Steering rack replace or rebuild??

Steering rack replace or rebuild??

Postby TOYZX on Tue, 23 May 2017 6:38 +0000

Hey lads! Noticed my steering rack leaking out of the input shaft yesterday. Anyone replaced their rack or had a go at rebuilding one. Haven't been able to find any reco ones cos apparently they rust badly inside and aren't usually serviceable. New genuine is closer to 2k and most aftermarket go for 900-1500. I have found seal kits but just wanted to ask the brains trust of thier opinion. Cheers Luke.

Luke, have done 2 in 3 months :? :? After tearing the boot and getting a gut full of water i replaced the rack and pump with ebay jobbies. Cheap, like 300 odd for rack and 180 for pump. All went well for a few weeks then it would freeze almost solid first thing, had to give it a good reef to get it working. So took it to a front end specialist next time and had both replaced for around 900 (bout 300 for pump and 600 for rack). And got warranty... They reused the rubber boots that i had bought for the ebay ones rather than the shit plastic ones they come with...So far so good, been 12months ???

Dunno if you've ever had the rack out of a lux before but there's definatley a trick to it ;)

I got an ebay one 70,000k ago and touch wood hasn't been a drama since. With prices of new vs rebuilds I reckon you would be better off with a new one. Bugger of a job to do..... whats the trick Oggy? :D

After some serious head scratching and much laying under ute looking and pretending i was thinking :? :? I came to the conclusion that the easiest way for it to come out was to lift the motor. Had a look at the mounts and found that you don't have to undo anything. Just put a trolley jack and block of wood on edge of sump behind crank pulley and gently lift motor a bit.

That's what I did - was hoping you had a better way again, took me six hours last time.... thought that $600 to a mechanic would have been worth while, had all sorts of frozen bolts in there....
