32" Tyres on Hilux

Good day all

This topic most probably have been addressed elsewhere on the forum, but I could not find anything relevant when I did a search.

My 2007 3.0D-4D Hilux came out with 15" rims. I got rid of the factory fitted tyres and fitted 31" x 10.5" x 15" (265 x 75 x 15) BFG All Terrain tyres as well as a full OME suspension upgrade.

I have done 102 000 troublefree km's on this set of tyres and need to replace them soon.

The 31"tyres look a bit lost inside the large wheel arches and I want to replace them with 32" tyres. I have been advised not to do so as, I have been told, that the loss of power due to the larger tyre diameter will be noticeable.

I note that many of the forum members run on 265 x 75 x 16 tyres (essentially 32" x 10.5" x 16"). What is your experience with these tyre sizes? And is the power loss and extra fuel consumption and extra strain on the drivetrain that noticeable?

And would it be possible to get a 32" tyre to fit on the standard 15" rims? Or should I rather go for 16" rims?

Your advise and experience willl be much appreciated.

Edward

Going past 31" on a 15" rim is very limiting as there are few choices. The 265/75 R16's on a 7" +20 offset is what most 32's are. It has worked well for me but yes our fuel economy does take a hit particularly round town. I've since regeared my diffs and it is back to factory. and fuel consumption came down about 3-4 litres per 100 km. Sounds like you have done very well out of your last set.

You could run 2 sets and drive offroad on a 34x10.5" Swamper but it won't do your ride much good

Mate you can get a 32/11.5x15 tyre but this is ilegal to fit to a 7" rim here in Australia, I don't know about SA. Check out Troy's (KTM's) build he runs this tyre

You could even go for a 33/10.5x15 on the 7" rim with a 2 inch lift and shock packers, Check out Noidea build thread he has done this.

Hope this helps.

I'm running 32" tyres, and yes, I lost a bit of power in my Diesel. will definately be looking at changing diff gears down the track.

i have noticed the loss of power but to me it doesnt really matter. a diesel chip or 3" exhaust would fix the problem but if i wanted performance then i would have bought a sports car. as for fuel, i went from 9.5l/100kms in a 29" tyre to 10.5l/100kms in a 32" tyre.

So would the 32's run ok with a 2" lift? Looking at running the fuel 17 -13 offset wheels also.
Cheers.

I have 32" mtz on 16x8 alloys -12 offset. Fits nice. Rubs on mud flap when turning hard up Gutters.

Thing to remember when going up tyre diameters is not only will it make your vehicle slower round town in 4x2, and use a little more fuel by putting the engine a little out of its ultimate rpm range, but offroad in low range you will loose more engine breaking....this will be more significant in auto hilux's since the first gear ratio is twice as tall as first gear in manuals.....

if your going to offroad, always keep this in mind so you dont get yourself unstuck on a steep hill going down too quickly.

I've got 32x11.5's on the alloy Sr5 wheel's and i didn't really notice the loss of power. They fill the guard's pretty well too although mine are being put on -13 offset sunny's tomorrow

Guys, thanks a lot for the feedback thus far.

Is it an expensive excercise to regear your diffs? And what exactly does it entail?

would anyone know if 40mm lift on the front will allow 32" tyres?

I got 32x11.5 on mine and compared to the 31's on my old lux the new one is far far more capable offroad.
Yeh the gearing isn't perfect and I lost a little power but it was well worth it in my opinion. The 32's are on 8 inch wide 0 offset sunrasia style steel rims from monster rides for $95 a pop. I think there infinity coyote's.

305 might be a bit big for such a positive offset

+18 with a 305 will hit the uca and rub HARD on the sway bar. +10 minimum with no sway bars perfect.

Hey guys.

I'm looking at fitting 32"s, but have heard that to keep it legal I need an engineers certificate as the wheel diameter is in excess of a 50mm gain...is this true and how much are these engineers certificates???

Thanks

Correct, you would need to contact an engineer and discuss the mods you want to do to your rig first.

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this question but after searching I couldn't find any others that suited better.

I have a 2013 SR5 with the stock 265/65R17 tyres fitted. As most people would know, a lot of tyre brands don't offer this size in their more aggressive treads, with 265/70R17 often being the smallest size.

My question is regarding the gearing - how much performance loss would you notice by moving from 31" to 32" tyres leaving all else equal (eg diff ratios etc)? I do a heap of driving on the open road and love the way my truck pulls like a train up hills etc, and I don't want to lose that if I fit bigger tyres.

Its only a 3% change in diameter so you'd think the change would be pretty minor, but just after some first hand opinions from some people here...

Thanks fellas!

Hi Timbo. Mate I put a set of KM2's on in the 265/70 17 size on my 13' SR5 and reckon there is a very small amount of power loss. Bit hard to tell if it's the tyre size or just being new and still tight after coming from a 4 year old Hilux. I upgraded the exhaust to a full 3inch Redback system and reckon that has helped a bit.
