Curiosity more than anything. I'm not overly worried about it at all, but the possibility of the insurance shit fight that may or may not happen does sit at the back of my mind.

Police only look for tyres outside the gaurds, how many 4bys are running around with bushranger rubber flares or less that come out with 195s on them from factory but now run 265s+ tyres and so long as they are covered with some sort of flare police usual dont even second glance at them.

Guys,

I clarified all this with Mark McIntyre who is the Team Leader of Technical Enquires and Audits for Vehicle Standards and Compliance with the NSW RMS (Formerly RTA).
Basically for us tight arses with SR's instead of SR5's, we need an Engineers Certificate if we want to go anything over 15mm in outside diameter of the tyre, or 26mm wider in width across the rim over anything which is noted on the tyre placard which was placed by the vehicle manufacturer (ie Toyota). You can't legally bung on a TRD or SR5 placard without an engineers certificate, in which case, you may as well chuck on 33's and get them certified.
The reason some of us are anal about this (each to their own!) is for two reasons.
1. The fear of God of not being insured if some sticky fingered insurance company manages to prove that the cause of an accident is that you could not brake in time beacuse you had illegal wheels and tyres. I would personally prefer to pay an engineer for certification anyway. The risk is not really worth it. Maybe if we pooled resources together we could get an engineer to discount common tyre increases. Really, how hard would this be?????

2. Some of us, who get screwed by governments for even trying to make a buck from our own businesses, quite often need to lease our fourbys through our businesses because we don't have the funds to pay outright for them. Even though the Lux is an awsome off road weapon when tricked up, they are actually quite useful at work as well. As a result, some Lease Finance providers (not all!) may have a bit of fine print which prevents modifications taking place (engineered or not), whilst others require an engineers report whilst others don't care.
The Solution - Lobby Mark at RMS on 02 8837 0081 or send an email to NSW Minister Duncan Gay expressing your disgust or both?

Man , this stuff does my head in. I'm in same lux boat. needing replacement 's for OE tyres.
Went to tyresandmore silverwater, Peter suggested 245/70r16's on 16x7 rims (yokohama a/t) would be 15mm over standard tyre diameter which worked out to be 1mm under legal o/s for SR.
It's the very least that Toyota should have put on in the first place as minimum!!,so I guess that's the way I'll go . Much as I'd like to go bigger ,it creates more headaches than it.s worth.
Anybody have thoughts on best brand sunraysia type steelies?

Correct... Standard Offset is +30, so a +18 will give (30-18=)12*2=24mm, which is just under an inch.

Shouldnt the offset work off the sr rim.16 inch 45+ ,therefore max offset 32.5 ?

4.2.11 Off-Road and Goods Vehicle Wheel Track
The wheel track of off-road four wheel drive vehicles and goods vehicles (MC, NA, NB ADR
category) must not be increased by more than 50mm beyond the maximum specified by the
vehicle manufacturer for the particular model.
If a solid axle from another manufacturer is used, the wheel track may be increased by 50mm
beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that particular axle, provided all
other requirements such as clearances and the tyres do not protruding outside of the vehicle

4.2.10 Maximum Tyre and Rim Widths for Off-Road Passenger and Goods Vehicles

Tyres fitted to off-road passenger and goods vehicles must not be more than 50% wider than
vehicle manufacturer’s widest optional tyre.
The rim width must not exceed the recommendations for the tyre fitted.

Standard tyre size for Hilux(es)

Postby darbio on Mon, 09 Feb 2015 2:02 +0000

Hi all,

Is there any resource which will tell you the standard tyre size for a Hilux given it's year and type? I know you can look at the tyre placard on teh vehicle, and add on 15mm (for NSW and QLD).

I've got some 32" tyres and looking to see what year Hilux I can legally put them on in NSW.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

D

NSW Legal or not?

Postby mickms on Mon, 10 Aug 2015 5:26 +0000

Stock 14 SR 4x4.
225/70/17
On a 17x6 inch rim.

Looking at either cooper stt.
Or BFG Mud.

Now as per vehicle standards information guidelines revision 4:
Offset must not be increased by 25 mm from stock.
I can legally increase rim diameter to 7.5" x 17.

Now what is confusing is
Wheels up to 26 mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the manufacturer ? Meaning what ?
The outside DIA must not be more than 15 mm over the largest tire and wheel combination specified for the vehicle? Meaning what ?

It's doing my head in do I really need to get it engineered if I go to at 245 x 70 x 17 or am I legal or not thanks guys

Are you in a position to be hassled by the fuzz a lot?! I think ya stressing over small details. Many many many people run bigger tyre and rim sets than that with no dramas. If it all looks proportionate then ya won't have any dramas. Just my experience tho.

Just got off the phone with Rta, and they don't give a crap. They guy was a total nob.

So fitting 245's and going 7.5 wide requires a certificate of compliance at approx $450. Fantastic thanks Toyota for the drama.

I have 265/65/17 on 17x7.5 rims with flares. 2011 sr
That's how I brought the car and I'm sure that's how it was ordered from Toyota

Once they wear out and I upgrade suspension I'll look at it all to change maybe
