What's the widest tyre i can fit on my 2011 SR5 OEM Rims?

Postby Hazeyboy94 on Wed, 30 May 2012 4:06 +0000

I have the standard OEM rims on my 2011 SR5 D/C Hilux and the standard tyres are 265/65/17. I'm about to get some Yoko Geolandar A/T-S tyres but want to go wider. Does anyone know if i can go with 275 or 285/65/17 or even 275 or 285/70/17? I have a 2" TJM lift kit on my Lux. Cheers.

I already looked at those 2 threads and others, but they don't answer my question. All i wanted to know is "what is the biggest tyre size i can fit on a standard OEM 2011 SR5 Hilux rim". Cheers.

As Kyle said mate, it is not the width that is the issue is the overall diameter of the wheel.

285/70 x 17 is a 33 to bigger on a 2" lift, you may get a 275/70 x17 or 32.5" on a 2" lift.

The 7.5" wide rim would fit a 285 at the max

As for legal DFK

Hey Helmut im not sure the 285 would fit on the factory +30 offset? I think it will hit the UCA.

I'm more likely to go with a wider tyre then the overall diameter. A 17" is ample for me. I'll stick with the 65 profile but if a 275/65/17 will fit on the standard rim, i'll probably swing that way. Cheers.

I would be keen to hear if a 285 would fit. If not, i think even a 275 on the standard rim would be good. As long as it's a safe upgrade & legal. Mind you, laws might be abit different between Aussie & NZ.

You need to remember every time you go wider you will get bigger in the rolling diameter of the tyre e.g. 265/65x17 = 31.5" (approx) 275/65x17 = 31.9" (approx) etc etc

Mate are you talking about it fitting on the rim, fitting on the car, or is it legal as these are all different questions which need to be answered together.

Maybe my wording was wrong. I'll try again. I'm looking at the widest tyre i can fit (275, 285 etc) on the standard 2011 Hilux rims, that will fit on my truck with a 2" lift and is road legal. Cheers.

I believe what the equivalent of a 31" is a 275 but not 100% on that and think it will fit in a Tyre diameter equivalent to a 31" Tyre. Again not positive on this, but if you if you got MR UCA's you may get a 285 on....

As helmut already said, the rolling diameter is not only dependent on one parameter. The profile (ie 65) is a proportion of the width (ie 275). Hence a 275/65/17 is a smaller diameter than either of a 285/65/17 or a 275/70/17. Therefore... A 275 will only be a 31" diameter in a given profile.

Anyway, if it helps the original question - I have 265/70/17s (which are about 31.6") on my stock 2011 SR5 rims with a 2" lift and they don't rub whatsoever. In terms of width I have nearly an inch between the inner sidewalk and the upper control arm, so I would think you could go a 275 and maybe a 285 without hitting the UCA. When you deflate you tyres off road however... The sidewall will change shape and possibly rub, I haven't checked the clearance at lower than road pressures.

Legally - I have no idea, but you're not talking about much of an increase in size so I imagine you'll be fine.

Wow, just realized what I said about lower pressures! I don't think that would cause an issue, the sidewall will only push out at the bottom! Lol

Rolling diameter is pretty important. If you wanna stay legal use the tyre calculator. Check your states Dept of Transport rules on max allowable diff {+ and -}. Hope this helps someone. oh and remeber offset if you are pushing the fitment limits.
