Curved spring on front shocks. What do you guys think?

Postby holyman_999 on Sat, 31 Oct 2015 10:23 +0000

G'day all, been lurking for ages, this place is the tits.

I've got a quick question and I'd love for you guys to weigh in.

I just received my new suspension, and one of the front springs looks to be curved.

I'm just wondering if this is normal, and will settle once installed (by being lined up, and bounced on once or twice, etc) or if the spring was fitted to the shock wrong or the spring is faulty, etc. I'll post up a picture once I figure out how.

Thanks in advance, this place is a wealth of knowledge, and from what I've seen, everyone is pretty cool.

Cheers
Smithy.

What brand are these? Possibly not seated correctly.
I had this one one of my struts. $80 + time taking it to a suspension specialist out of town but not matter what he tried he couldn't get it to sit straight.
Had to return to supplier - that may be your best bet as the coil is likely to come into contact with the tube if fitted as is.

That's what I was thinking. They're blue Max. On closer inspection, i think youre right about the seating, as the three top bolts are not in the right position relative to the top rubber (hope that makes sense). If I had a set of spring clamps, I'd try and adjust it, but I don't think I want to spend the cash to get some only to find it made no difference. Anyone in the Darwin area have a set they'd be willing to loan for six-pack?

I'll contact the seller and see what he says.

Thanks for the quick reply, Deadly.

   Is it just me or is the strut bent........the top hat appears to be on an angle compared to the other one.......
I certainly wouldn't be driving on them.....

My thoughts exactly, Richo. I don't think its bent, but with the plastic shroud its hard to tell. Top hat doesn't seem that bad close up, but in photos it looks heaps worse.

Even if the shock itself is not bent, that spring would have to be putting uneven pressure on the seals of the shock, bound to fail early. I wouldn't risk using it.

I've had a few pairs of struts like this from new, different brands, all heavy duty coils. None of them have been a problem. 90,000kms from the first set, 2nd set had done around 65,000kms when I took them out and have them as spares now. Maybe not ideal but they never caused an issue.

Its caused from not having the top installed correctly.
