275/70/17's on +10 offset 17 x 8's

Need something to get you rolling?

275/70/17's on +10 offset 17 x 8's

Postby darkside on Mon, 22 Sep 2008 8:51 +0000

Hi Gang,

question is as per title. I have done some searching and plenty of reading but havent come up with anything to confirm the punt I am hoping to take. (other than a brief post by maaaxxxx) Looking to fit some 17 x 8 rims with a +10 offset. Want to basically get the biggest rubber I can on it without rubbing issues. From research on this site I am reasonably decided on the bilstein/kings lift up front (approx 2" apparently..maybe a bit more on the higher "groove" settings) and re set springs at the rear to suit. Understand that the 32" (265/70/17) tyre fitment is well proven but noticed that Coopers (and maybe others) do a 275/70/17. Not quite a 33" but bigger than a 32. Is anybody running this tyre size or I guess 33's (285/70/17) with the bilstein or an equivalent lift? Will be running an AT style tyre and they will be my on and offroad setup as I am not up for shelling out on a play set of wheels/tyres at this point.

Thanks in advance for any feedback. Dont want to go pushing too big on size and cause clearance headaches, but at the same time dont want to go any smaller than I have to.

The 265/70x17 is just under a 32, bout 31.7 or so. the 275 is just over, bout 32.2 inches. depending on tyre brand of course.

the 285 is a 33.

the 285/70x17 will fit your wheel setup but you will need to trim and cut a little, nothing too crzy but it is achievable.

if you do not want to cut, stay with the 275 and at worst you'll need to remove the mudflaps.

anyone else care to chime in to help the bloke out?

I agree with MMAAXX.

You'll fit the 275/70/17's as long as your not afraid to get busy on the front bumper and various plastic trimmings.
Also try to get us much lift as possible up front, as over time it will sag a bit.

Good Luck.

Cheers

Thanks fellas. That gives me a bit of confidence to punt on the 275's. Just dont want to fork out to find that I then need to chuck the newly installed suspension and go even higher.

Re tyre selection, as it is a daily driver I am looking at the all terrain options. The Coopers range seem to be the main ones who do a tyre in the size I am after. Likely to be jut the ATR. Have had a reasonable read of the site an havent read anything too bad. Would ideally like something more aggressive but dont want the road noise.... I must be getting old....:) Any comments?

Re suspension setup, I was seriously tempted by the Wizard stuff but really struggling to justify the extra $$ and the budget is already stretched. The plan was to get as mch as we could out of the Billies/kings combo up front and re set the rear to suit. Any comments on what the max I can expect to squeeze out of it without putting too much stress on th CV's etc? Not planning to run barwork or any additional weight up front. Keen to knwo how far I can encourage my suspension guy to push the height at the front. I like your combo Mmaaxx but hoping to go with something my local guy is a bit amiliar with.

Mmaaxx and 10K, top looking rigs fellas. Love the 18 x 10 option with the 4" lift Matt.

Thanks again for your input. Hoping to do it once and do it right.

Ill admit I dont know too much about the Bilsteins and what you can do with them, regarding how much adjustment they got. If you are not planning on running barwork then your front suspension will have less tendancy to sag as much and as quick as a hilux with barwork and possibly a winch.

aim for atleast 2.5 inch front lift no more than 3 inch. that'll be the normal limit for the CV's, you really dont want to push it further than that.

you may need to trim the bottom edge of the front bumper as 10K mentioned, you may also need to relocate the bottom edge of the inner guard liner, the front bottom edge an inch forward. Easy to do, just remove the screws that are there, push it forward and then re screw through the liner plastic again.

Re: tyres, have you considerd the Dick Cepek FCII's ? They are an aggressive all terain with some sidewall protection. just an idea.

Hey MMaaxx,

thanks for the feedback. I had looked at the Dick Cepeks and got all excited as they seem to really fit the bill, but seems that most manufacturers jump from the 265/70/17 to the 285/70/17. Very feww seem to do the in between size. Have really only seen it in coopers. The only other option I have seen is the Sure Trac (ST) in the Coopers. If I just stick with the 265 I have a much wider choice. Haven't reallyl considered the 285 as I knwo this will be really pushing it with the lift I have in mind.

Thanksfor the guidance re the lift. That was exactly what i was after. Will get him to push for somewhere round the 2.5" mark. And the trimming you have mentioned seems a piece of piss. Much less drastic than the sledgehammering on my old 85 4 runner fitting 33's. :)

Hi Guys,

The last 2 to 3 weeks I have been researching wheels, tyres and suspension upgrades and after reading your posts I have made a decision because the wheels are Prado ones 17/7.5 offset +5 (by Speedy Wheels) and Cooper Sure Trac tyres 275/70r17 and a lift using Bilstiens with king springs, extended shackles and reset springs is my choice but wasn't sure what lift I needed or if the wheels/tyres would fit. Now thanks to everyones info and your comformation that this setup will work I am going to do it.

Thanks Guys.

Nice one Mark. You go first!!!! :)

In all honesty, too late for that. Have ordered the wheels and the suspension....and my car hasnt even arrived yet!! Lol.

Have decided on the Dobinsons springs for the front purely cause a mate can hook me up at the right price and they seem like a decent option along with the kings etc. Will also machine in an extra groove into the billies to be sure I get my 2.5" lift up front. Just not sure at this stage what the right distance beyond the factory grooves is. Thinking in the 5-10mm range as it seems whatever you increase lift on the strut on the strut seems to equal about double that in overall lift. ie 5mm at the strut shoudl give 10mm extra lift over all. I hear the Dobinsons along with the kings are good for somethig in the rage of 40-50mm once settled. So an extra 5-10mm on the strut shoudl see me up in the 60mm lift range.

Much like you Mark, once th efront is sorted I wlll set the rear to suit. Hopefully have it sorted in a few weeks and will post up pics. Fingers crossed it all works.

off topic a little bit but a question for those who have had their billies machined with an extra groove:

Who do you get to machine the extra groove? i have the billies and have wanted to do this for a while but wasnt sure who to get to do it suppose anyone with a metal lathe and good skills yeh? does it affect the strut at all i.e weaken or possibily. the only thing with my situation is i have to fully remove the struts and springs and hopefully leave my car on the hoist get the struts machined and then re-fit.....

cheers kael

Mine will be going into an engineering workshop. Will ensure that the grooves are to the same spec as the ones cut by factory. Cant see that there woudl be any problems with the unit if you are careful to replicate the factory cut ones.

Have ordered them from Tire rack in the US. They are in transit. Should work out at about $300ea AUD delivered to my door. Not the cheapest of rims but in all honesty (being a wanker now) I just liked the look of them and the size and offset seemed to work. They are far from a hardcore off road rim (beadlocks etc.) but neither is the car they are going on.

They were awesome to deal with. Quick to respond to my initial query. Gave me a direct email to one guy there (Adrian) rather than a generic one so I had continuity of dealing with one person. Had a complete price for the wheels shipped to my door emailed to me within 2 days. Wired the money to their account online. (They dont do paypal for international orders) They had the funds in two days and shipped immediately after. Email sent to me with confirmation number and tracking details. Should be here in a week. Shame the aussie dollar has taken a hit as the weaker aussie dollar does pump up the price a bit. Would have been a nicer buy a couple of months ago when it was in the 90us cent range. :)

So hopefully I will have them late this week or early next week. Fingers crossed customs ont take a bite. Am quitely confidents as the value of the wheels isnt that high.

Hey Im trying to sort out wheel / tyre combos myself and am pretty keen on something similar 265 or 275/70/17. Just wondering what is the real story with legalities / insurance issues with a change in tyre size such as this. Also with lift what are you actually allowed to do. (Im in WA)

Some excellent questions there. Not sure I have all the answers, but the link below covrs most of it. My SR5 came with 17in rims fitted as an option so that will be my argument to being able to fit 17's to it. Will have to check what width they are as rule sare that not increase is allowed over a 7" rim. But regardless I dont think the rim itself is a problem although the increase in track from going from a +30 to +10 or zero (potential overal increase of 60mm) offset rim is technically an issue. Although i think if you are inside the guards you wont be likely to draw attention to yourself. Seems like the increased rolling circumference might also be an issue.

Will this be enough for your insurance co to walk away from a claim. Your call really but I would say unlikely.

Well, rims arrived today within 7 days door to door. Very impressed. Were packaged well and no customs issues. have dropped them off for tyre fitment today. Hopefully have them on the car laetr in the week but still waiting on the lift up front.

Can highyly recommend Tire Rack and the Fed Ex transport with tracking, Was very easy to follow the packages progress.
