Fitting 33'' tyre thread.

Postby Marshwa on Sat, 02 May 2009 10:56 +0000

Ok i got my front suspension in, went the wizard kit so i should be running a 3 - 3.5 inch lift up the front and 2 inch bigger leafs in the rear. I bought my rims the other day and got some dynamic sunnies with a "0" offset.

Now i gotta wait a a week or so for my rear shocks and my tires i'll either go Mickey t's MTZ's or ATZ 4 rib in size 285/75x16. Now while i'm waiting id like to set up the front so its ready for the fittment of the tires aand the wheel allignment and be pretty smack on ready to go straight after (i no they all may vary in level of trim a little bit).

So i was just wondering who out there is running these tires with around a 3 inch lift, and if possible can u show me where you have trimmed and what i need to touch up/remove most preferably with pics. I think alot of people will be keen to see this too (pics say 1000 words). Front flaps are already gone so don't worry bout mentioning them haha.

Cheers in advance, Max

Marshwa, are you runing 8" rims or 7"? Might be too late now you have the rims, but I would have thought the biggest issue with your tyres was hitting the UCA at the front on full lock. But the Wizard has fixed this for you. :D :D

Might be too late now you got the rims, but I think you might have got away with a lesser offset. Maybe around +10 or possibly +18 which would centre the tyre in the wheel arch better and result in less trimming. (But I am just an Amateur on this offset stuff, so see what Max says.)

This is based on my 265/75 R16's (32's) on 7" +20 rims that went on on Friday. Your 285's are 20mm wider (10mm each side of the rim) and I think the Wizard UCA's would let your tyre clear the UCA on my rims, but if you are running 8" rims you might need a bit less posiitve offest. Some pics on my buildup I put up over the weekend.

Yeah Rod is right in this aspect....the zero offset is perfect to run 285's on a 16x8 inch rim with factory UCA's.

aftermarket UCA's will allow less offset and yuo probably wouldnt end up doing much more than removing the mud flap with +10 , +15 type of rim. Its the benefit of the UCA's.

One of the members here has the wizard kit with the UCA's on facotry offset +30mm 17x7.5 prado rims and equivalent 285/70x17 (33x11.5x17) and he rubs only on full lock I beleive on the UCA's...a +20 would alleviate this.

if you got rims now, it dont mattet, you still got the benefit the UCA's will give you with droop and alignment. The benefit with alignment I beleive is you can slightly move the alignment forwards a tad more, moving it a little from the bodymount.

when its all fitted up, turn the wheel full lock one way and full lock the other and measure what clearance you get between the UCA and the edge of the tyre...... This will tell you what the "ideal" offset would be for your setup.

Im sure the tyre shop you got the wheels from would be happy to swap them over for a more suitable offset....like buying shoes..."I took them home and realised I need a size bigger"....target would replace them on the spot, best analogy I can come up with at the moment.

Rod & Max,

Yeh i;ve already bought my rims, the main reason i went the 16's is i couldn't fit 15's with 33x12.5 so 16 was i bit of a step up, and i no this might sound childish but i didn't like the rim to tire ratio in going a 17 or 18 inch rims, makes the tire look small and out of proportion to me haha. And yeh they are 8" wide sorry.

i no a + 10 offset would have done me perfect but it was so so so hard to deal with the tire mobs around Rocky when trying to get just a 0 offset that a +10 that would actually take some looking into was pretty well out of the question. As for the +20 it it was just as much of a struggle, places didn't seem to understand to consept of a positive offset or the purpose or fitting steal rims to anything other then a patrol (absolutly no joke about that, hilux had them star struck, not one person i talk to had ever seen or heard of a new model hilux with steel rims or tires bigger the 265's). I don't think its too much of a burden tho as the 0 offset should give the lux a bit more of a wider stance and make it that little bit more stable.

Drew,

I saw how u trimmed ur body mount but u also went the 305's with a -12 offset, running a 0 offset and only 285's do u really think that'd be nessacary?

Max and Rod did you guys go to that extent with your trimming? Also noticed quinny is running 285's if he'd like to jump in here haha.

Marshwa, in the end I went with 32's and no trimming. I could have had the 285/75's but Ryano really steered me toward the 32's and when I saw the two sizes side by side, I went with his advice as he runs a comp truck so knows the ins and outs of tyre sizes etc. Also Brooksy who builds and runs comp trucks also told me a couple of weeks ago he had gone back to 32's on his daily driver.

I think Max and Quinny have done a bit of trimming. Check Quinny's buildup as I think he might have had some pics. I don't think the 285's will need a body mount trim

Marshwa,

Heres my trimming pics and some detailed explanations as to what I did.

First of all the pics-
Image

A is the pinchweld....I tapped that back about halfway just to get the sharp edghe out of the way as under full compression there was a chance of it hitting the tyre. Before tapping that back, I got a box cutter and sliced the inner guard liner the length of the line at A on the outer side of the pinchweld and mounted it fuirther back with a self taper going through the pinchweld on the inner side before tapping it back.

B is the inner side of the flare that I trimmed as much as I "reasonably" could to help clear the tyre under compression.

C is where I used Black Toyota Threebond Sealant to help seal the gaps that were there to stop crap building up in there.

D is the bottom corner at the rear of the guard where I put 2 or 3 slices into the actual quarter panel and folded it up and inwards towards the rear giving more clearance and a smooth edge. Also cut a little piece off the bottom corner of the flare at an angle.

Next pic is what I did with the splash guards below the ARB bar....
Image

I took them off and bent it up almost 2 inches shorter and then pinned the inner guard liner to it....wasnt easy to attach the guard liner to it as it was a bit further forward than the guard liner curves to.

On the other side, passenger side, I dont have a pic of it here but I did the same thing but had 2 split the bent up bit in two because of the washer jet bottles location, so the inner half I bent up not as much as the oputer half. Hope that makes sense.

I will be relocating the washer bottle at some stage.

The tyres dont hit the body mount, but saying that yesterday I did clip it off road when landing hard after launching out of a deep rut with a tree root running across the top of it.

Hope that helps.

Mate thats brilliant cheers for the time u put into explaining it all.

One thing i'm not sre about, is i've only got the stock bullbar on the lux and will be runing it for a while untill the funds gather together, or someone decides to import the sun winch bar haha. You reackin there will be any dramas with this and the tire, because it hangs a bit lower in the front of the wheel arch then the arb bars.

Thanks again for the pics and explanation,

Cheers

Just thought i'd dig this up n ask a relevent Q? or 2 considering that RodW 's Bodylift kit is due soon!
Alot of ppl like myself are running a 2" suspension liftkit so :

1: With a further 2" of bodylift can you fit 33's "comfortably" lol trimmed as above? or less? :)
2: would the front need a little more ie; level with rear? (Strut Spacer maybe?)
3: What do you think would be the widest tyre in ~ 33" R16 that you could run in this combo with standard UCA's?

PPL please Don't bother posting with ADR's or crap, as long as it's all in proportion n clean looking then it's all good by me! :D
Besides i'm the Safest Dangerous Driver i know!!!!!!

Yes, you will be find with a 2" suspension lift and a 2" bodylift with running 33's......you may concern with 33" tyres is the bodymount at the rear of the front guards, thats the limiting factor. The bodylift will raise the guard work higher meaning you will have less to trim, I wouldnt say no trimming at all but you may have some.

Tyre width is dependant on how much you want the tyre to stick out....I'd say the widest would be 12.5" but that will need a bodymount trim and will be very close to your UCA.

Have a look in the bodylift Bible and you will find the following truck -
Image

Image

he is running a 60mm bodylift and a 40mm suspension lift with 305/60x18 KM2's......its very close to what your asking!

i think u'll find that u'll still need to trim the body mount, a body lift only lifts the cab and the mount remains the same position it was and it is the mount thats really the limiting factor as to the width and height of the tire ur going. I'd say u'd still be pushing it trying to fit a 285/75x16 tire with a 2 and 2 and minimum trimming. just cab the mounts back takes 5 mins i'll post up a step by step a bit later on of everything i did just as an expansion on max's.

Mine has started hitting the bodymount now the fronts has setlled in a little. Just full lock with a bit of speed in/out of driveways. Hasn't hit the body anywhere yet but, so you might get away with nothing more needed then just removing the mudflap. (2" Body, 3" Susp, 33x12.5 on 17x9 -12mm offset)

Twisty, do you have any pics of your front tyre fully stuffed inside the front guard....just as a reference......?
Im interested to see how much clearance you have between the tyre and the body/inner guard (not the mount).

and your tyres even thou they state 12.5 on the tyre are only 11.9 wide going by the MT spec sheet...that little bit makes a difference when your practically pushing the limits of clearance.....you'll find Twisty, it is your wheel offset not the tyre width that is causing you rubbing.

Like I said previously, My tyres are the same section width even thou they state they are only a 285 on the side....and they "just" clear the mount on full stuff, occassionaly "just" touching it thou very rarely.....if I had another 12mm wider rim offset as you do I would be clipping it alot more.

I beleive Twisty, you could get away with a 305/70x17 (34"x12'ish) if you aggressively trimmed that mount! Now that would be nice and suit the 5 " of lift beautifully.

Personally having seen Daves truck I reckon the stance with the 33s is spot on, once it settles it will only look better.

Having not seen the mounta nd where Daves is hitting I cant comment on his, but the TRD one I was looking at the the other day, the body mount would be a piece of pi$$ to mod and done properly I dont see any legal reason why you couldnt. Mine on the 98 had to be modifed for the sas and there were no dramas from the DOT on it.

Cheers for the quick response.

I saw that pic Maxx, nice stance but a bit wider than i'm looking for  all in proportion is my mod moto!
i knew there would still be some trimming & a 285/75 is the limit to i want to run anyway, can always go a 255/85 for similar dia. but better clearance(not buy new rims save $)....all depends on offset i suppose, i run 16x7"+25mm offset Rims with no dramas or any fouling/rubbage with my 265/75's n can just about get away with no flares at all( only the sidewall protrudes), don't know if the 285's would work with my rims, hence the 255 option which in a m/t pattern would look meatier than 265 a/t's....
