Stoney...32's with standard suspension

Need something to get you rolling?

Postby Mick.H. on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 5:34 +0000

Stoney, just wondering how you got on with the 32’s with standard suspension. I currently have BFG 245/70/16 on my SR but on my next set would like to go taller and was thinking the 235/85/16 BFG A/T or Goodyear MTR. Did they end up fitting without a suspension lift? I have an ARB bullbar do you think that would help with the clearance for the front end?

Thanks

Mick

G'Day Mike,

Sorry I haven't really progressed with the tyres as yet.

I have been on the look out for information on forums and I still have not been able to draw a conclusion, I have heard that they will fit and that they won't fit. It is confusing I spoke to Nick Mannell, Mannell Motors, and his hilux runs 32's with the Old Man Emu lift.

I think the clearance at the front is not the issue, apparently the tyre hits the chassis rail at the back of the wheel arch.

I have been trying to save money for suspension, I think I maybe onto a good deal through Danlux's mate at my4X4.com.au he quoted me new springs, I think Ultimate springs but I can confirm that tomorrow and Dobinsons shocks for $1000 plus fitting. I have been hearing some good things about Dobinsons gear

It would cost $1K for 4 new 235's

Mick

If you work it out pass on the information, I am starting to feel that 31's sound like the right size.

before I got the lift and 33's 8-) I was told that 31's are a nice fit, that was from a wheel and tyre company that had fitted them to another Hilux.

I spoke to Mannell Motors today and they said that the biggest tyre that you could fit without a lift would be a 245/75/16 which is basically a 31" tyre. Maybe that will be the go. Now to decide whether to stick with the BFG AT's or try some thing different like the Goodyear MTR's...

Mick,

You could also look at 265/70/16, they are a little bit bigger and very close to 31's.

If you have got the time go to the 4WD Service Centre at Taren Point they sell Mickey Thompsons, they look impressive I don't know anything about the price though.

Let us know what you get.

My current 245's stick slightly out from the guards so I don't really want to go any wider without putting flares on. I was just hoping for a taller tyre. I'll keep looking into it.

Mick,

When you spoke to Mannell's did they say anything about using a bigger tyre after doing a suspension lift?

Stoney,

They said that the bigger tyres should be fine after a lift, by bigger we were talking taller like the 235/85/16. I didn't talk to them about wider tyres but I wouldn't really want to go wider than my current 245's without fitting flares.

I have just ordered two 245/75/16 Goodyear MTR's. I don't need the tyres yet but my lux has been leased and I have just bought the car off the lease company and the lease company owed my two tyres as part of the contract. BFG only does the 245/75/16 in the MT not the AT. So I went for the MTR as it is more aggressive than an AT but not quite an MT.

The MTR's seem to be getting a pretty good wrap on some of the other 4x4 forums around... These tyres should fit fine as they are only approx 25mm bigger than the 245/70/16.
