PROS AND CONS OF WHEEL SPACERS?

Just wanted to know if anyone is running wheel spacers on their HIlux? Are they just weakening the studs and are they harder to get ur wheels balanced right? Pro's and Con's please.

Im pretty sure the slip on one's are illegal in NSW, but I think the bolt on type are not.

There is a bolton type called Hubcentric Bolton spacers seem to be the go going by another site.

Personally I'd look into whats illegal and whats not as "if" (yes the big if) you have any drama's it could go pear shaped real quick. Also heard the slip on type is not good for the balance of your wheel.

Mate if you get the right offset rims you wont need them, I look at it like your taking a short cut and that area of the car in my opinion is not a good place to take shortcuts.

If you ask me your better off getting adaptors made, this way there legal and bolt directly to hub and have there own studs.
The other advantage is you can have them made to suit any stud pattern.

John, I was under the assumption that the pic above were classified as wheel "spacers" not adaptors.......

can someone clarify for me? Alot of the Yanks use those "adaptors" as in the pic above when running larger rubber on factory wheels.

wheel spacers are illegal the hub locate the rim and carry the weight of the car the studs and wheel nuts hold the rim in place

The style here are spacers and float between wheel and hub(not good and illegal)
The one the i showed you bold to hub and are never removed, And have a locate for wheel on other side.
Ive used them on engineered cars before with no problems, and also had rwc done with them.
In all of my cases they were used to adapt kingwood stud pattern to commodore.
120.65x5 in and 120x5 out with a 30mm offset.

I am referring to the ones in the pics above, that they bolt on to the current studs and then have there own studs.

I had when spacers on an old sierra they were 1.5 inch think , very similar to the ones in the pic above. They are aluminium and one came off on the road. The rear tyre hit the tray and blew the sidewall was a bfg Muddy so not a light tyre.
Also had them on my 06 hilux when purchased as it had 22" rims the ex owner wanted a wider stance.

I think you are better working with the rim offset to get the desired effect you want.

Wheel spacers and coil spacers are all bad news...

Hey. I have them on my ln106 I had a wheel fall off. I have also been in a mates Landcruiser when we had a wheel fall off going bout 80 km. make sure you lock tite all the threads.

I would be avoiding them at all costs unless I had exhausted all other avenues.

here is a pic after my wheel fell off. If a wheel spacer failed on my suzuki sierra ute, i don't think they are up to grade for a hilux.

the mud guard and light were all bent as the tyre rolled towards the rear.

No mate it still happens. The landcruisers crack and brake when loaded. Must say never seen them on a hilux.

I have what you aussies I guess call adaptors, those that bolt to the hub, then have their own studs on which the rim is bolted. Bueno, the trick with those is the thickness of said adaptor, if you go beyond 1.23 inches, you risk, by outstreching the placement of your tyres, to vary weight distribution and angle on your cv axles....wich leads to breaking, these vehicles are carefully engineered, so when you vary in any way how the weight of the machine is distributed on all 4 tyres, you have to take that in consideration or breakages will occur, expensives ones usually.
I got mine when I got my 3 inch lift and 32 bfg muddies, in order to avoid as much rubbing of the tires in the space alloted. and even then had to do some slight alignment mods.
Also, the enhancement in the lift meant needing a bit of a wider stance to counterbalance, you know avoiding roll overs and the such.
I apologize if my explanation is not too clear as my technical knowledge is all in spanish, not english, so technicalities are difficult to explain for me.

Yeah I know they can cause issues but I've ran plenty of these on road cars and even used them on my old track car on occasions with no dramas. I would prefer to just change to a wider wheel with lower offset but my wife has to have a say in the matter and she prefers the stock wheels over EVERYTHING I have shown her so this was my last ditch idea at some stance lol

I am considering some hubcentric 30mm wheel spacers on my 2012 Hilux invincible, I am running toyota steel wheels with 265 70 r17 Copper discoverer STT , no lift just standard height, question is am I likely to encounter any issues if I go ahead and fit them? Also any pics of similar trucks with spacers fitted would be much appreciated,

also they have a habit of speeding up the wear and tear on your wheel bearings.
