Rear wheel clunking

Rear wheel clunking

Postby brian.bozo on Sun, 30 Jul 2017 12:40 +0000

Hi all
I have a 2009 dual cab. Nothing special, just a few basic mods.
I have a small worry.
I know that rear wheel noise can be related to wheel bearings...very familiar with that; but when my car is parked...in/out of gear, doesn't matter....handbrake on/off doesn't matter....
I shake the rear wheels (both sides the same) from the top of the tyre and hear a clunk/clunk sound. Sounds as if the axles at the diff end are flopping up and down...clunk/clunk/clunk.
The car drives fine, sounds fine....no issues whatsoever.
The car has done 3 trips to Alice Springs via Great Central Rd; via Sandy Blight Jn Rd; via Canning Stock Route as well as a number of other long distance trips throughout WA......no problems.
I don't want to go fixing something that isn't broke.
Do other hiluxes do the same?
I've got 40 years mechanical experience, so not new to it, but haven't experienced this sound before.
Can a few of you give the rear wheels a shake and tell me if your hilux does the same?
Thanks
Brian

Pretty sure mine does it and I know for a fact that my sister in laws does it too. Wheel bearings all feel fine, I'm a mechanic by trade too and I've asked a few guys and we all scratched our heads over it.

Mine does this as well....I put it down to the idea my leaf pack was moving a bit as I was told it had movement issues when I was getting something else sorted. Bolts a FT too.... Maybe it's not the lead pack...

I just found out the other day that mine does it too. Sprayed some lanolin on the inside of the drum assembly/axle area and it pretty much went away.

I had this happen when I coated everything with lanolin before heading to the beach, after inspection we put it down to the lanolin getting into the spring leaves and letting them slip around a bit easier, so I degreased them and it wasn't as bad. It was noticeable when driving up the gutter into the driveway on an angle and when I pushed and pulled the tray from side to side.

Actually Phildo, that would make sense and maybe why mine has been clunking when driving up guttering, etc. I may try the degreaser on the springs.
