I have posted about studs snapping of and the wheels coming off a new hilux while driving, i think it was in another thread so yes it has happend. the guy at the local tyre power shop also knew about this when i asked him.. he said over tightening with impact guns stresses the studs. He showed me what they use, but also said most guys don't like doing them by hand cause it takes alot longer..

Hi Guys

First post and thanks for the great info, have been lurking here on the site for a while.

Just picked up a new Dec 2009 Hilux SR two weeks ago and fitted it with CSA Alloys just last week and also noted with interest that the nuts did only do up around 5 ish turns...... the tyre place said it would be fine :o but I'm not convinced...
Does anyone know where I can buy the longer wheel studs as someone has suggested..... would I just go for genuine SR5 studs from Toyota as they are longer..... or is there after market ones that would do?
Just think it might be clever to get this done before I do too much driving.... and no I didnt use a rattle gun but used instead a torque wrench for the final tighten

Any help is appreciated.

hmm i rotate my two sets of rims and nuts with a rattle gun all the time and havent had a problem.. (75k so far touch wood).. but apparently a lot of people have broken studs with rattle guns..

i didnt realise that the SR5 studs are longer than the SR studs ? is that right ?

This is only logical. The steel rims are only around 6mm steel whereas the alloys need to have at least 15-20mm of material to make them strong enough at the mounting surface.

Makes sense that the alloys would need different studs.

Worth finding out if there are two part numbers for hilux studs and anyone who has upgraded an SR to alloy wheels should investigate.

I'm not sure about the difference between the SR and SR5 studs. We just went straight to aftermarket studs from nice- http://www.niceproducts.com.au. You will find though a lot of tyre shops or companies specialising in racing equipment will have longer wheel studs . I think it’s actually a requirement in most forms of motorsport so their fairly common.

Hi all,
Just to let you all know, there is no difference between the SR and SR5 stud length. I got a Sr around home today that we put SR5 wheels on a while ago and thought I better check to see that it was all safe. Took a wheel off the Sr and one Off my SR5 and they measure the same.

This all come's to figure as the SR5 wheel nut also suits an SR style wheel as the SR5 runs a steel spare. This does not work the other way.

PS, as Ultimate said that a nut for motorsport use "must not be enclsoed, and be able to see thread beyond the nut back face"

I had to put longer studs from nice products on the front of my sr5 when I put the dc-1's on because the nuts would only hang on by 2-3 full turns and ther was no way I was going to trust that, but I bought my wheels and then took them home and fitted them so I noticed it but these wheels are pretty popular on our hilux model and I have doubts whether many wheel shops have done the same for these other trucks especially if there putting the wheels on with a rattle gun as they wouldn't be able to count how many turns the nut has done like you can with a wheel brace.

Hi All

I have just fitted 5 mm longer studs on my SR also from Niceproducts also...... 45mm long in total ( original are approx 40mm).
Original studs when the alloys wheels were fitted only did up around 5 turns.... with the replacement studs they now do up around 8 to 9 turns dependednt on torque settings...... much better.
Thanks to Brendan for his help in sourcing these studs..... and a lot cheaper than other sources too.

Does any one know if whether or not tou can still run a steel wheel in conjunction with the longer studs and enclosed nuts, or do the studs bottom out in the enclosed nut before pulling up tight?

I think the nuts will bottom out. Your probably safer just going with an open nut.

Fair call..... I checked my 2007 SR wheel studs today and found that they are about 43mm long. With my ROH RTX alloy rims I have around 10 - 11 turns of thread in the nut when it pulls up tight. I don't think I'll change anything now knowing this. Obviously not all alloys are the same thickness or depth around the stud hole.

You probably wouldn't have. I think the issue was more to do with using alloy rims that are thicker in the centre than either the aftermarket or genuine Toyota steel wheels.

Sure do mate, remove disk and caliper on the fronts and drums on the rears...... then belt the bejesus out of the stud with a (ahem) soft face hammer....... or what you have handy.

Please take it to a workshop or Engineering shop and have it professionally heated up and pressed out. Then get them to install a new one correctly.

Broken studs are a major problem on Toyotas as workshops and tyre retailers insist on using high powered rattle guns and hammer the crap out of the studs.

2005- 4X4 Toyota Hilux wheel nuts must not exceed 105nm or 77lbf ft. Please use a torque wrench.

Just thought Id ask the question here who's busted a wheel stud on their current hilux?

I just did my 65K service on my hilux this afternoon and I service her thoroughly every 5,000km....including rotating the tyres every 5K.

I think this may have contributed to it....on...off...on...off...every 5K. eventually the stud had to give in.

It is only one on the front right hand side...so should be still ok with the other 5 holding it in.

Ill get round to it in due course...might play it safe and replace the whole lot and get new wheel nuts aswell.....

so, who heres done it too?

left front for me mmaaxxy, same here on off with the tread, especially since i run daily rubber and the chubby ones. :) but mate thats got a bridgestone dealership reckons im bruting them up to much so i should start using a softer approach. breaker bar = swing off it and back it off half a turn...........
