Thanks

Luis let us know how it all goes with the new tyres and rims, Im looking at doing the same to 2012 SR dual cab.
I have been geting told all different things from different tyre mobs, hard tro get a straight answer.

Ok gang I am looking at getting a set of Method Race Wheels the Standard in a 17 x 8.5 with 0 offset. Will be either swapping over my 265/70 17 KM2's or just buy new tyres and sell the SR5 OEM wheels and tyres. Going by Diego's awesome calculator the new package will stick out by 40mm. Probably stuff all but would anyone have a pic of this size combo and will the 265/70 17 KM2 be ok on the 8.5 considering the OEM is 7.5? Cheers.

After searching the web and NewHilux forum all night checking out pics & info the 265/70 will definately fit the 8.5inch rim. But I don't think I am happy with that much sticking out so have decided a +20 offset will be perfect if available.. Now just waiting on a reply....

Hey mate, i run 265/70 16 on 16x8 10p on a 2012 sr dual cab with utemart flares no problems anywhere, if your going to run 16x7 with 245s your rims will more than likely be an offset of 30p (alloys) they will stick out past your gaurds. sunraysia rims will be 20p this means they will stick out further than 30p, hope this helps you out.

The 16x8 10p are a roh Terain, any of your tyre shops should be able to get them. I paid $250.00 a rim

I have an opportunity to buy some 33's for my hilux, i am finally upgrading from my highway tyres. The only thing is as these are second hand they come with some 16x8 steelies which are apparently +40 offset.

Anyone have any idea how i may go i was trying to work it out using the calculators etc.

Hi All, sorry if this post is in the wrong spot but I’ve searched everywhere & can’t find an answer.
I have a 2013 sr5 with standard sr5 alloys and 265/65/17 Bridgestone ht tyres as from factory ( just done 80,000kms) . If I put on 265/70/17 tyres on will it change the vehicle much, as I use the hilux for towing? Ie road speed and hill climbing?
Thanks Jeff.

Ok, simple calculated size is 265*.7 (70% of the tyre width is the height of the tyre) then add twice that to the rim diameter and then you have overall diameter of the tyre on the rim. To check what the difference is just do the same calculated figure for the standard tyre and bingo you have the difference in rolling diameter. If it's only a little bit you should be ok. Just remember the 70 series tyre will end up slightly bigger giving you an almost accurate speed (standard tyre is slightly lower than actual speed) hence the 70 series will give a more accurate spedo reading. Manual or automatic don't tow in top gear especially with the taller tyre.

As this is only a simple calculated figure I'm sure someone will correct me but if you check the calculated size for the standard size and compare it with the measurement of the tyre on the vehicle it will be close (minus of course the fact that the tyre is worn giving a reduction in actual calculated size) Just get a tape measure and measure from the road surface to the top of the tyre. ;)

My calculations show standard size is 30.56" diameter and 70 series is 31.56" so just 1" taller diameter. Now if you want to calculate the circumference of each tyre it is 3.141 multiplied by diameter. This gives a difference of103.2% larger for the 70 series. Therefore your spedo will be more accurate because the standard tyres give Speedo around 97% of true speed.

Oh before the 'experts' jump in.... I did say SIMPLE calculated size. I just measured my 265*70 standard tyres with 58ks on them and got 750mm or 29.52" so the calculated size is reasonably accurate if you add around 1/2" tyre wear!

And also remember the 265 is millimetres so you must convert to inches! 265mm and the rim is 17" just to confuse us all

Just to help here is the calculator on previous post. (I did my calculations the old way and this calculator validates my calculations)

Gipsy pretty much nailed it for you in tyre size.

Whilst the bigger tyres will get you closer to correct on the speedo, your brakes will be about 3-5% less effective and you'll probably find (assuming it is a diesel) it suffers a bit torque wise compared to how it was with the standard size tyres. You probably won't notice it much unloaded but towing up over 2 tonnes you will probably feel it a little. Your economy may drop off a fraction too, but if you are heavy towing it won't be real flash anyway! Is it a manual or auto?

Thanks all for your replies.
Hk, it’s an auto & im currently towing a 2200kg caravan. Towing in 3rd gear (4speed auto) I’m averaging around 16 -18 l/100km depending on terrain, worst was going from Adelaide to Port Augusta on 47 degree day with 40 kph head wind , down to between 80-90kph & 24.9 l/100km. I’m thinking about slightly higher profile tyres & also getting a lock up (& possibly a Nomad valve body), so was wondering if the change from 65 to 70 profile tyres would make much difference .
Cheers Jeff

Those are pretty awful box compared to the 5spd auto, I hope you have an aux cooler towing anything with it. If not get one as you need it. My guess is it'll lose torque going up a tyre size. Talk to Wholesale autos about what they reckon with the taller tyres and towing.

I have a Nomad valve body and lock up in my 2011, but it has a 5spd A750F auto. The Nomad valve body is good but I never use the lockup, although my 2011 probably has twice the average torque you'd be getting out of a diesel.

Here's a tyre calculator that I use to compare metric and imperial tyre sizes.
Simply put details of each tyre where required, then click on "Calculate".....the differences are displayed.

Hope it helps others.

Hey All

I was wondering what size tyres fit the standard Hilux rim pictured below? A 17x7.5 rim.

According to this site, https://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/tyre-size-for-rim-size-width-calculator, the maximum is a 235 width, but I thought they came with 265 from factory?

265 will be fine, I ran 265/70R17 on Prado rims (17x7.5) before I switched to 33's.
TRD Hilux used 255/65R17 on that size rim from factory.

Begs the question why is the calculator so far off of what is used. Other calcualtors produce the same result...

DIfferent standards I guess. I always look at manufactures specs if they are available as tyre sizes differ between brands anyway.

I usually go by the rim width recommendation on the tyre website, rather than the other way around.
