fitting 33 inch (newbie)

Postby loay24 on Fri, 03 Jul 2020 8:38 +0000

I am very new to these things and yes i know there are already other pages talking about fitting 33 inch tyres but it's too difficult for me to understand.

So in a basic explanation could somebobdy explain to me:

I am getting a 3 inch lift soon to my 2013 hilux sr5 and after i want to change my tyres ( they are the stock toyota tires)

I would like to get 33 inches and a decent offset rim ( i barely know what offset means ) what is the best size tyres and wheels for my situation ?

thanks !!!

In short, the more negative the offset, the more the tyres and taken away from the body and the more positive the offset, the more they fit under the guard.

For 16” rims when fitting a 33” tyre is a 285/75 and you will need 16x8 wheels. Offset would need to be 0 or +10. Anything more negative than 0 and your starting to need to get some really big flares. 0 offset with standard flare still poke out a bit.

For 17” wheels, you will probably be looking at a 285/70 but someone would need to confirm that.
All the gear, With no idea

Many would advise a newbie to stick with a 2" lift and go for 32" tyres 265/75/16 or 265/70/17 on P30 rims.
Will save a stack of issues, headaches, cash and broken components

Go with p10 if you have to run 33s (285 75 16 or 285 70 17). You will need to adjust your LCAs all the way forward and maybe remove your mudflap. You may need an aftermarket UCA to get your steering geometry back to spec.

I'd avoid chopping the body mount as it has an important purpose during an accident. Watch some recent crash test videos, particularly where the front wheel ends up in an offset crash if you dont believe me.

Just be aware your car will be unroadworthy and therefore uninsured.
I might be wrong.

You also need to be aware your brakes will be less effective unless upgraded, and you will lose power, more noticeable in diesel models, you will need to change diff gears to fix that.

This is mainly why people work up to larger tyres, rather than start out with them.

Very true and very sensible, except that P20 or even P25 would be my choice for a whisker more clearance :)

I have a 2015 N70 with a 2" lift and fitted 285/75's, only problem is scrubbing on the back of the wheel flares and sometimes the body mount.

You can either fix it but adding a body lift kit, which isn't exactly legal, but depending on what state you're in 33's and a 2 inch lift already isn't.

You could also do a body mount chop and modify or buy new wheel flares. Body mount chops aren't exactly legal either though.

Your fuel economy will take a bit of a hit with 33's, so if you want them solely because it looks cooler I probably wouldn't recommend them.
