Heavy duty front coils

Heavy duty front coils

Postby muddyhilux2020 on Sun, 24 May 2020 8:32 +0000

2006 hilux 2.5 d4d double cab
It's a 4x4 model

Planning on a 6bt conversion and 2wd conversion as well

So what coils would people recommend if adding an extra 300kg for the engine? Although would be less than that as would be ditching the front diff and shafts (30~50kg?)

And zf s5-42 gearbox, isnt probably much heavier if anything (may be actually lighter than Toyota box and transfer case!)

Standard front plastic bumper, no bars etc
Only extra weight currently up front is a 28" LED light bar!

Edit:
Not worried if it sits a little lower at front, compared to the back, like they do standard anyway

If stock springs would be ok, I could always fit a front spacer to lift it back up a little

Theres spring and shock database that I often refer to over on the prado forum (below). It includes some of whats available for the hilux too. 300kgs is a lot but without the running gear, it will be might be the same as having 150kgs of bullbar and winch hanging off the front.

Maybe start with 800lb/in springs and see how you go?

Would it be possible to run dual stock coils? Wound together?

Perhaps with a couple of clamps to hold them together near the top and bottom

That way the spring rate would increase (each coil sharing the load with the other)

I mocked up having the extra weight on front, basically got 2 stocky blokes to sit on top of engine, both weigh over 100kg and even with them sat on, suspension didnt drop much (1 to 1.5")
So with front diff etc removed, and the heavier engine, I'm hoping it will be about right, plus I will be losing the transfer box and big long toyota gearbox
And the engine will be mounted further back anyway due to length

So will see how it all goes!

I dont think any of the off the shelf suspension kits are up to carrying the weight of a 6BT, its not about the drop but how it handles whilst driving under varying conditions. id think you'll need custom made coils. A 6BT has a lot of gravity in it. Cool conversion to do if you can make it fit, they are pretty tall too. Its a bit backwards as they are dinosaur technology but would be a street weapon
