Scraping sound when turning

Need something to get you rolling?

Scraping sound when turning

Postby su888 on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 3:11 +0000

When i turn left, i can hear a very faint but noticable scrapping sound - it sounds kinda high pitched.

Thought it would be my tyres hitting something but they appear fine.

I'm rolling on 265/75/16s and have a two inch lift on it.

Any suggestions what it might be from?

Its weird, as its only when turning left... not right and i've had the tyres for over 10,000kms now and its only started now.

Just thought I'd revive this thread to see if anyone has any thoughts on what could be causing this scraping noise. Mine has just started making a slight screaching noise when turning right.

Could be a cv related problem? Have u identified where roughly the noise is coming from?

Have you checked your brake pad wear? The shoes have little metal tabs that will rub on your brake disc when the pads are worn creating a high pitch squeal. When you turn it maybe enough flex to cause the indicator to rub. Mine started squealing constantly due to wear but more noticable on corners.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have just had my rear drums and shoes replaced and the guys checked the front brakes at the same time and they were pretty good. It's a hard noise to pinpoint because its only happens when you turn at speeds above 40kmph or so.

I think it might be like mine was,put it on full lock then check were the plastic meets the outer guard (near mud flap) mine was scrapping there after I fitted the 33s.

Probably not your problem but thought Id mention I had a rather loud noise at 80ks + :? It was the inner guard as wanui mentioned but loose on the front of the car so would push back onto the tyre at speed

I've still got the standard SR skinny rims so I'm pretty confident it's not the guard

ive got the same noise, took me and a few mates ages to figure out what it was, ended up with it on a hoist and found it.

my steering rack makes a bit of a knock when the suspension was compressed or drooping. Car up in the air turning front wheels left to right you could feel the knock coming from the rack.

it still does it im just going to leave it until it gets worse. if it does...

id be keen to know if your noise is the rack to? if you can get you front wheels off the ground to test it.

sorry to bring up an old post but any one has any clue as to why this might happen? mine just started making his noise and its getting louder, from my readings possibilities:
1. Low steering fluid
2. Worn brake components
3.CV joints
4. Mud flaps grinding

Any other thoughts?

Could be the rim rubbing on ur sway bar, mine did this after I installed a 3" lift, need a decent wheel alignment! (Or different wheels)
The other knocking sound u speak of is probably your steering rack, mine did it a few months after lifting the truck, but it hasn't gotten worse in the couple of years it's been lifted, just annoying!!
