now that I'm back to empty (heavy duty alloy tay + canopy), its 38 across the board. if i was to ever take the canopy off I would prob drop to at least 35 in the rear

note, I tested the loaded pressures using the "4psi rule", but havent done so with unloaded pressures

I think it's 6psi for LT tyres. I am trying to find the sweet spot at the moment as I am sick of the harsh ride at 42 front 38 rear (bar, winch but nothing in tub). Tried 40 front and 36 rear. After 40min fronts went to 43 rears to 38. Will try dropping them some more over the next few days.

As for S/T Maxx and scrubbing, from memory there 265/70R17s not 65 and they scrape on an SR5 without lift. Rears ok but front grabs the bar and mudflaps of half turn. 2inch lift and no issues.

I haven't checked the pressures of mine recently as I've only been driving around town.

but last time I pumped up, it was using my compressor and pencil gauge. I pumped until the pencil gauge said 45. I believe this gives me about 42-43 (measured by the servo digital gauge)

the ride seems ok, even when empty, tho I do have a soft flexy suspension setup atm

I have been using the Copper S/T maxx 265/70/17 tyres on my Hilux for 40,000 kms now. I guess I am on track to get around 65,000 - 70,000 kms out of them. I rotate them every 10,000 kms. Very quiet tyres considering the more aggressive pattern. No problem with noise at all. No complaints about the grip on or off road. I just received a written quotation for them at $335 each, fitted and balanced in Sydney. I'm going to buy another set and throw the existing tyres onto the camper trailer and spare wheels.

That's a great price Kev. I paid 420ish each for mine back in late 2011.

What PSI are you running front and rear?

How do you find them in the wet?

I avoid driving my truck in the wet if I can as the back end just can't get a grip when accelerating from a dead stop. If I am going straight I flick the rear locker on and have no issue but when turning I have to be sure to leave myself plenty of time from on coming traffic. I am hoping the addition of a canopy, draws and loading them up will assist.

I've been happy with the ST Maxxes in the wet. although, now that they're worn, it's a lot easier to get them to spin. a bit of weight in the back and slightly lower psi eliminates that

Mine went on in 2011 and are still going strong. I've got a nail in one for a few months but have not been game to pull it out! Might not have gone right through.

I'd be inclined to pull it out and plug if necessary. Last thing you want is for it to go in further / do more dmaage

Regarding your questions - "Aquaholic", I run rather high pressures normally, as I am mostly working with heavy loads and traveling on the black stuff. So I am up around 40 PSI rear and 38 PSI front. It works fine for me and I don't have any problems. I don't push the boundaries and drive to preserve the vehicle. Hence I can never recall loosing traction on any occasion with the Coopers, in the dry or the wet. Off road I lower them accordingly as many 4WDers would do. Down to around 16 PSI depending on the task. I guess it all depends on the load, experience and a few shovel loads of common sense. Very happy with the S/T Maxx Coopers and they are so very quiet, considering the more rugged tread pattern. Great tyre technology.

Cooper Discover STT Mud Terrain
and just a nice black wheel.

eventually I want to upgrade the suspension I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what size tyres will work on my ute. also don't know much about offset so some info on that would be helpful.

welcome to the site Mick, there is a bucket load of info here.

use the search (needs to be more than 3 letters) and you will find lots of info

as for what works, it really depends what mods you've made. 2" lift and 265/70/17 is common

I email Coopers and they are happy for me to drop my pressures until I get a 4psi variance from cold to hot after a minimum of 40min driving on the black stuff only.
Currently I am running 34 in the rear and 38 in the front of my rig. I have driven an hour or so (30min at 110) and then checked pressures again and the variance from cold to hot is still less than 4psi (2psi rear and 3psi front). The reduction from 38 rear and 42 front has improved the grip in the wet and the ride comfort. I'm much happier with them now.

Aquaholics - 38 in an empty tub is way more than you need.

You could come down even more to 30 or 32. Just need to put a little extra in when you put in a good load.

Thanks nicebike, I have been working that out over the last few weeks, I wasn't game to run anything less than recommended by coopers when they were new but now I am over the rough ride and starting to go for comfort. I am about to install a canopy and draws so have held of doing any more experimenting until I work out my new load. Currently 34 cold and 36 hot int he rears so I'm thinking 30psi would be the go for an empty tub.

Coopers told me they have some of their work utes on 28psi and still getting good service life out of the ST Maxx. They mentioned due to the design of the tyre they do not need to be ran at 40+psi.

I just replaced my Hankook 10 ply tires with Cooper St Maxx on my 2009 Hilux. I don't have but a couple hundred KM on them yet so can really comment too much. The Hankooks wore out in less than 50KM on my gravel roads. I am hoping to get better wear on the Coopers. I am running them at 40PSI so they are a bit stiffer. The first few miles on them were eery as the release lubricant they use when molding the tires felt like I was traveling on ball bearings and could slide off the road at any minute. This went away after a few KM.s. They still feel a little weird while cornering but the grip on both pavement and dirt seem really good. Time will tell if this was a good choice for me or not.

I went straight from the factory tires to the matching Cooper ST-MAXX's (265/65 r17), I've found them to be brilliant (About 7k km's so far). They are definitely a 50/50 tire though; I wouldn't be buying them if you didn't regularly go off the black top. I've kept my original factory ones to put back on if I am not going to be regularly going off road in the future. I run them at about 38psi on the black top, and down to 28-30psi on corrugations; definitely great tires off road.

Hey all - looking at a set of these on my yet to be delivered 2015 SR5. It's going to have a 2 inch lift so im going with the 265/70/R17. Im coming from Mickey T STZ so (correct me if im wrong) the Coopers might have a slightly more off-road lean to them. I carry a fair bit of weight most of the time (tool boxes etc).
Is anyone getting any rub with this size tire with a 2 inch lift? Im just fitting them to the standard rims.

Cheers
