Tyre width on sr hilux 245/70/17

Need something to get you rolling?

Tyre width on sr hilux 245/70/17

Postby Hettar117 on Wed, 31 Aug 2016 4:23 +0000

Hi all, I have a 2015 sr space cab 3.0l TD and I'm looking at putting a new set of tyres on and was
wondering if 245/70/17 it came with (225/70/17) will fit inside the guards with the standard pos 30 offset without installing flares.

Cheers.

The tyre itself is only 10mm wider in on each side if fitted to rims you have now

If you want to make sure drop a plumb bob down the guard and see if there is a 10mm gap

Are you sure 225/70r17?
Sound small for 4wd or do you have 2wd
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

225/70/17 on 17 x 6 was stock on SRs. Skinny crap 6"rims. Offset was P45. 17 x 7.5 toyo rims are P30.

Don't go to 245 unless you increase the rim width. Either find some 17/7.5 toyos or buy some 7/17s aftermarket.

Either way you will find that the non flared SR guards will probably cover the contact patch but not the section width.

On stock 6/17s, the guards will probably cover the section width, but performance will be ordinary at best and fitment to the 6" rims will be illegal

can you go with 265/75's without lifting? or would they be rubbing on the guards under flex?

The Traction Control model SR's came with 225's, the non-traction control models came with 205's.
I have 245's in my SR (non-traction control model) on the stock rims, they'll be fine mate.

Bad idea. I'll break a personal rule and repeat myself - because they can be fitted to 6" rim and inflated does not mean they (245s) will be "fine"

There is a direct performance relationship between rim width and radial tyre size/section width. Too skinny in the rim (as you have) means mushy steering, and generally poor handling. This is why the Tyre and Rim Association says 6.5" minimum for 245 section width.
A fitment which does comply with these standards is usually illegal in Aus. I say usually because, although I am not aware of any exceptions, there may be exceptions.

Sure, the wrong fitting won't trigger some cataclysmic problem, but that doesn't mean that it is "fine"

This is not a matter of personal opinion - it's fact. Here's an exercise for you - remove your 245s from your 6" rims. Refit the same tyres to 7" or 7.5" rims and inflate them to the same pressures. Drive around a bit. Push it a bit. If you can't feel the difference, your seat of the pants dyno is malfunctioning. I have done this in the past with other vehicles and .5" increase was detectable, 1" noticeable, and 1.5" a significant improvement.

Particularly in 17" there is a very limited choice in replacement tyres (225/70/17), so if that is the problem, suck it up and change the wheels. The price of four new steelies is chicken shit compared to the benefits.

You get better handling and all round performance and I would guess that the tyres will last longer (I've never kept track)

The free kick is that if plod puts your car through the wringer, an illegal tyre fitment is one less thing to get pinged for. ;)

265/75 R16 fit fine on mine, only place it scrubs is the very bottom of the standard bumper in the corner (I'm still waiting on my bullbar).

Just got to pick the right offset, I got 16x8 +20, seems to be the go for 32's.

Fitting without flares however is a whole other issue...

Haha Luckily in WA they aren't too fussed with this issue as long as you don't let your rego run out and have to go over the pits... that definitely hasn't happened to me before *cough*
