Has anyone heard if the laws for tyre sizes have changed yet. Starting to finally look at Getting some wheels and tyres. And if the laws have changed or are about to change going to go bigger.

Hi All

Was in Rockhampton yesterday talking to a Mickey Thompson rep and he said "possibly" by the end of August they will alow a 2 inch suspension lift and a 2 inch tyre lift and body blocks would be no longer allowed.(So get them mod plated now!!). I m not sure if it was 2 inch lift on tires (4 inch increase ) or just 2 inch increase on rolling diameter (most likely). I asked him how he knew of this and he replyed alot of the tyre manufactures don't make the tyre sizes allowed on vehicles and were losing business so they have been pressuring to get the rules changed. I hope this is the case. Not just another story to get your hopes up!!!!

I put 265/70 15 (diameter 753 mm) on my 2007 SR5 as these gave me a 14mm increase over standard 255/70 15 (diameter 739 mm). They are Bridgestone 694, the trouble is it is an odd size and needed to be ordered in.

Yeah this is totally crap. I want Cooper ST Maxxs 265/70R17 for my 2012 SR5, but am not willing to risk becoming un insured because of it. My insurance company said the same thing. Dont care what you do as long as its legal. I rang the Department of transport the other day and they said 15mm, and nothing about the possible law change. However I did speak to Ryan at Fourbys in brissy and he said the same thing, That there could possibly be a change to 50mm OD in a month or so. I hope so badly.

just to add ive been through 3 vehicle inspections in the past 2 weeks all in very different places, warrick, mt gravvat and enogera and ask about tyre legalities and there response was no larger than a 31" tyre. i run 265,70,15's and never have problems, all ways get waved out of the inspections even had one cop give me advice.

not sure if this is right either but i read in here somewhere that depending on what diff you have in your vehicle you can go larger tyres, say a jeep came standard with 32" tyres if you swapped the diff over you could legaly run 33's. correct me if im wrong or dont quite have the full story

Correct, but has to be engineered approved/mod plated

I spose with a mod plate you might get away with it. But everywhere I've asked and I did did the info on the transport website no bigger then 15mm in overall diameter then what's on your tyre place card.

speaking to a transport modification guy on the phone he says that on the 1st of November the new rulings come in and he belives they include a 50mm increase in OD. (after multiple calls i finally got directed to this guy n he seemed like the only person in queensland transport and the tyre industry to whom i have spoken to have a idea as to what he was talkn about. so that was nice!) i will be rechecking sometime after the 1st to be sure.

now to just find non s"+t looking tyres that are load rated speed rated and size compliant any clues? im lookn at 16" rims

oh sweet. did he say anything about the height of the vehicle suspension and body lift wise? or just the increse in tyre size?

i didnt really ask about suspension but he did mention that some changes wouldnt be made to suit other states such as 100 mm lifts (well im pretty sure he said 100mm anyway ) "Because thats too extreme" lol
so im not completly sure of what other changes there is goin to be, though when they take effect i intend to find out.
i hope the changes they do make are documented with decent details and somewhere easily accessable. because this current crap doesnt even refer to 4x4's (that was even stated to me by another TMR guy i talked to)

I've got the 2012 Sr5 and it is fitted with 17 inch rims and the factory tyres measure 30.5" diameter, the 05-11 models with the 15 inch rims measure 29" everything is pretty much identical except for larger brakes i believe. so should be able to go to a 32" tyre with these

Doesn't matter what precious models were fitted with as the law stands now its 15mm OD bigger and that's it. I for one sure hope they change it to the 50mm cause I'm busting to put those copper at maxxs on my truck

I've heard from a mate that they (transport) are saying 50mm increase 1st November. He spoke with local tyre shop who is usually in the loop and they said people have been saying that for years. I'd say wait till november 1st, and call transport yourself. if they confirm it, get them to send you some literature on the topic (for proof) and go for it. I'm like you mate, hope that this goes through, but in the mean time, it gives me time to wear out these crappy HT duelers.

Yep yep, well no one wanted to trade the crap HT Tyres in when it was new so yeah ill wear them out I guess. For 11000km on them now

Found a page on Facebook tonight called Queensland Vehicle NCOP e petition tonight, asked them the question and this was the response.

Queensland Vehicle NCOP E-Petition - Hi Adam, no this is absolutely correct, NCOP will be introduced in Qld on 1 Nov '12 and will run in parallel with current Qld legislation for 6 months, then the old QCOP will eventually be retired around 1 May '13. So MC category vehicles (offroad 4wd) will be allowed to have 50mm tire increase, but this is only 1 inch increased height (the other 1 inch is on top of tire and doesn't increase overall vehicle height). The main concern is 4wd organisations were consulted during NCOP development, but absolutely no changes nor recommendations were incorporated into the final revisions of NCOP, so they're just not listening to us. Our petition aims to put pressure on government legislation fighting for greater freedom in modifications for offroad 4wd vehicle owners than what the NCOP currently provides, therefore we urge all Qld residents to get on board with the petition and also help spread the word. Now is the time for our voices to be heard!
