Ok.......so I had my Lux serviced at my local dealer today and asked the specific question of the optional accessory guy......"What is the largest optional tyre available from Toyota for my 2012.".....He said the SR5 rim and tyre set up (265/65/17, 30.6', 765 mm) was an option for my vehicle........so I am assuming that I can fit 50 mm larger than this.....32.6', 815 mm tyres so something like a 285/70-16......
That would mean that I would still need to get the 2' lift and tyre combo certified as I would be over the 50 mm total lift allowable in Queensland.......I think......

EDIT: So now I think I can get away with a 2" lift and 50 mm bigger tyre diameter and still be under the 75mm total lift in Qld.

Cheers Richo :ugeek:

^ I would also like to know if anything has changed.. From what I have seen 50mm BL is legal anything over needs to be engineered and total lift can't be more than 75mm. So I'm assuming if you fit a 33" tyre and 2" lift you should be right??

Correct me if i'm wrong please :D

Yep 75mm combo of Tyres and Suspension......but you can get bigger tyres n suspension certified......that's if you can find a certifier that will answer the phone....they must be very busy

Edit to say this info is out of date........

Ok so I've just found this info on this site:
http://www.dbautotech.com.au/

Specifically:
We are getting a high volume of calls about 4WD suspension and lift kits. The regulations for lift kits in Qld are:-

2” susp lift allowed
2” tyre diameter increase allowed
2” body lift allowed
If you to # 1 and #2 together (or alone) – OK no mod plate reqd
If you do #3 alone – OK no mod plate needed.
If you combine # 1 & 2 & 3 – LS9/10 mod codes reqd – this requires lane change test, design drawings etc.. This will get expensive and your car will possibly fail the lane change test.
You cannot exceed the lifts listed in above #1,2 and 3. No engineers in Qld can approve a susp lift over 2" (50mm) spring lift.

Edit......this info appears to be at odds with the inspection check list in LS7... :? :? :? :? :? :? :?
Edit 2......there is no date on this webpage..... :? :? :? :? :? :?

Richo, my comment is..... find another engjneer.
The VMN body lift instructions now includes contact details for a Brisbane based engineer who has signed off on a number of our kits. One of them has a window sill above my shoulder. There is a procedure in the regs to measure tyre size and it has to be done on the vehicle. He says you have to measure the tyres because the normal calculations do not return correct results. On a couple of occasions he has been happy with tyre sizes that we thought would be illegal....

Can someone please clarify for me. People keep Saying you can go a 2" tyre diameter increase off the largest option tyre for your model. Does that mean the model being a hilux I can use the sr5 tyre size or only the SR tyre size?

I want to keep everything legit but this is not very clear.

I am running 265/75/16 on a SR 06 is this legal?

Cheers

Hey guys,
I was looking at upgrading to the 265/75/16's until I did a bit of research and found it was illegal.

I rang the bloke fitting my tyres and the DOT QLD and they said you can only go with what's on the placard and not in the manual (which someone was saying the 17 inch allows for the 265/65/17 which is a 30.56 (776.3mm) diameter.

In my case being an SR=205/16s which is 28.91 (734.4mm)

So am I right saying that I could only go 265/70/16s instead of trying to take into account the 265/65/17's in the manual?

Not sure it fits in with "keeping it legal" but what's to stop you finding a sr5 at the wreckers and peeling the tyre placard off and swapping with your sr sticker. The sticker has no model or serial number from memory.
I have a sr with 17 inch alloys and 265-70-17s, think it's illegal by 4mm on the sr but fine if it was an sr5.

Believe you can buy new placards from Toyota, think trying to peel one would tear it.

Searching and reading as for the largest tyre size for a SR, have not been able to find any definitive answer. this being the closest I can find can anyone confirm?

I think there are at least 3 different 'largest tyre sizes' for an SR. largest legal without engineering approval is 31". Largest you can fit without chopping body mounts is 32" with the right offset. Largest you can fit with heavy mods- some are running 35", maybe 37" with SAS?

Gday all. Trying to get my head around all this legality stuff. Is there a way of finding out what the official OEM tyre diameter was? My 2010 SR 4x4 dual cab/chassis has the good old 205/R16C size on the tyre placard. After some digging I've found out that the official profile of 205/R16C tyres is 80-82%. So it's essentially a 205/80/R16 tyre or a touch larger. Depending on which calculator you use, you get different diameter measurements.

Etyre Store calculator: 708.7mm
Exploroz calculator: 734.4mm
Tyresizecalculator.com: 734mm

My own calculations:
205 x 0.82 = 168.1mm profile
16 x 25.4 = 406.4mm rim diameter
total = 168.1 x 2 + 406.4
= 742.6mm

Then I run into the same problem when comparing to larger sizes. But if i pick a specific brand/model like BFG AT KO2 275/70/16, which BFG publishes as having a diameter of 792mm, I'm just within the 50mm maximum based on my calculations, but not if I use the other calculators.

But a BFG AT KO2 at the 265/75/R16 size (which seems to be very popular with Hilux owners) is clearly too big at 804mm diameter.

Thoughts? Am I safe going with a 275/70?

Thanks

In WA you can go 2 inches bigger - total - that’s either tyres or lift. So you can go bigger profile up to 50mm here if you don’t lift any other way.

Work on 255/70/15 off the SR5, it is very close to the SR’s 205R16. 265/65/17 is the biggest legal size, pretty close to 265/70/16. With this diameter upgrade you really need a rotor diameter upgrade, either the 2012 or the bigger TRD.

You’re allowed 50mm larger wheels (eg 31x10.5/15 or 265/70/16) and that gives 25mm lift, so you can still add 25mm suspension lift too, The ride height can be no more than 50mm above standard.

Hi All,

I hope this is a quick answer. I have a stock 06 SR5 Hilux with standard SR5 rims and have always had 255 or 265/70/15 tyres. There is not much range any more in these sizes and the local tyre mob says that I can look at the BFG KO2 in 31/10.5/15. Based on what info is in the tyre placard re max load per axel the 109 load rated BFG’s would be fine. However another tyre mob say that I need to have 112 load rated tyres minimum as this is what the 255 and 265 tyres are.

Can anyone tell me legalities of this here in Qld as I really do want the BFG’s but don’t want to risk being illegal etc? My local tyre guy says that he fits lots of 31/10.5/15 BFG’s to this model Hilux so I am hoping he is correct.
