Max size tyres for 2011 hilux no suspension lift

Postby MarkNelson172 on Tue, 29 Oct 2019 4:42 +0000

Hey guys,

I bought a 2011 Dual cab Hilux (Tray back) last week and im looking to get some new rims / tyres.

The car has no suspension lift so im wondering what the biggest tyres with what rims/offset i can go without having to get a suspension lift or a body mount chop. Prefferably All terrains if that help.

Thanks in advance guys

Because of the way IFS works, unless you limit the travel with longer bump stops or fit a body lift, then whatever size fits at 2"or 3"of lift, will also fit with no lift.

Your limiting factor will be the guards around the rear wheel, otherwise you can follow the same advice as those that have fitted 32's or 33's, because the same things apply regarding offset and clearance work regardless of lift height.

Your best best is to find someone with the size you want and see if they'll let you trial fit their spare.

It depends on what 2011 you have. Dual cab diesel SR5 appeared in 2011 with 17" rims and 265/65/17. The rest stuck with 15" rims and 255/70/15 or 16" on most SR. The 17" wheeled cars have bigger rotors and the maximum tyre size is bigger due to the bigger diameter standard tyre. The largest legal tyre size on the smaller braked 2011 is 265/65/17 or the equivalent in 16".

When I upgraded my 2011 SR5 to 17" and 265/65/17 I used 30P 17x7.5 and these work with no rubbing anywhere on a standard height SR5. It is the standard tyre and rim on pre 2016 with original fitment 17" wheels so it should. A friend had the same car as mine and got talked into 16" which were less backspace, not sure exactly but somewhere between 20P and 10P and I think 265/70/16 tyres. They scrubbed on turning on the standard car no lift.

Word of warning though, if yours is the small brake car and you fit larger tyres your brakes suffer. I killed mine pretty quickly, and had to upgrade to larger rotors and calipers.

Search for the thread on fitting 32" tyres.

Pages of info and feed back there. :)

Cheers guys.

So would 265/70R16's fit ? I think there are around 30-31 inches

Sorry, my previous car was a patrol (Ive finally left the dark side) which had no issue with fitting larger tyres and ive only owned this for a couple of weeks.

On the right offset rims yes. They are basically the same size as 265/65/17.

SR5 flares or not?

I can guarantee you that 17x7.5” 30P with 275/75/17 don’t rub on an SR5. You can find these on 2011 diesel SR5 dual cab or 2012-15 SR5 dual cab. Plus 120 ‘cruiser Grande, or Speedy make them as repros called Grande, in silver, black or shadow chrome.

But be prepared to lose braking performance a bit. Best bet is to upgrade front rotors and calipers to at least the 319mm 2012-15 type. Or spend the same on 338mm 2008-9 TRD size, new calipers are cheap for these now and means you don’t have to buy old ‘120 Series calipers and rebuild them. Not sure if you can buy calipers for 2012-15 new, or if you have to grab used ones and rebuild.

I have seen a few non-flared SR's with 17x7.5 30P and 265/65/17. They do fit but they are just starting to go outside the guard. The tread sits level with or just inside the guard. I doubt they'd scrub or be any different to SR5 as an SR5 has the same guards, just the added flare. Note that when Toyota fitted the wider rims to SR they did add SR5 flares.
