16x7 or 16x8 Steel Wheels & Offset

Need something to get you rolling?

16x7 or 16x8 Steel Wheels & Offset

Postby Anth D on Tue, 28 Aug 2012 11:24 +0000

G'day all,

I am wanting to throw on a set of BF Goodridge's in LT265/75R16 on my 2008 Hilux.

I will be throwing 16" wheels on, but unsure what the pro's and con's of a 16x7 or 16x8 steel rim are? Assume the wider rim will seee the tyre bag a little less on the sidewall?

I don't want tyre sidewall to protrude past the edge of the SR5 flare if possible and want to keep legal.

What offset should I be looking at as well?

Any help will be much appreciated. I've searched through the forums but haven't come up trumps yet.

there isnt a hugh difference between 7" and 8". The price is a little different but thats about it. Personally i would go 8". Regards to offset, a +20 offset will keep the tyres under the guards and is pretty popular on here.

The 16x7 appears to be a little more suited to my application, is there an issue with going for "too" much offset? Most guys are running +10 offset, what the the pro's/con's with going to a +30 for better clearance and to avoid rubbing? Cheers for your response mate!

the standard sr5 rims are +30 and a 265/75r16 tyre comes close to rubbing on the upper control arm and in some cases guys have found that they do rub. So if I were you I would look at getting between a +10 to +20. These will also give the car a wider stance but still keep the wheels under the guards

I think you might have it backwards, +30 pushes the centre of the rim out from the middle, effectively pulling the rest of the tyre into the guard...

Stock offset is +30, +10 offset would mean that the tyre is pushed out 20mm either side of the Lux and gives the rim a "Deeper Dish" look.

0 offset means that the face of the rim is in the centre of the wheel...

Hope this helps
Aaron

im also assuming that you are getting or already have a lift as they will rub otherwise

Cheers fellas, now that I have decided to go with a 16x7, which offset (+10 or +20) is preferred to minimise rubbing?

Yeah that's right Ben, going with a 3" at front and 2" in rear (Billstein & TD combo).

*BUMP*

Tyres and new wheels were fitted today. Absolutely stoked. Minimal rubbing and will be a great fit once the lift goes in week after next.

Ended up with 16x7 King Wheel steel rims with a P30 offset with a 265/75.

Appreciate all the advice fellas.

Hey mate,

There is a thread already dedicated to a 15x8 with a 0mm offset
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=6221&hilit=15x8

I would be hard in my opinion to fit any other offset. I ran the above rim on my hilux and were great
