SR5 with 18" rims

I am in the process of buying a sr5 4x4 and have a couple of questions about rims. The rims that i like and wanted to fit only come in 18" . I want to run all terrain tyres , will there be a clearance problem with these . will prob have a 2" lift . I have done a search and found plenty on 16 " and 17" but not much on 18. Is there any reason , besides the price , not to run 18 rims. the new hilux comes with 17's so it is only 1" more, should be legal . any help would be great.
thanks

hey Chop

the main reason we dont use 18'' rims looking from a 4x4 point of view is because the tyres dont ''bag'' as much when using lower pressures there for not offering as much traction.
another reason is the rim is more prone to damage from rocks and such.

they should fit providing you use the correct rim offset and tyre choice

cheers Troy

thanks guys , i didn't realise that about the bagging . I'm not going to be doing real serious 4x4 , just beach , mud tracks sort of stuff. not sure what to do now, i really like these rims but they don't come any smaller.
cheers

Agree with what Troy said, you will also be limited to tyre choice on any offroad style tyre in a low profile plus they will be expensive.
Have you considered getting road tyres for your chosen rims and then get a cheap set of rims with offroad tyres for playing in the mud etc??

don't really want to be using 2 sets of rims/tyres , it is an idea though. pro comp do some all terrain tyres ect for this size , are they a decent brand , haven't looked at many others besides BF Good, but they don't seem to do 18.

A bloke at my work looked for ages trying to find 18" A/T's in the exact same specs as OEM for his beastly Ssanyong Rexton. There are at least a dozen tyre shops within 10 minutes of here but he had to drive an hour to get some not so aggresive Continental A/T's for $360 each. The next cheapest was $405. If I was you I'd be shopping harder for a rim you like in a smaller diameter so you can buy an A/T that is fit for purpose. You'll get a more comfortable ride out of a taller sidewall as well.

Sorry for going off topic , I was just taking my medicine from a previous post

But maddog has a very valid point. You are substantially limiting your tyre choice and availability plus the lower profile tyre walls and rims will be much more susceptible to damage in an offroad situation. Not sure how much touring and 4by stuff you intend on doing but when you move out of the built up areas you will find it difficult to find a replacement tyre should you need one.

These issues of course may be irrelevant to your needs but something else to consider

and technically...(if its the new hilux due anyday now).....then by changing to an 18 inch rim it is illegal.
regulations stipulate that it is illegal to change wheel or tyre size or lift a vechile fitted with electronic stability control.But...and its a big BUTT(i like big butts and i cannot lie) :D .....as u may have read on some other post here in the forum the AAAA is lobying against these laws and headway is slowly being made. so heres hoping hey!

Ive just fitted 285 60 R18 in Cooper LTZ and after taking them for a round 2000km trip to the flinders I am very happy with them. They don't bag as much as 75profiles will in say a 265 75 R16 but with 285mm on the dirt they have plenty of grip.

Without a lift and high swept bullbar they will just touch on full lock under articulation.

How did you go with the 18s mate? I have a 2014 SR5 and have Been trying to decide on 17s or 18s myself. 18s are getting more common now and I like the way they fill up the wheel arches. The rims I want only come in a positive 10 offset and plan on fitting r18 265 60 ko2 s Im not planning on lifting it yet. If anyone else knows if this set up would work would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Chris.
