KUN26R SR5 tyre sizes?

Postby Ptydafwl on Sun, 09 Sep 2018 10:01 +0000

Hi all,

My 2005 SR5 has black steel 16's.
I have the original 15" alloy rims and I'm a fan of the BFG all terrain KO2 tyre.
I would like to fit 31x10.5 r15's to the 15" alloys.
Has anyone got photos of this tyre size fitted to their sr5.

Cheers

Your original tyres are 255/70/15 which are 738mm diameter. The absolute biggest you can go is 50mm diameter increase so 788mm and by specs a 31” tyre is 787.4mm so OK.
A 265/65/17 tyre fits these perfectly on 7.5” rims with from memory a 30P offset (same as TRD and 2011-2015). By specs a 265/65/17 is 776.3mm (30.5”) slightly smaller than 31”, but I think Imperial 31” tyres are closer to 30.5” anyway. Just check the offset of the 15x7” SR5 rims. The 31x10 will fit the 7” rims but you’d be better off with 7.5 or 8” if you can. If it was me I’d grab some of the following 17x7.5” 30P rims and fit 265/65/17 tyres:

120 Prado
2011 SR5 diesel 4x4 dual cab.
2012-15 SR5 4x4 dual cab.
Speedy Grande.

Note that to go to this tyre diameter your front rotors won’t last. To fit this size tyre Toyota fitted significantly larger rotors. But it is an easy upgrade, use rotors, calipers and backing plates off either a 2011-15 SR5 with factory 17” rims or go bigger again with 120 Prado calipers (same as TRD). The rims listed above fit both of these rotor/calipers combos.

I’ve got 16x8 ROH Trak2 with +30mm offset and 255/70R16 tyres, 263mm theoretically, which is 30”. My mate runs 235/85R16 BFG KM2 805mm and that’s much the same diameter as 265/75R16 803mm but narrower.

Great clearance but a bit tall geared and I’m not sure of the compliance implications.

Hey mate
Did you end up puting the 31x10.5x15s on the sr5 rims. I am looking at the same size onto mine and just hoping all the clearances are going to be ok, my ute is stock height and i dont want anything rubbing or hitting any rods behind the tyre

Adding to HK1837's comment regarding the brakes: if you upgrade your brakes you won't be able to fit a 15" rim on there. Brake upgrades to the VSC lux size would mean you can only fit some and not all 16" rims. Most 16's won't clear the calipers but some do, albeit with a few mm to spare. Bigger again is the Prado brake upgrade which requires a 17" rim at minimum.

Pre VSC luxes have discs 297mm which would be yours, VSC have 319mm and Prado's have 338mm all with calipers to suit.

If you plan on upgrading your brakes in the future, it might be worthwhile swapping to a 17" rim to cover all bases...

Edit: damn, didn't notice this was a bit of a necropost lol

I have been running 31/10.5r15 tyres since July (BFG KO2) and can advise they are the best tyres I have had. Plenty of grip, speedo is almost 100% accurate and the Lux doesn't slide out anymore. Only negative (and is only a small one) is the stopping distance on the OEM brakes has increased slightly. As long as you factor that in it is worth it. My 06 SR5 is also stock standard and no issues at all with scrubbing.

I just had Hancook 31x10.5R15's fitted to a 2005 KUN26 SR5. Look much better in terms of filling out the tyre wells, particularly at the back, and provide that little bit more clearance without being outrageous. Certainly stopping distance has increased under breaking by a little bit, but also my speedo is nearly perfectly accurate now compared to before with 255/70R15's.

Hey Mate,
what width flares did you get, as utemart sell a few variants?
they look great, did you have to get them resprayed to colour match or the utemart ones pretty good matching?

From memory these were one size bigger than SR5. I think the SR5 were 30mm, I got 40mm. Colour is as supplied, perfect match for me.
I like them and would recommend, just be aware the 3M tape holding them on to the outside of the fender has let go on mine and others. Not so much of an issue for me, but without scrub bars I reckon it could collect some foliage and tear off. When I get around to it I’ll add a nutsert or two at the front and replace the tape with sikaflex.

I've been running BFG KO AT tyres in the size 265/65/17 on my stock Hilux KUN26 2015 for over 75.000 km's now! Got plenty of thread left.

However after adding a winch and bumper front is starting to sag a bit.

Considering a 'tad' of lift (1"? just to get stuff back at normal hight)

Hi ,

I just checked my owners manual and referred to the page noting the OEM tyres and see it listed 205/r16 110/108S and 255/70/15 112/110s for 4wd models. I know there is a lot of conjecture out there regarding the 31/10.5r15 tyres as they are 109 rated, but doesn't this blurb show the absolute minimum load rating for any 4WD model KUN26 Hilux is 108 therefore confirming the 109 31's are ok? I have checked the Qld TMR guidelines and it states that the tyres must meet the minimum load rating for any 4wd variant of that model. Also covered by the axel load blurb that is noted on the tyre placard too if I recall as there is no load rating listed there only the axel load.

I think you have to have a load rating equal to or above the original tyres fitted. If it is an SR5 you have to be above or equal to 112. SR with 16” rims above or equal to 110. AFAIK the second load ratings are for when you have dual rear tyres so not applicable to Hilux.

So with those 31/10.5R15 109’s you cannot fit them to a Hilux, you will most likely void Insurance if the tyres are found to be at fault in an accident.
