finding smaller but higher tyres and suitable rims

Need something to get you rolling?

finding smaller but higher tyres and suitable rims

Postby xychix on Thu, 29 Aug 2019 2:25 +0000

I'm running BFG KO 265/65R17 (30.5") on my Hilus (2015 2.5 D-4D DoubleCab, europe spec).
These alloys are 17X7.5 with an et +35 I believe. (factory)

Now my tyres don't rub at all (factory springs / shocks, bit worn out)
On full steering I've got less than 1 cm to the front mudflaps
On full compression the side of the tyre is less than 1cm from the uppercontrol arm.

Now here we go:
As I'm planning a trip up to the north cape I wan't to be able to run chains *(preferrably on 4 tyres but on the rear for sure) while offroading (read: full compression and steering)

Therefore the idea sprouted to go slightly smaller tyres on a steel rim with an ET +20

For example 245/70r17 (30.5") on a 17x7 ET20 CB106.1 6*139.7 rim *(if i could find them....)
After a small lift (~2inch max) I might even get away with 255/70r17 (31.1"), a tad higher but still 1cm smaller than currently

Giving me 1 cm (or 0.5cm with the 245) extra clearance on both sides + the 15mm I gain on my ET change and I should then have 2+ cm's to fit in my chains.

1. any calculation mistakes or other thoughts on this?
2. does anyone know a vehicle that runs steel "17x7 ET20 CB106.1 6*139.7" rims that I could obtain?
- FJCruiser is on my list, as they are rare here in europe I'm unlikely to find one that has to get rid of steel rims. (likely ET +15)

Suitble alternative might be to go for 16"

16x7 ET20 CB106.1 6*139.7

https://tiresize.com/tires/BFGoodrich/A ... TA-KO2.htm
The 16" choice with proper load rating seems limited.

265/70R16 ( 30.6") same width and hight, so al the gain to upper control arm to be gotten from ET change
265/75R16 ( 31.6") same width and taller
235/85r16 ( 31.7" ) smaller and taller

Biggest issue is, rubbing with an additional 1cm of steel chain is going to brake stuff ;)

one other option crossed my mind: installing 20mm spacers all around.

Does anyone know what the stud length on the default setup is? (if it's over 20mm from the hub face I'd have to grind down the studs.... which I'd rather prevent)

Or I might got for spacers (only 20mm) that use the original wheelstuds replaces by longer ones... does anyone know hot much space there is to mount studs (65mm instead of original 45mm) with the hub still on the axle?

16" might be your way forward. Did toyota sell the 90 series Prado/landcruiser where you are? That might be an economical option if fit over your brakes, which they should.

As for spacers, there are these style that bolt to the hub and have their own studs:

I might be wrong.

Would heavy springs and new shocks do the trick? New rims and tyres would cost almost the same!
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

yes thats also on the way. But it's not the hight I'm fighting against but the tyre sidewall to the uppercontrol arm (with snowchains on). Don't see how that would change with new springs and shocks. (enlighten me though, would leave more money for beer)

I'm planning to go from 265 wide tyres to 245 (same height 30,5"), that alone might so the trick but love to have another 1~2 cm's of space on the inside.

Getting there. Found suitable ET20 rims (17")

Now the tyre to fit on the wheel: (goss-modular-black 6x139.7 CB 106.1 7x17 20ET)

After fitting a a2inch lift i could likely run this:
BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 RWL 265/70 R17 31,6
Might rub on mudflaps due to thee ET...

or stick with the original
BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 RWL 245/70 R17 30.5
and be able to still run snow chains on all wheels....

You do know that what you are doing is probably not street legal in EU? It depends on the rims, because the certificate for the rims (hope you have it) tells you the tyre options.

I wouldn't be running BFG T/A KO2 in the serious snow conditions without chains as a backup. If you are trying without chains, then your best bet is dedicated snow tyre.

You're only a cm off hitting the mudguard behind the front wheel? I've only got stock height suspension in mine, and i'm running 31x10.5" KO2's and I rekon I'd have more clearance than that...

“On full steering I've got less than 1 cm to the front mudflaps
On full compression the side of the tyre is less than 1cm from the uppercontrol arm.”

If I understand this correctly your fighting a loosing battle here.

If you space the tire out (either with spacers or different rims) your going to then loose the mud flap clearance as by going outwards the tire effectively moves further forward and backwards when you turn the tires from lock to lock.

You might need to look into the total geometry of the front axle.
Suspension, rims and tires, Upper Control Arms. And that in turn gets very very expensive. You need to find someone local that can take you through the whole setup and comply with everything your wanting and local regulations. And not a hot shot salesman wanting a commission.

Might I recommend talking to someone like Arctic Trucks they are all over Europe.
Worth some contact at the very least.
Would love one of their rigs they just are not in Australia and there mods are not all that legal for here.

245/70/17 is a very good fit on 7.5 x 17.

Adequate clearance for chains will require reducing the offset by 15/20mm minimum depending on the actual, as distinct from nominal, cross section width of the tyres used. The tightest point at the front for chains will be between the inner sidewall and the suspension upright. If they are close to the mud flaps, simply avoid using full lock. Highly desirable to be able to use chains on the front as well as the rear.

At the rear the handbrake cables might be an issue.
