Bilstein and Suspension Lift Questions...

hmm... sounds a bit strange.. which rear leaves have you got ? what are they rated to ?
are they rubber or polyurethane bushes ? how long has it been in for ?

how much weight are you carrying constantly in the back ?

I run the OME 400kg constant rear springs in mine, and when my aux fuel is empty and Ive got no load in the back, then i sit @ about 3" lift.. no change of direction or anything though (unless it goes sideways in the wet ;))..

It sounds like you have movement in the axle similar to axle tramp. There are a few things you can do. Firstly, check the installation.

-If the spring hangers were tightened when the vehicle was jacked up, the bushes could be overstressed and not allowing the hangers to move properly.
-The axle can move a fair bit if the hangers are on a bad angle.
-The U/Bolts could be loose on one side.

If all of this seems fine, you can fit a rebound leaf to the spring to reduce axle movement, help the shock dampen the spring and control the height. For the members not familiar with rebounds, they are individual leaves which are installed on top of the main leaf and are not fixed at either end. They are not a load carrying leaf and are designed to i) reduce axle tramp ii) control the spring's rebound iii) absorb energy and disperse it from either end. The rebound leaves also protect the main leaf from braking and are an option we have used for years on racing and touring vehicles looking for a more reliable spring design and less axle tramp.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm not sure if it has been covered before but after my suspension lift I have noticed a definate shudder coming from the rear whenever the vehicle is under torque/acceleration in the lower gears. I mentioned it to the shop that fitted my Bilsteins shocks with King HD front Springs and EFS comfort leafs in the rear. They said it was due to a number of reasons:

1. My tyre pressure is too high at 40psi which they say is causing the suspension to feel too rigid and that is why I am feeling the shudder. However I've been running my tyre pressures at this level prior to the lift and the shudder only became noticeable immediately after the lift.
2. My suspension hasn't settled and I need a load in the rear or larger rims and tyres to assist in settling the rear leafs. Though I just travelled 1500km with a tray full of camping gear going from Bris to Fraser, back to Bris and down to Coffs and back to Bris with no change in the shudder with tray full or empty.
3. That there is a clutch shudder and I need a new clutch as this is a familiar problem with the Hilux's. However the shudder is present from 1500rpm to 25000rpm under load with no change if the clutch is engaged or disengaged.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Because at the moment I am getting very frustrated with the shop that fitted this kit as they originally told me the problem would be rectified with a tail shaft spacer and retensioning the bolts. When I went to have this spacer fitted they began telling me all of the above reasons why I still feel the shudder.

Please let me know if you have any other ideas as to what may be causing this shudder as it's quite annoying.

Thanks,

Hendo

Hey guys, just thought I'd ask my question here instead of on a new thread. Where can I get additional grooves machined into my billies in Perth? My suspension guy doesnt do it unfortunately.

My suspension is up 80mm and I got a 50mm bodylift, but I'd like to go that touch higher, like maybe 20 mm?

the kit i was looking at for 3" lift came with longer brake lines , so i guess they must recommend using longer ones. maybe someone has fitted some and can let us know.

They aren't needed, both brake lines and drop diff kit. I am running cal 3" lift and so are many other members, I would say the majority aren't running these but some are! I think some people just feel little bit more at ease if they are running these mods.... My 2c anyway!

Front they arnt needed but rear should be extended, or the standard bracket should be bent to relive the stretch on the rear brake line. To do it properly it should be extended

Spoke to cal from Cal Offroad about the 3 inch lift on Friday, he said you don't need the drip diff kit.. His words "I wouldn't bother putting it on my own car". And the extended brake lines... Not needed on the front, and depends on what shock you go with for the rear. Bilstein not needed, skyjacker needed.

Yes with the skyjacker shocks in the rear, they offer slightly better articulation which is the reason behind needing the extension for sky and not Billie...

Anyone know a good place in Perth to get Bilstein shocks /King Springs/EFS leafs as a package.

I was quoted $2000 installed for Tjm 2" lift, and wanted to get a comparable price.
Cheers

Monaro Offroad installs Bilsteins and has told me that he has never seen an issue with CVs with a 3" lift... Im over my OME suspension as is only about 40mm lift and the rear is almost 100mm higher. So am considering Billies with 3" on the front... Is everybody happy with them?

I have a 3.5 - 4" Bilstein lift on my 06 Truck and find them to be excellent - my CV angles are a little more aggressive than I would like but I have not had an issue so far (10000kms). I will be adding the MR diff relocation brackets in the not too distant future and the MR UCA. Value for money is excellent with the bilstein setup.

However, if I was looking now and had the budget I would go the MR adjustable front struts without hesitation!! that just me
