2wd Hilux Tyre Upsize

Need something to get you rolling?

2wd Hilux Tyre Upsize

Hello,

Currently have a 2008 2WD Workmate rolling on 14" wheels.
Image

I've already ordered and about to fit the SnakeRacing Econo lift kit (50mm). Planning on a set of 15x7 wheels, backspacing 4.00" and 0 offset
Image but the choice of tyre is my concern. With the 50mm lift want to make sure I have a decent sized tyre/wheel combo. Another forum member with a 2wd workmate has pointed me the in the direction of 235/75R15 A/T tyres and seems with the info on gearing, a good combo. I am on a tight budget and would like to get a set of tyres and be done. I am looking at the Kenda Klever 30x9.5x15 A/T
Image to mount on the wheels and I do think they would give me the look I want as well as maintain the overall tyre/wheel height to 29.4" and not need to change gearing out.
My only concern would be the possibility of wheel rub at full left right lock.

Any thoughts out there from the Hilux gurus?

Before you buy your tyres
What do you want out of it?
You relise bigger tyres means less brakes(more distance required)
Have you thought about putting 4wd front guards and tub

Personally
Sell your tub and get a white 4wd sr5 one (they do for about 4-600)
Put some 4wd front guards
Get yourself some 20x9.5 and 20x8.5 front
And fit some 275/30 and 245/35
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Not interested in the big wheel American look to be honest. Getting a replacement tub is not an option due freight charges. I'm basically stuck in this position and trying to make the best of it.

Will be strictly an on road daily driver setup. Only place to off road really is the beach and some gravel roads with pot holes  .

Researched the 5 lug Tacoma, 2012 version can do the larger 31x10.5x15 on a stock suspension thinking the 2wd Hilux should as well. Once my cash is spent it is gone for a while so need some assurance before I make a go of it.

I appreciate the advice though.

235/70r16 or 235/75r15
29" tyre is what idd put on it

Car came std with 25-26" tyres (25.5")

Fitting 31" is pushing it

I don't know what stock is nowadays, but I was in a similar position some years ago. No where near the tyre selection that there is now.

I would not recommend increasing diameter much over stock, If clearance permits, I'd only go up approx. .5" to 1" in overall diameter. Dunno what that would be - maybe 28" ? 29 ?" Much more and you will definitely notice the weaker braking, particularly in a daily driver. There are also regulatory limits to diameter increases

The weaker braking and regulatory issue are also relevant to 4wds but no one seems to care :D

Wheels look good !! :D

Thanks for the input. I think the consensus is the 29" OD wheel/tyre combination you would get from the 235/75r15. Will repost again after installation.

Now onto the brake forum to learn more about stopping upgrades.

Installing the Sanke Racing Econo lift resulted in no worries. It levels out the truck so eliminates the rake in a stock setup. I am about get the wheels aligned since I only had the lift kit installed a few days due shipping time to the Bahamas and wanting to wait out a few days to settle down. The ground clearance with wheels/tyres/lift is appreciably greater and worth it for that alone. But now I need a side step for the Missus who is only 5'4" tall.

Had a real hassle trying to find 5x4.5 wheels for this truck with proper offset. I'm in the US market so having no reliable information except the 5 Lug Tacoma, which is different, resulted in my having to offload those wheels listed originally above and get some loaners (Toyota Windom  ) until I can get the proper Hilux wheels.

I'm still looking for decent 5x4.5 15x7 wheels so if anyone has a link please post it.

Any questions you have I'll be glad to help.

Google search 5x114.3
It's a more common wheel then you think
Just getting the offset you want might be the problem

Thanks for the advice....will try that search now! To stop the brake caliper rubbing I would need a POSITIVE OFFSET correct? This will push the wheel further OUT.

Yes positive , around et40 I think ...
As for other wheels.. you guys have rav4 or Kluger in Bahamas ??. they are same stud pattern..
Try to match up mag centre bore size too (60.1 mm I think). Or use hub centric rings .
Good luck . If you change wheels please post pic!.
Oh what sort of time does it take to install snake econo kit . 1-2 hours?

The snake econo kit took 2 hours to install front and back. I don't have the rake that a non lifted truck has, with the bed sitting noticeably higher than the front on the suspension.

We do have the RAV4 but no Kluger. I am still looking for replacement wheels. I can't justify living with the windom wheels on my Lux. I'll post some new pics to show what I have done further.

Hey bex_,

I know this is thread is a few years old, but do you have any updates to what you've done with the wheel/tyre combo?

I'm in the same situation myself, looking to put in the Snake econo lift kit and fit some bigger wheels/tyres.

I'm stuck at which wheels to use....I tried fitting some older jeep wrangler wheels with an offset of +32 but they caught on the brake caliper (not sure if it it was more the lower offset that made them catch or due to the design of the wheels).

The stock offset was hard to find out as everyone reports something different, but I believe it is +45 - as per https://www.wheel-size.com/ and I measured it myself on the stock wheels.

Falcon wheels used to bolt on to earlier models IIRC. 14' x 6". Offset whatever it was on those wheels. No clearance issues.

If later 15" ford will bolt straight on, that is a very convenient and economical option.
