7.5 cm lift - diff relocation needed?

7.5 cm lift - diff relocation needed?

Postby emiloberg on Mon, 18 Jun 2018 3:08 +0000

Hi,

I just had Old Man Emu suspension (76-120 kg springs, OME2884 and 400-600 kg leafs, EL045R) mounted to take care of the added weight of the camper and bull bar. However, it gave more of a lift than I expected. Lifted front about 7.5 cm and back almost 10 cm. Back is still missing about 200 kg of weight, so that'll lower a bit.

I'm by no means a mechanic, but I'm a bit worried that the the lift is more than what the axles can handle (that is the limiting factor, right?). When parking and wheels were at their extreme position, I heard a small metal-to-metal like thud.

Do I need to lower my differential(s)? Or anything else?

Also, I giving her a new set of BFG KO2 tires. Will larger wheels affect this in any way?

I don't plan on doing any hard core rock crawling, but I'm preparing the car for a trans-Africa trip and I'm a bit scared that this lift will destroy something.

Are those lifted figures above how it was or above how it was originally? Mine has a 50mm (nominal) lift an the front came up 75mm from where it was but it is only 40mm above the original height.

Before and after mounting the suspension. Measured at the top of the bull bar.

No idea what the original height is. The 'lux is 8 years old, but has only has 40 000 km on the odometer. I still have the original springs if that can be of any help.

The OME gear will generally give you 45-55mm in the front which is deliberate to maintain workable driveline alignment without diff drops etc.. Your old stock suspension with a steel front bar would have sagged around 25mm from the original spec. Thus, effectively you have a 50mm loft over stock. I wouldnt be concerned.

Oh! I didn't even think about the fact that I had the bullbar there and that sagged it down quite a bit!

Feel a little bit stupid, but also super happy and relieved!

Super thanks creaky!
