3 inch bilstein lift kit questions.

3 inch bilstein lift kit questions.

Postby ben.vial13 on Fri, 21 Feb 2014 10:11 +0000

Hi guys,

New to the forum here so here i go. I just bought and fitted a 3" Bilstein lift kit from superior engineering for my 2010 SR Dual Cab and am very happy so far with the kit, the only thing that i was worried about and wandering if anyone else either has the same kit or similar problem with another kit but the rear shocks seem to be the limiting factor for the suspension in the rear.

I called up superior and asked them and they said that is how it is supposed to be but i have just been speaking to a few friends and we all think it doesnt sound right.

See when we installed the kit, we had to raise the rear diff by 1" to get the shocks onto there mounts.

Any info would be great and cheers in advance.

Ben.

What weight rating are the rear springs?

It's so you don't rip the brake line off. Extended lines means you can have more travel hence longer shocks. Superior can do what ever you want from mild to wild, you just need to specify your requirements up front.

Search is your friend as there is endless amounts of info on suspension and Bilstein on here.

Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum, excuse my ignorance if I should not be posting my question here, but here we go.
I'm getting a lift kit put in my 2008 hilus SR diesel, I wanted to be able to put in the 265/75 R16 tyres (roughtly 32") so I suggested to my suspension guy to put in the 3 inch lift at the front and the 2" at the back, he agreed and said he prefers to put in the bilstein strut (with tough dog spring) and the front (3 inch) and the tough dog 2" at the back, I've heard combining different brands has caused abnormal noises from struts/ suspensions, is this true?

any help would be appreciated.

Na mate this isn't an issue. I run bilstein struts with cals Hd springs , then the rear are cals leafs with tough dog shocks, I'm really impressed wih ride quality and flex despite being HD springs. Hardly had a squeak or rattle, but this can occur with any brand

Thanks for quick reply, I'm getting the full kit 300kg to GVM including greasable shackles fitted for $1950, does this sound reasonable?

Just make sure if it is supposed to have 300kg in the back as a constant load that the weight is there. If it isnt the springs can make your ride rough, and make the car sit higher than it should and cause damage to the shocks as they max out on bumps. I have seen shocks with mounts snapped off from this.

Thanks BNA, mate I don't always have 300kg there but I do carry a tool box which should be around 200kg.

Another thing that's been on my mind after talking to a mate was the 3 inch lift at the front, my suspension guy at OL thinks no need for any types of modifications in regards to brake line etc. but a mate tells me 3 inch lift could potentially create problems like CV joints popping out, is this something I should be worried about?

Thanks

Front brake lines will be fine, CV angles will be less than ideal. For street work you will be fine, if venturing off road, you will need to consider your CV angles when driving or fit a proper diff drop kit to help you out.

Yeah makes sense however I spoke to Cal today he said the call off-road bilstein front struts do limit the drop of the wheel so it's within the tolerance range and will not stress the CV joints so no need for a diff drop kit :)

So even with 3" lift in front, a diff drop kit is not _necessary_ unless i take it off road? (nor extended brake lines?)

Mate if you chuck a pair of caloffroad 3 inch silver struts ( bilsteins) at the front even when off-roading you don't need a diff drop kit speak to Cal he'll tell you exactly why you don't need it but it's always better to put one on, my suspension guy at opposite lock chucked a diff drop kit (at no cost) on anyways but he also said it wouldn't be necessary

Not even brake lines, but bear in mind not all 3 inch lifts are capable of getting away like that

Do different branded struts seat the CVs at different angles? From what i've been told or read up, a majority of the people have advise to put a DD kit so i don't go through CV's like undies.

Dude, 3" is 3" it doesn't matter what sticker is on the outside of the strut ;) as I said before, if you're using it on the street then you will be fine, some members have racked up 60,000 km plus on 3" lift without diff drop. If you plan to go off road then you will run into problems. Although many have done it without drama, you just need to drive accordingly. Ie: avoid the loud pedal when at full droop especially with the steering turned. Or fit a proper diff drop, not one of the $50 1" jobs as they rotate the diff by 1" giving you an effective drop of only half an inch, hardly worth it.

Hey guys, I was about to get this caloffroad 3" kit. So no need to get brake line? is that only for bigger lifts or is there even a benefit for extended brake lines?

if you're doing the rear 3" you would need the brake lines changed

So I did the 3" front and 2" rear lift however I have a problem, lucky I measured the bottom of rim to the panel arch measurement before the lift (read 720mm) now after 2 days of the front suspensions settling down it's reading (770mm) so definitely not a 3" lift (makes me doubt the experience of the guys who have done it) :x .

As I said before the front lift has the caloffroad bilstein 3" shocks and the tough dog supposedly 3" coil spring (very much questionable) the part number on the tough dog front coil spring read TDC974 anyone know if this is 2" or 3" coil spring? practically I'm only getting 50mm raise however I want to have an evidence before I say anything to the guys who done it for me.

so any help or a reference to a parts number listing would be appreciated :)
