I'm am just about ready to upgrade the stock tyres on the lux.

I have decided on going to a 31" tyre for a bit more clearance off road and it shouldn't mess with the speedo or fuel consumption too much.

As you all know, SR5's have 15" rims. Catch is tyres for these rims need to have a load rating of 112.

In my research so far, all the 31's i have found are only load rated to 109. Apparently, to fit tyres under the specified load rating for a vehicle is illegal and can lead to a defect from the RTA or can void insurance in an accident.

So, Has anybody found or running 31" tyres on 15" rims with the correct load rating?
Should i be worried and just do it anyway?
Or do i just need to spend the extra and upgrade to 16" rims?

hay mate, just went down this road yesterday, stock tyres load rating is 112/110s, s being the speed rating [180k/h] if you look on your tyre plackard in the drivers door jam it dose not say anything about load rated tyres. what is states is tyres fitted to an axle must exced the max load rate for that axle, ie 1600kg rear axle, 109 tyres are rated at about 1030kg each so two of these tyres will carry the 1600kg easy. the speed rating is diffirent, most 31" tyres are 109Q [160k/h] this is to low for the sr5, we need a S [180k/h] sooo any tyre with a 109s rating is fine. bfg a/t are 109s in 31x10.5x15. so after all my reserch, many phone calls to poeple in the know, insurance compenies etc, i cruise down the tyre shop to order my new hoops, bfg a/t, and the dude there tells me that my new tyres far exceed the requirements for my sr5. so if your tyre bloke won't sell you a 109s tyre for your sr5 ask him to show you where on the vehicle it says anything about 'must be 112 load tyre' ...

If you read the placcard carefully and reference the legislation in your state, you can probably get away with 109Q tyres. Look at axle loads, not ratings. There is a rider on the placcard that says if you put on S rated tyres you can increase the axle weight on the front.

eg. In Qld the maximum speed rating for an off road vehicle tyre is 140 km/hr, so mine are legal.

Bit late to the thread but just thought I'd add, although the tyre placard only mentions the tyres requiring to be S rated and "the sum of the tyres fitted to any axle group of this vehicle shall not be less than the relevant load shown above " (1600kg rear axle)

It does however note to check the owners manual for additional information - which states that tyres fitted on the 15" alloy should have no less than a 112 load rating.
