265/70 R17 on new SR5?

Postby Bloch on Fri, 03 May 2013 7:10 +0000

Hi Guys,
New to the forum and already excited about the wealth of information available here. I'm about to buy a new SR5 and I'm considering fitting 265/70 R17 rubber. From viewtopic.php?f=27&t=14886 I suspect the tyres will fit ok without scraping the muds etc. Has anyone fitted 265/70 R17's on the standard rim that comes with the SR5? Also, a photo would be greatly appreciated as well :)
Cheers,
Bloch

Hi Block,
I have a 2012 SR5 and fitted BfGoodrich Km2'sthe front left hand one was rub, but only when it turned to the left. I think long time ago. had a 2'' Old Man Emu lift done to it.I hope that would have fixed it but, it did not fix it. Spoke with Duncan from Macquarie 4X4 Centre at Vineyard NSW. it is near Windsor. They had done the lift.
He is very knowledgeable person. we spoke about different things and he told me that some of the cures could create more problems, and they might not also, every 4wd and car for that matter are made to tollerances and mind was in them. when they done the wheel alignment they set it as far as they could to a negative as they could. when on road test the steering was a bit light and it would not hold track. eg you could not steer it using one finger. he explain the science about it, I could tell he knew his stuff from my own learning's about the subject.
if I was not happy he said he would install castor corrector at cost if I wanted to, but he thought I would be wasting my money, it was up to me. $450 supplied and fitted on both sides and including the wheel alignment that they send out of shop for.
I asked him what did he propose that would fixe it then. I still wanted the mud flaps left on, as I took them off and it stopped the rubbing but mud was coming up in between sill and side steps and spraying all over the doors.
Duncan show me where the wheels were rubbing and explain it was only while I was turning and it was on the inside of the of the mud flaps and he could cut a little bit out of the mud flap, just pass the rub point while still keeping the integer of the made flap in tack. It worked a treat and happy as Larry.
I have been going to Macquarie 4X4 Centre now for a while, This is my 4th, 4wd now that they have fitted out and have always got good advice and service. It has always what is best quality and cheapest that would suit my needs, not the most expensive bit of equipment that they could sell me. I live in the Hunter Valley NSW at a place called Cessnock. I have to travel over 2 hours to them. They correct the mistakes on my first 4wd and, from different places, and I have noticed that those shop are not in business any more. I use to live near them when I first found them, and have travelled to see them all the time.
P.s. They also are cheaper than the shop near me. I hope this is a help, sorry for the long reply

Hi Bloch and Dave07,

nice photos Dave07, there is another thread on hear somewhere, about these tyres and rubbing. Some off people had it and some did not, and it was the left one every time.

You are lucky Dave. The gap between your wheel and back guard is a good gap. Mine was only 10 mm when tyres were new. then turn and it rubed, I had done a tyre swap with local dealer and dealer told me about it when I picked the ute up.
I called into dealer today had a look at a few new SR5's, looked at 4 of them, only 1 was close to guard. looks like I got a bad one. Wish they could get them all right.

Thanks Gregwitho.
Still undecided. Considering the Coopers A/T3 LT265/65R17 (same size as stock fitted) just to play it save but I really like the idea of fitting the 265/70R17 as it will give me about 1" free lift compared to the stock fitted tyre.

Hi Bloch
I have just put Fj rims with 265/70/17 tyres they came with (stock).
These rub at full lock and going up driveways etc. Only on the mud guard and only slightly but they rub.
They look good and the speedo is now bang on. Hopefully the rubbing stops when I get my MR suspension as the tyres will be going to 285 or even 305.

Hi DAVE07, When you added the lift did you get more "space" around the wheel? I mean if 265/70R17 is a tight squeeze without lift I assume it's a better fit with e.g. 2" OME lift and it will reduce the risk of the wheel touching the muds. Would that be right?

Hello Rinaldi
Do the FJ rims sit inside the flares with the 265/70-17's. I am looking at a set and wanting to put the Goodyear Wrangler 265/70-17's on them but don't want to do it if they sit outside the flares as I don't want mud/rocks sprayed up the side of the Hilux if I can avoid it. Cheers

Hi Ringer,
They sit pretty close to the edge with sr5 flares however in saying that I just did a trip to Karratha and did a few kays on dirt/gravel roads after it rained and got bugger all dirt sprayed up the sides.
