitude of different specs out there and just reading off paper is not always the best option. A lot of factors including the vehicle weight and especially the shock absorber will affect the height and ride of each coil. At Ultimate we don't supply 'off the shelf' suspension components. Each of our kits is tailor made to suit the individual vehicle. To accomplish this, we use a range of shocks absorbers which are completely adjustable (both in valving and height) and 5 different coils. I've listed the coils below, but it is hard to work out exactly what heights you will achieve as you need to assess these on a one on one basis with the correct shock absorber. Of course I'm limited with what information I can give out on the net but here are the basics.

17mm wire, 660lb/inch

Thanks for including that mate, and no that wasn't a typo. These coils have different free heights and coil counts.

here is a reply from king springs i got this morning

"We now have 4 options for this model ktfr-101 375 fh 17mm wire 660lb
ktfr-101h 385fh 17mm wire 660lb
ktfr-101hd 370fh 18mmwire 800lb
ktrf-101hhd 390fh 18mmwire 800lb
The only way you will get 50mm lift with this weight on the front is to use the hd or hhd. But have had reports of the chassis cracking on this model with weight on the front using the h/duty coils.The ktfr-101h will give you approx 40mm lift but may not last if used for constant 4x4."

anybody care to comment on the chassis cracking?

King Springs info update already.

I use the KTFR-101 and I have a ARB bar upfront without a winch and I have a lift of about 40mm.

Since you have a ARB bar together with a electric winch and dual battery, I reckon the 101HD would be good.

As far as chassis cracking, don't think we have heard any. I know Skoggy has the 101HD with a ARB bar + winch.
