29" and 30" tyre. Question thread????

Hi Guys, first post for me....great forum by the way!

Quick brief, I ordered a new SR Silver Dual Cab TD today. I was told I should see it late feb/early march?
Through the dealer I have it booked in to see ARB, getting a Deluxe b/bar, rear step t/bar, flares and canopy.

Now for my question, I am trading my new stock tyres and rims in for steel black 16x7 rims and 255/70/16 ST Coopers. Would you consider this the right tyre for this type of rim and on a vehicle of standard height? The tyre guy told me this was the safest tyre combination for my vehicle, though he did seem a little unsure. I am just after the widest and best looking tyre combination I can safely get away with.

Cheers.

I think the SR has 205/70/16 as standard so that will mean that the new tyres will be a larger dia.ie 27"std as compared to 30"for the new ones so when your speedo says you are doing 100kph ( if it is correct in the first place) you are actually doing 110kph. Thats way over. The 255 will be ok on the 7"rim as the SR5 has 255/70/ on a 15x7" rim.

Moved to tyres and wheels forum.
Welcome Alphamax to the forum. :) :)
I was going to lock your topic as we have plenty of general tyre asking questions on this forum (so the search engine returns cleaner results) and direct you to the quick reference thread finder and ask you to use the Which tyre next thread at the bottom to ask you question.
Here is the thread finder.
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4434
But I had an idea  we seem to have a lack of any useful threads for sub 31 inch tyres so with your permission I would like to change the topic title to "29" and 30" tyre discussion thread" or something similar??? And add it to the quick reference thread finder above? We can then direct questions by members enquiring about similar size tyres to this thread.
Also once you have the wheel combo sorted out we would like to hear how you went by adding your experience to this thread.
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3765&start=40
Unfortunately most members on here have fitted 31" or larger tyres so we miss the valuable info for fitting close to stock tyre sizes. And would like to put in in one place.
Good luck mate.
Im sure some members on here will twist your arm and say go the 31's. :) :) :)
Cheers

Thanks heaps..for a newbie like me this is basic but good info. If I go this way I will have to learn to factor in the speed difference with the larger dia. tyres. I was not real keen on going to far away from stock for such reasons, still hope it will serve its purpose and hope it does not look poxy. Any idea what the approx. total height of my vehicle with these tyres/wheels would be, I am also getting a high roof ARB canopy? Hope it does not cause me to much of a problem with limited carpark entry heights.

Thanks for the welcome. I have no problem with you changing the topic title. You guys have a great forum structure with quality info supplied.
I have not committed to the tyres as yet, so am still undecided. What I am looking for is a compromise, as the vehicle will be used mainly as a work horse on the bitumen. Though, I do more than the occasional trip into the Vic high country, not for the purpose of 4wd driving, more so just to be able to get in and out safely while doing my hunting.

The SR comes with 205 R16's which can be rephrased as 205/80 R16 or 29".

The speedo is 10% under with stock tyres and fitting 31" tyres (eg. on an SR5 rim) brings this up to being almost spot on (2-3% under which is a good safety margin.

the st is at the very top of my list for all round best tyre for road and play. the km2 is looking very tasty thou in that size 8-) . been taking alot of notice of what looks like daily driver 4bys and there is a lot of st around. i dont really want a noisy tread pattern for a work truck so the st will still be my pick.

Congratulations Alphamax.
You made the Tyre bible status.... :) :)
The topic title has been edited and its been linked to the QRTF.
Obviously it's your thread and you have rights to it as you are the first poster.
For all the hardened Hilux owners...
I need some details of stock rubber and tyre sizes that are fitted to the hilux and anything that is close to 29 and 30 inch tyre sizes. In 16 " and 15" rims...
Cheers
Mark :) :)

I will be picking up my SR D4D next wk (my first HIlux - I have been converted....) and in the same process as Alphamax in trying to sort out tyres for it.

I will not initially be replacing the rims and am looking at putting on either Bridgestone 694's or BF Goodridge ATs in 245/70/16 size. I mostly use the vehicle for work with the occasional off road jaunt on the w'end, so I want a tyre that will work well in both situations.

i originally went for the cooper st's in 30/9.5/15 to avoid the oversize issue. On the cooper brochure called 30inch but i think overall mm was 2mm more than legal, was close enough for me. After losing lugs and heaps of chipping (only 15000km)then to and fro (warranty) with coopers they covered 60% of new price for stt's in 30/9.5/15 and I'm happy with them. Overall mm were more though I think.

G'day all
I hope I've chosen the correct thread to ask this question, so here we go:

It's time to upgrade my wheels and tyres due to tyre wear on the stock splits its running on now. This has come up a little earlier than planned; as I was hoping to have a lift installed (really like the look of the REKON kit :D) however funds don't stretch that far yet. After the lift I'd planned to run 16 x 8 Dick Cepek DC-2's with -12 offset wearing 265/75 - 16's, and I'm concerned these might have rubbing issues.

Now after much research both here and elsewhere I'm pretty much sold on the DC-2's fitted with Goodyear Wrangler MTR LT245/75R16's. My question is in our forum's wealth of experience can any of you forsee any issue fitting this combo onto a 'Lux ute with stock suspension. This link has been very helpful in my research, and might help others: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

My intention would be fit the lift (2"-3") later and then next tyre change move up to the 265's. Any thoughts or comments will be much appreciated.

Cheers NQ Robbo

from what i have read in this forum you shouldn't have any problems with the 31" tyres. Although the tyres might stick outside the guards due to the negative offset of the rims and generally the police dont like that.

You will be perfectly fine with 245/75x16 tyres on stock suspension.

I'm looking at putting 245/75 x16 on a new hilux but I'm worried the gearing would be out and i would loose performance. The tyres are about 30.5 inch, what do people think?

If it is a new Hilux with the 17" wheels, the 265/65x17 wheels equate to about a 30.5 so you should be ok.

Just don't think the 16" rim will go over the new hilux front disc or calliper

I didn't know that was a problem with 16 inch wheels, knew it was with 15's. They are 16 inch on the new SR that i get in March.

No worries mate I was talking SR5 I ran 31/10.5x15 on my rig for about 12 months and had worries performance wise and it actually put the speed back to almost correct.

You should be ok at that size 245/75x16

Hi Guys

I have a 2013 SR5 hilux dual cab. I want to fit some new tyres soon, im considering cooper AT/3's. Can i go any larger than standard without a suspension lift i.e. 31's or should i stick to the standard size? Tyres are currently 265/65/17

265/65 r17 tyres are close to 31". I think they are 30 1/2 inch anyway.

265 is tread width in mm
65 is the profile in percentage (ie: 65% of 265)
17 is the diameter of the rim in inches where the bead of the tyre sits

30.5708 inches

Check what 17" sizes are available in the Coopers. Used to be nothing smaller than 265/70/17, which can work with a bit of care, but may require some compromises.

I have 245/70/17 KM2s which are around the same diameter as 265/65/17 and are plenty meaty enough for my use.
