Just fitted a set of Nexan MT 235/85/17’s
Very happy so far, they balanced up and drive well
Just did Auckland to Taupo and back in the wet over the weekend towing a trailer and stuck to the slick roads well
Still to try them off road
Will update once I’ve had them for a while ;)
If your not prepared to stand behind our Troops
Then try standing in front of them

On the last km's of my curret set:

Factory 17" allow, 265/65R16 BFG KO. Did ~110.000 km's on them and have about 5.5 mm left (start out at 13mm I believe)


Next set will be steek Dotz Dakar ET20 (opposed to stock ET30) with a slightly more narrow tyre.
245/70R16 BFG KO2.

I'd rather go a tad bigger but I needed clearance all around for the option of snowchains. Rubbing with snow chains gives a mess ;)

WEAR, PERFORMANCE ON and OFF ROAD
Too early to tell yet. Just new on today for the A/T's.
The M/T's have done approx 5000k's and most of that tarmac driving. Haven't given the Hilux a wheel alignment yet as been waiting for it the new suspension to settle down a bit. M/T's aren't showing too much edge wear.

Gday all. I just want to confirm, please. I have a 2010 SR 4x4 with a 2" lift, No flares. I want to put 16x7 wheels on (I think I need a +30 offset?) and 245/75/16 tyres. Will that fit inside the wheel arches? Will I have any scrubbing issues?

You'll need flares with those tyres. Most likely will rub on chassis, swaybar top arm and mudflap areas.
Choose a better wheel offset. Factory they're +30.
Go less (smaller number) for a wider track, or more (higher number) for narrower track - but more likely to create rubbing issues.

I'll agree with Cambo - and I'll disagree with Cambo :)

Depending on tyre make, +30 16x7 with 245/75/16 shouldn't rub anywhere but they will hang out of an unflared SR guard.

245/75 on 16x7inch rims is a pretty sensible and workable combination. I have 245/70/17, which are near enough to the same diameter as 245/75/16, on 7.5/17 +30, and they don't come close to anything.

Hmm. Thanks guys. Looks like it's back to the drawing board...

I've seen plenty of non-flared SRs around with 245s, so it must be doable. Might need to go a for a wander around the shopping centre car park without looking too dodgy.

Yep I had 245 70 16 on prado 16x7 p15(?) steel rim for a couple of years. They were legal enough to not bother the authorities.

I thought I'd do an update on my tyres just for info. I've been running a set of Falken Wildpeak M/T 285/70 r17 and Falken Wildpeak AT3W 265/65 r17 since this post in 2017. (I'll rotate the images shortly)

From my log book, I've done about 25,000kms on the muds and 15,000kms on the AT3Ws.

The muds have mainly been used for trips. Every Xmas we head to Bright in Vic and come home via the Davies Plain/Mt Pinnabar area of the Vic alps. The muds have probably been up there 5 or 6 times. Those who dont know it, the trails are marked hard but I've seen numerous people towing trailers using late model 4wd on stock tyres etc (note Vic Parks don't want people taking trailers up there - some people however can't read the very clear signs or their self importance makes them exempt from and park directions).

I bought these tyres for our Canning Stock Route trip in 2018. Before the trip I thought muds were overkill but i bought them cheap so I was happy with that. By the time we started this trip, these tyres had been to the alps 3 times, so they weren't new.

The trip basically went from Cbr to Alice Springs - Tanami - CSR - Gunbarrel Hwy - Uluru - Simpson - Innamincka - Cbr... about 13,000kms all up (used 13ltrs/100kms averaged out across the trip).

Having muds on sand is certainly a little bit of a disadvantage as we were travelling with a Disco3 on BFG KO3s (265/65r18) and it was slightly better on the dunes. But I wouldn't have noticed if it was just me. On the CSR the tyres were happy at 15psi across all terrains, sometimes down to 12psi on the softer sand. We had torrential rain for a bit and at this point the muds showed their advantage over the BFGs in the conditions that followed.

At Innamincka I took these photos of the tyres. The BFGs were bought new for the trip. The Disco3 was about 500kgs heavier and used about 16ltrs/100kms averaged out over the 13,000kms. It is however a much more comfortable car to drive and had no mechanical issues.

What does everyone think of the Bridgestone D697s?
I know they are an A/T, but how off-road aggressive are they really? Do they tend to close to a H/T tyre?

To be honest, I dont notice tyre noise and it wouldnt be fair if I said they are quieter than other tyres I've run as I can't remember. Main thing I notice is how safe the car feels to drive with them on.

I just fitted another set of 265/65/17 Toyo ATII. $250 a tyre. Got 60,000km out of the old set, fronts probably had 5000km left in them but rears were shot. It rained hard the day before and I took my car float to get a rego inspection, it was wheel spinning and kicking out sideways at 90km/h like the tyres were soap. They were just legal. I even had trouble getting out my street and up the hill. New Toyos no worries. Mine has always worn out rears a lot quicker than fronts, very hard to take off in a right or left turn and accelerate up to traffic speed without leaving some rubber.

That lead foot and supercharger playing havoc with those rear tyres there HK1837?

Not quite. The Eaton supercharger brings on bulk torque just off-idle, plus the torque multiplication of the converter. Coupled with the crisp shifts of the Nomad valve body. The worst wheel spin comes on the 1st to second shift. No different to having an old 351C Falcon or 350 SBC Holden, very hard to take off quickly in one of those when turning into traffic. If you are driving a diesel one they barely have the power and torque to accelerate let alone leave rubber! This thing has over 500Nm at the back wheels from just off idle up to the rev limiter, peaking at 600Nm.

Try it on a wet road uphill with a supercharged petrol engine, LSD and soap for tyres! After a week of dry and then overnight light rain I struggle getting up the hill at the top of my street. It’s hell to pay if the auto decides to change up a gear whist you are trying to balance moving forward against the arse end going sideways.
