I still find the biggest question is the difference between sr, sr5 and trd. some people will say make = toyota, model = hilux, variant = sr/sr5/trd/workmate etc.

This is the thing that we need to figure out for all states...is a variant different to a model

It's all on toyota's website; check out this pdf- http://www.toyota.com.au/TWR/content/static/74844.pdf
Page 3 shows the differences between the models. So this shows how each model has to be treated indivually when working out legal tyre sizes. You should also note that the offsets are different for the different size rims. The TRD isn't listed any more as production has stopped on that model, but anybody with a TRD can supply the specs from their own tyre placard.

Brendan,
I think you will find that both the VSI and the Regulations state that it is the largest size available on that model. This means all Hilux... So TRD is the basis from my understanding. This is good info, as it means that 31" is legal on an SR5 and a SR. If based on Tyre placard of the SR5/SR alone, it would be about 19mm larger then an SR5...

Happy to quote the Regs/VSI when I have time.

Off the NSW RTA guide on tyres VSI 9
If the wheels are listed on your car’s tyre placard or in the owners handbook then the tyres you fit must be those listed on the placard or in the handbook for these wheels.

In NSW it is the tyres on your placard as stated above not other models the RTA are black and white on this
So you are only allowed 15mm diameter increase to keep it "Legal" unless you get a enginering Cert done.

when ive been through this process for other cars (not 4x4s) its always been measured against the biggest wheel/tyre combo available for that model range (ie: SR/SR5). ie: on a street car if you have the small steelies but a alloy larger wheel was available the engineer was always happy to measure against the largest available option so in this case it would be the alloy sr5 (currently 17") that said perhaps they have become more strict in recent years as i havent done it in many years and generally only on sports cars.

ive fitted 225/75/16 to my 2011 sr and am really happy with them. only a squeak over the 205r16 but heaps more tyre choice.

I've just ordered a new SR X/Cab 4x4 pickup, expecting it in March or April.

I ordered it with an ARB Deluxe winch bar to suit flares, and am planning on ordering some Utemart flares closer to the arrival date of the ute. I don't want it to look like a wannabe SR5, so I was thinking the 55mm flares would help set it apart.

Obviously with the standard wheels and tyres it will look absurd, and I will want to immediately put something taller and wider under it. A 2" lift is also on the cards in order to make sure I can fit something respectable.

With regard to engineering these mods, do I need to contact the engineer first to make sure that they will sign them off? I saw someone mentioning that the engineer needs to look over the car once the mods are completed to OK them. Has anyone here been knocked back by an engineer after they modified their utes, after first being told that the planned modifications would be OK?

*edit*

also, I would want to be fitting wheels/tyres to fill out those flares, so there would be a pretty significant change to the offset. Does anyone here have any experience with having this kind of thing engineered?

Mate as it stands now you dont have to get a 2inch lift engineered although I believe it is supposed to be installed by a licensed mechanic. Wheels and tyres are pretty complexed but most people are running a 265 you can get away with that ATM. Engineers certificates are around the $900 mark, so if I were you Id start searching on here and look at threads like this; viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3765&hilit=tyre+bible

I have a 2010 sr I put ARB flares on it, although Matt at Monster Rides has some huge flares now that look the part. Im running 16x8 rims with a -1 offset no probs although Im also running 285s now but havnt and wouldnt bother getting them engineered.

Lads,
The NSW Regs (Legislation) just changed and NSW has emailed (to the the VSCCS Engingeers) its intent to comply with VSB14. This means that 4WDs (Please read the NCOP in VSB14 for yourselves) can run 50mm lift, 50mm track increase and 50mm tyre rolling diameter increase with self certification. ie Nil ENgineering report required.

Now... WHo has the TRD offsets and tyre sizes in 2009? Just put 285/75-16 on and it "may" be legal under the new regs... if TRD has larger rolling diameter than SR5.

Good news finally.

I read the argument above. Many cars havent ever had a tyre placard... and even if they do, a 255/70-15 isnt the same DIameter as another 255/70-15. So, it isnt an exact science as far as Im concerned. I reckon that pulling off the tyre placard will confuse the crap out of anybody checking your car anyway. Its only a sticker after all!

For all intents and purposes, the SR, SR5 and TRD are the same vehicles with a few little changes but mainly a strapped on supercharger and some yuppy creature comforts for SR5 and TRD. SO, why would the tyre sizes have differnt rules. That just sounds like illogical public servant bullshit to me that wont stand up to legal nor engineering logic.

Hi,
This is my first post in over 12 months, I find this site to be an absolute gem in information, and everytime I go to do some custom work on the Lux, someone else has already posted some great info - Great stuff.
Sadly, however, I seem to have lost an argument with a NSW RMS (Formely RTA) Team Leader who has emailed me advice stating that whilst NSW is considering adopting 'parts' of the NCOP VSB14, that "currently there is no legislation to cover its use".
This is despite the fact that I argued that Harry Vertsonis and Dan Leavy of the NSW RTA were involved in
approving this code of practice.
This sucks as now I have purchased 245/70/16's for the LUX this weekend.
PS. If anyone can assist me in some detailed instructions on how to attach a PDF document to a post, I am more than happy to attach the email from Mark McIntyre - NSW RMS along with my arguments.
I am considering taking this with issue up with the minister, but was wondering if I should burst into print with a tirade of abuse in an email stating the fact that reps of NSW RTA have approved a document he can't seem to implement, or is it best to maybe organise a petition.
At least with VSB14, SR 4x4 owners like me can go 50mm larger in Dia and a track width increase of 50mm rather than the limp wristed 15mm OD and 25mm overall track width.

wow, it took awhile, but i finally got to the end of the thread. however I'm still confused  .
i would like to replace the cheese cutter standard 205's on my SR with something legal, so what are the options, without having to go the trouble of an engineers cert?

I am with you Rusty.... I pick up my SR next week with the stock 205s and I want to fit 265/70/16s as I have two half worn tyres from my Navara which I would like to fit up as spares. These tyres were on my standard Navara STR rims and I can't see how they wouldn't be suitable on the Lux. Similar power, wheel base etc etc etc. Any thoughts anyone?

if you want to keep the standard steel wheels you can use 215/85/16, a perfect fit.

I was looking at replacing the standard rims too, so I could get a set of 245's on. A few people have said it would be no issue as long as I kept it registered, but I don't wanna be up the creek with no insurance ( in a worst case scenario).

Has anyone heard if the RTA has adopted the new laws yet (regarding this issue) ??

Nah, they haven't changed the laws yet.
I was a bit disappointed at the time, but since posting in December, I can say that the Bridgestone Dueller D694 245/70/R16 LT Light Trucks have been great and have exceeded my expectations.
We hauled a camper trailer from Sydney toTweed and back again in early January and packed up just when the big wet come.
During the 10 day dry spell when we were there, the tyres perfromed OK off road, had plenty of grip, and the Speedo was spot on when compared with the Digoptions GPS and I can't fault it.
When driving back in the wet pulling the camper trailer (weight 1200kg) with electric brakes, we had the windscreen wipers on the whole time from tweed to Sydney and the tyres were great.
Still a bit disappointed that I didn't get larger tyres, but I figure if I want to get a larger lift down the track, I will get the lift and proposed larger tyres engineered at the same time.
For me, its a bit like 'baby steps'. A bit at a time.
I have been off roading for 25 years on and off (first truck an FJ40) and at the end of the day it depends on the driver in off road situations and knowing his capabilities. A a good tradesman doesn't blame his tools.
Good luck

Hi Red,
Sounds just like what I'm after, no issues with speedo and good all round capability. Did you end up fitting flares, or does it all work nicely under the standard arches?

No I had to fit flares. I got aftermarket ones from Utemart for about $300 or so. It takes about an afternoon to fit, the trickiest bit is the rubbers, They are fiddly. But looks good when installed.
Cheers

I've been reading these threads with great interest....... and it's been doing my head in!!
From what I have gathered, in short......
An increase in diameter by 50mm is allowable
An increase in track by 50mm is allowable
Speed rating for four wheel drive vehicles must be N (140km/h) or greater
Load rating of both tyres combined must exceed the maximum load rating of the axle they are on (my SR has "additional" tyre information that states 1300kg for the front axle)

So my 31 x 10.5 R15 Cooper S/T with load and speed ratings of 109Q respectively are perfectly fine as they are 36mm over the original diameter, rated at 160km/h (which it will never get close to seeing), load rated at 109 which makes each tyre capable of carrying 1030 kg. Thoughts?

Has anyone weighed each corner of their 'lux with full bar work, dual batteries, winch etc??

Lee.

I think the max increase in track to an IFS is 25 over all not 50mm? Just adding my bit to the confusion

It got confusing there for a while!
I didn't read that part. So now I have a track of 1580mm, which is 70mm more than the SR and 40 more than the SR5.
I have 15 x 7 King wheels. So where does the responsibility of the retailer come into it? I know they were adamant they wouldn't sell me a 15 x 8 for reasons I can't remember.

Put flares on your SRs boys and dont worry your selves about it ,no one else has for the last 20years on there 4bys
Police only look for tyres outside the gaurds, how many 4bys are running around with bushranger rubber flares or less that come out with 195s on them from factory but now run 265s+ tyres and so long as they are covered with some sort of flare police usual dont even second glance at them.

why are you chasing the definitive legal requirement anyway? fear of no insurance payout?, Defect?
