Best Mud Tyres ( Post what you'd Recommened )

Hey guys i'm needing to change my shoes for a new set

i recently just had Federal Courgia M/T 285/75R16
and surprisingly got a lot life out of them. Had them for 2 years and done 62,500km
Alot of black top driving which these have handled great!

I'm thinking of going with the same Tyre again but i do like to experiment, i do go offroad alot to and with these federals they have got me everywhere without an issuse

however i am now looking towards Mickey Thompsons they have a large variety of offroad tyres that they say are around 50% on road and 50% offroad. I like the fact of self cleaning tyres also!

My missus just got BF GOODRICH A/T fitting to her Prado soon as it hits mud its bogged lol!
I know for a fact that TOYO and BF GOODRICH M/T are not good for me

Any suggestions would be ideal cheers :)

I can't tell you about the life expectancy yet but I've had a set of hankook mts in 285 on now for a couple of months and so far they have been great. Great offroad grip even when not aired down. The best thing is they would be the best mt I've heard for road noise, there is very little. My previous bighorns in 265 weren't too bad either, a little noisy once they got older and I would have got around 60k out of those if I had of kept them on but I wanted to go to bigger!

Haha here we go, the Ultimate Ford v's Holden thread for a four wheel driver

To be honest I can't see the point in paying the $100-$200 brand name tax to get a brand name tyre, I just don't see the value. On my Hilux I was running the Silverstone Sport 117 in a 285/75/16 (33") and it was an awesome tyre, off road it went everywhere and on road it was certainly way better than my previous Mickey Thompson A/T 4 ribs, plus they are nearly a 34" tyre, so huge.

This time I just put a set of the Fderals on, only done one trip and no complaints so far. Aired down to 10psi and never looked like loosing a bead (no beadlock rims either).
Cheers Rod

I have been around Australia on a set of bfg m/t, cape York, Kimberley, gib river road, tanami desert, etc etc etc and not had one puncture, until something changes its the only tyre I will use.
Changed them out with over 60k on them when well and truly still legal.

I'm with Rocket55.

For what you have described, I'd go with the Silverstone MT 117 Sport (NOT the Extreme)

They have more angle in the directional tread and will clean much better than some other soft directionals on the market.

They are very big for their size, as Rod said.

They will be much quieter and more civilized than the MT 117 Extreme or Centipedes.

The directional thing is not that much of an issue as regards, tyre wear and rotation.

The KO2s are what I run, and they are more civilized than the Silverstones, BUT they are not on your list, and for what you have described, the Silverstones would fill the bill and be noticeably better off road than the BFG KO2s.

Yeah had a set on for about two years or so. The 764 they were, never had a puncher, no dramas at 10psi, road noise wasn't as bad as some but as they aged they got a little louder. I'm with the other guys also, just no point paying premium for the big brands. If you could get double the life I could understand paying double the price but it just doesn't happen!

Yeah thats true all depends on the driver, some tyres gotta be best of both worlds though i must admit when i got the Federals i was thinking least 40,000km till dead but to get around 60,000km im pretty impressed

30 psi is probably why you lost the bead, the tyre wall stands up too much and doesn't protect the rim or bead. 10'psi was on my TJ so a bit lighter than a Hilux, but I ran my Silverstnes regularly at 15psi on my loaded up Hilux, if it was empty I ran 13-14psi on the rear and never had a problem. By comparison, I used to run my Mickey Thompson A/T 4 ribs at 22psi on the same Hilux and got dirt and rocks jammed in the bead all the time.

And don't overlook the fact that the Silverstones have a lower load range than many of the common offerings in that size and this should lead to a more flexible and compliant sidewall, which would also help to keep a snug fit on the bead.

Looking better and better :D

FWIW I have no hesitation going down to 15psi and have done so on various makes and sizes with no problems. I have been down to 15psi in 11.00/20s on a 15 ton 6 x6. If I needed to, I would happily go lower. With care.

I'd recommend ProComp Xtreme MT/2, I have two friends running them at the moment, they air down beautifully, handle most terrains with ease (I don't know how they go in snow), they're built the same way as the X-Terrains I run, so they take a lot of abuse without issue, and from most reports, they are getting quite good lifespans.

I would have suggested X-Terrains, but to be honest they're quite expensive and really hard to find.

EDIT: changed my mind, traction goes to crap when they wear down, no longer recommend them.

Never thought of running lowwer then 30 always felt as if the tyre would run off and i go through clay last thing you want inside your rim haha

Here around Lithgow, Clay mud is everywhere, I regularly go as low as 12psi, I've never gotten anything in the bead, and if you're smooth on the throttle, there's not much risk of breaking the bead, it's only when you 'give it some mumbo' as they used to say that you run the risk of forcing crap into the bead or unseating it.

Thanks for the info mate my feddies are low as on tred so when i do go in the mud i have to give it hell. Ive only unsealed the bead twice, once i stick new tyres on her should be alright maybe i will go lowwer on pressure when out playing seeming theres a few on here saying they run under 15psi im quite impressed seeming neither of you have bead locks :P i was thinking of buying bead locks so i can run them pressures may not need to :)

With bead locks you can run sub 10 no problems and if you run a bias tyre 2-3psi makes them work pretty good. But with regular mud tyres on normal rims you can run 15-18 with absolutely no problems at all and you'll find you'll probably get twice the traction you're currently getting at 30psi, not to mention it will be a sooooo much smoother ride it's not funny.

Yes very true ive always wanted to go lower for the bigger foot print but as said before i honestly didnt know you could go down to 15 without beadlocks. Well since i got dirt in my bead at 30 would of thought the tyre would of just rolled off the rim at 15 haha

Maybe a test day tomorrow whilst i get some wood

Your tyre will love you for it, stops a lot of the chipping as well, also helps to stop ripping tread blocks off, as the tyre deforms and molds to the rocks as opposed to sitting up on top of them and point loading the tyre, which really gives it a hard time. As said before last time out I ran 10 on my TJ (35x12.5x15) and last Xmas I ran 9 on my Patrol on the beach (285/70/17) no beadlocks. Admittedly I was pretty cautious and gently with the steering wheel and throttle running 9psi on the heavy arse Patrol.

Im running Nitto trail grapplers in 285/75/16 best muddies ive ever used they wear well and a quiet on the bitumen. You do have to let them down a long way to get them to bag well on sand though. I ran 12psi last beach trip. Never had one pop a bead though. And there tough as. Ive had a sidewall push flat to the rim over a bit of shale rock backing up a pulling my brothers 4wd out of a gully. I was giving it a gutfull and got no damage.
Had one puncture in 40k kms which was a 4 inch nail through the side of a treadblock. Just had a slow leak and has now been patched.
Id definitely recommend them

I had set of Bighorn 762 33's on my previous lux and 1 set of 245/75/R16 on my Triton.
I'll never look at another tyre in the MT range based on price and quality IMO.

Self Cleaning.
Low Road Noise.
They wear well, on the lux I got 65K (rotations help). On the triton just over 50K before I sold it.

Off road usually down to 22 PSI and they perform well, I was even surprised at the traction I got on sand compared to the AT's my previous lux came with.
