Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has had issues with airing down when on the beach with a 265 fitted to a 9" rim? I have some Kmc wheels that are 17x9 and want to get some 265/70-17 Yokohama geolandar ats but am worried about popping the bead when aired down. Any advice?

Why would you pop the bead?

Because the 265 is stretched out so wide on the 9" that lateral forces may pull more directly at the bead than would be the case with either a fatter tyre or skinnier rim.

9" exceeds some makers max rim width for a 265/70/17.

Why not pick a different tyre size ? 275/65/17 ? Or ?

Seen plenty of people run 265s on 9inch rims without trouble.

Thanks for your input mate...Ive tried a 285/65 on the rim and it slightly sticks out from the guards about 5-10mm, thats why i was considering going the 265. The 285 fill the arch quite well and look good on the rim though.

It is unlikely that you would un bead the tyre, however, several factors can affect that:
On some steel rims, the safety bead (or hump) is quite small, making debeading easier.
I returned a pallet load of name brand steel rims, that after inflating a tyre on to, I could debead just by standing on them, even on tyres I never lubed. (fyi. I tested 10 rims before giving up, including sitting them overnight at max pressure first)
Excessive cornering forces can debead. Try not to make sharp turns when aired down.
Debeading will be easiest for several days after freshly fitting tyres. Once the beads has settled in, and the lube had dissipated, the problem is reduced.

Over streched beads on wide rim widths is not kind to the chafer, the area of the tyre about 5-15mm from the edge of the rim, particularly on lower profile tyres. Applications for warranty could be found against you, if this issue was deemed to be the cause of failure.

Thanks 06xtracab, you obviously work in the tyre game and know your stuff. The 265 Yokohamas can be put on a 9" rim according to there website so providing I don't drive like an idiot I shouldn't have any dramas. It's just good to hear from people who run a 265 on a 9"rim and air down a lot.

I know how you feel, mines the same
My spair was a 31" and I was running 33 when I brought a spair for $1 in eBay (yes $1) with nere new steel rim, I was asked do I really need it, you have a spair, then I got are you going to sell old spair,

What make since to us doesn't alway make sence to others

No, No, fitchy.

Explain to the custodian of the cash that tyres are simply consumables, like fuel and oil.

All you are doing is bringing the purchase forward a little. Also explain that by having two sets, you will be able to use them more efficiently and get a greater total mileage out them than if you simply made do with one set, which will be incorrect for part of your use and will therefore wear quicker.

With any luck, you won't be asked about the necessary second set of rims.

This approach makes so much sense that you can probably convince even yourself.

It seems to have worked for me for years, but I suspect my wife simply didn't care.

It's also helpful if all the sets of wheels aren't together. While such a display looks mighty fine to us, the sight can bring clarity to the keeper of the cash. Clarity is not always helpful to us.

Good Luck :D
